A Placement Policy improving Retrieval Efficiency of video streams in Clustered VOD Servers (클러스터드 주문형 비디오 서버에서 비디오 스트림의 검색효율을 높이는 배치정책)

  • One of the most important goals in VOD servers is to provide services to more clients with services which clients request. In order to provide service efficiently and rapidly, though considering a few of policies, efficient placement of data when they are stored is direct cause to improve efficiency of retrievals. In this paper, we propose a efficient placement policy, encoded video data being stored in clustered VOD servers. In the proposed placement policy, partitioning a large disk array into smaller disk groups which consists of a few of disks with similar performances, specially disk I/O bandwidth. In last chapter, we compare proposed placement policy with conventional policies, and show the results of improved performances with proposed policy.

A new 4-way search window for improve memory bandwidth by 2-D data reuse for ME in H.264 (H.264의 움직임추정에서 2차원 데이터재사용으로 메모리대역폭을 개선하기 위한 4방향 검색윈도우)

  • In this paper, a new 4-way search window is developed for H.264 Motion Estimation(ME) to improve the memory bandwidth. The proposed 4-way(up, down, left, right) search window could improve the reuse of overlapped window data to reduce the redundancy access factor by 1.4, though the 1/3-way search window requires $7.7{\sim}11$ times of data retrieval redundantly. In experiments, the new implementation of 4-way search window on Altera Stratix-III could deal with CIF ($352{\times}288$) video of 3 reference frame, $48{\times}48$ search area and $16{\times}16$ macroblock by 30fps real time at 55.2MHz.

  • Due to development of internet network environments and data compression techniques, the size and amount of multimedia data has greatly increased. They are compressed before transmission or storage. Dealing with these compressed data such as video retrieval or indexing requires decompression procedure in most cases. This causes additional computations and increases the processing time. In various applications a histogram is one of the most frequently used tools. Efficiency of extracting such histograms will drop down if decompression is involved. We propose a novel scheme for extracting histograms from images that are transformed into the compressed domain by 8x8 DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform). In this scheme an averaged version of original image is obtained by a simple linear combination of DCT coefficients with the sets of coefficients we designed.

Methods for Video Caption Extraction and Extracted Caption Image Enhancement (영화 비디오 자막 추출 및 추출된 자막 이미지 향상 방법)

  • For an efficient indexing and retrieval of digital video data, research on video caption extraction and recognition is required. This paper proposes methods for extracting artificial captions from video data and enhancing their image quality for an accurate Hangul and English character recognition. In the proposed methods, we first find locations of beginning and ending frames of the same caption contents and combine those multiple frames in each group by logical operation to remove background noises. During this process an evaluation is performed for detecting the integrated results with different caption images. After the multiple video frames are integrated, four different image enhancement techniques are applied to the image: resolution enhancement, contrast enhancement, stroke-based binarization, and morphological smoothing operations. By applying these operations to the video frames we can even improve the image quality of phonemes with complex strokes. Finding the beginning and ending locations of the frames with the same caption contents can be effectively used for the digital video indexing and browsing. We have tested the proposed methods with the video caption images containing both Hangul and English characters from cinema, and obtained the improved results of the character recognition.

  • Recently, as the increase in interaction between the person and the person, the people plentifully use the business card to exchange personal information. So, the people have many business cards. Thus, the people are liable to lose the business cards and finding a wanted business card is very difficult in the huge business cards in offline. And, the people think the business card is a way, which can express individuality. So, the people want to have the business card, which has individuality. Thus, this paper proposes the card system, which is satisfied to solve many problems of the card system in offline and express individuality. The proposed business card system can produce various business cards and puts contents such as video, photo, voice into business cards via mobile devices in anywhere, anytime. Also, this business card system follows the vCard format, which is a file format standard for personal data interchange. Finally, we provide with content-based business card retrieval using video and photo inserted into business cards. Thus, this paper proposes the hybrid business card system, which is satisfied to produce business cards expressed individuality and follows the vCard format.

Uses and Gratifications of User-Created Contents: Expressing Self with Self-Produced Video Clips (동영상 UCC의 이용 동기와 만족에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • This study explored three questions: (1) what are the motives of producing and using user-created contents (UCC, video clips which are produced and uploaded at various web sites by individuals), (2) what are the gratifications that users obtain from UCC, and (3) what are the differences of gratifications according to individual uses of UCC. A survey was conducted to 258 UCC users and data were factor-analyzed to find the dimensions of motives and gratifications. As for the motives of UCC uses, six factors were constructed: self-expression, private life, participation, information retrieval, rest, and entertainment, among which self-expression showed the largest variation. As for the gratifications, five factors were constructed: self-expression, rest, information retrieval, socializing, and entertainment.

  • With recent progress of related multimedia computing technologies, it is necessay to retrieve diverse types of multimedia data based on multi-media content and their relationships. However, different from alphanumeric data, it is difficult to provide relevant multimedia information, be-cause multimedia contents and their relationships are implied in multimedia data. Therefore, in case of a multimedia news service system that is a representative multimedia application, most of new services provide relevant news about text articles and retrieval of multimedia news such as video news or image news are provided independently. In this paper, we present an XML-based multimedia news management system, which provides integrating, retrieval, and delivery of relevant multimedia news. Our data model composed of media object, relationship object, and view object represents diverse types of multimedia news content and semantically related multimedia news. In addition, a proposed view mechanism makes it possible to customize multimedia news, and therefore provides multimedia news efficiently.

  • According to the increase of audio and video data utilization, the presentation of multimedia data contents and the work of retrieving, storing and manipulating a multimedia data have been the focus of recent work. The display for multimedia data should retrieve and access the contents easily that users want to present. This study is about the design and implementation of a system to retrieve multimedia data based on the contents of documentation or the caption information of a multimedia data for retrieving documentation including multimedia data. It intends to develop an filtering step to retrieve all of keyword within the caption information of multimedia data and text of a documentation. Also, the system is designed to retrieve a large amount of data quickly using an inverted file structure available for B+ tree.

  • The proliferation of the web and digital photography has drastically increased multimedia data and has resulted in the need of the high quality internet service based on the moving picture like user generated contents(UGC). The keyword-based search on large scale images and video collections is too expensive and requires much manual intervention. Therefore the web search engine may provide the content-based retrieval on the multimedia data for search accuracy and customer satisfaction. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed index structure based on multiple length signature files according to data distribution. In addition, we describe how our scalable index technique can be used to find the nearest neighbors in the cluster environments.

An Agroclimatic Data Retrieval and Analysis System for Microcomputer Users(CLIDAS) (퍼스컴을 이용한 농업기후자료 검색 및 분석시스템)

  • Climatological informations have not been fully utilized by agricultural research and extension workers in Korea due mainly to inaccessbilty to the archived climate data. This study was initiated to improve access to historical climate data gathered from 72 weather stations of Korea Meteorological Administration for agricultural applications by using a microcomputer-based methodology. The climatological elements include daily values of average, maximum and minimum temperature, relative humidity, average and maximum wind speed, wind direction, evaporation, precipitation, sunshine duration and cloud amount. The menu-driven, user-friendly data retrieval system(CLIDAS) provides quick summaries of the data values on a daily, weekly and monthly basis and selective retrieval of weather records meeting certain user specified critical conditions. Growing degree days and potential evapotranspiration data are derived from the daily climatic data, too. Data reports can be output to the computer screen, a printer or ASCII data files. CLIDAS can be run on any IBM compatible machines with Video Graphics Array card. To run the system with the whole database, more than 50 Mb hard disk space should be available. The system can be easily upgraded for further expansion of functions due to the module-structured design.
