This paper evaluated the safety and serviceability of a building structure considering the multi-hazard and proposed TMD-based adaptive smart control system to improve the structural performance. To make multi-hazard loads, an artificial earthquake and artificial wind loads were generated based on representative regions of strong seismicity and strong wind in U.S.A. The safety and serviceability of a 20-story example building structure were investigated using the generated artificial loads. A smart TMD was employed to improve the safety and serviceability of the example structure and its capacity of structural performance improvement was evaluated. The smart TMD was comprised of a MR (magnetorheological) damper. Numerical analysis showed that the example building structure could not satisfy the design limit of safety and serviceability with respect to multi-hazard. The smart TMD effectively reduced the seismic responses associated with the safety and wind-induce responses associated with serviceability.
An accurate identification of the aerodynamic characteristics of vehicles and the bridge is the premise for the coupled vibration analysis of a wind-vehicle-bridge system. At present, the interaction of aerodynamic forces between the road vehicles and bridge is ignored in most previous studies. In the present study, an experimental setup was developed to measure the aerodynamic characteristics of vehicles and the bridge for different cases in a wind tunnel considering the aerodynamic interference. The influence of the wind turbulence, the wind speed, the vehicle interference, and the vehicle position on the aerodynamic coefficients of vehicles, and the influence of vehicles on the static coefficients of the bridge were investigated, based on the experimental results. The variations in the aerodynamic characteristics of vehicles and the bridge were studied and the measured results were validated according to the results of surface pressure measurements on the vehicle and the bridge. The measured results were further validated by comparing the measured results with values derived numerically. The measured results showed that the wind turbulence, the vehicle interference, and the vehicle position significantly affected the aerodynamic coefficients of vehicles. However, the influence of the wind speed on the aerodynamic coefficients of the studied vehicle is small. The static coefficients of the bridge were also significantly influenced by the presence of vehicles.

In this paper, we introduce a new framework for running the finite element (FE) packages inside an online Loop together with MATLAB. Contrary to the Hardware-in-the-Loop techniques (HiL), in the proposed Software-in-the-Loop framework (SiL), the FE package represents a simulation platform replicating the real system which can be out of access due to several strategic reasons, e.g., costs and accessibility. Practically, SiL for sophisticated structural design and multi-physical simulations provides a platform for preliminary tests before prototyping and mass production. This feature may reduce the new product's costs significantly and may add several flexibilities in implementing different instruments with the goal of shortlisting the most cost-effective ones before moving to real-time experiments for the civil and mechanical systems. The proposed SiL interconnection is not limited to ABAQUS as long as the host FE package is capable of executing user-defined commands in FORTRAN language. The focal point of this research is on using the compiled FORTRAN subroutine as a messenger between ABAQUS/CAE kernel and MATLAB Engine. In order to show the generality of the proposed scheme, the limitations of the available SiL schemes in the literature are addressed in this paper. Additionally, all technical details for establishing the connection between FEM and MATLAB are provided for the interested reader. Finally, two numerical sub-problems are defined for offline and online post-processing, i.e., offline optimization and closed-loop system performance analysis in control theory.

Bellows are mechanical components which prevent the damage of system by absorption of the vibration and the displacement of axle and radial direction. Thermal piping system is expanded by the fluid of the high temperature from the heat engine inside. At this time, bellows prevent the damage of the piping due to the thermal expansion. Recently, design of bellows is required to fit some other operational environments which are not suggested in the E.J.M.A code book. And it is difficult to produce and to maintain bellows of high temperature and high pressure bemuse of its complicated shape and this causes the manufacturing cost to rise. The objective of this study is to determine optimum shape of bellows which can endure in the high temperature and high pressure. The maximum stress has an effect on the fatigue life of bellows, therefore it needs to be minimized. This study attempts to find a shape which minimizes the stress occurring in the bellows by the design of experiment. The model used in this study is not presented in the E.J.M.A code book, therefore, from the result of design of experiment we find the factors which give effects on the characteristic value and we presents the recession model using the RSM, which can predict the characteristic values depending on the change of factor values.
The evaluation of the loss-of-support conditions of frictional beam-to-column connections using simplified numerical models describing the transverse response of a portal-like structure is presented in this paper considering the effects of the seismic-hazard disaggregation. Real earthquake time histories selected from European Strong-motion Database (ESD) are used to show the effects of the seismic-hazard disaggregation on the beam loss-of-support conditions. Seismic events are classified according to different values of magnitudes, epicentral distances and soil conditions (stiff or soft soil) highlighting the importance of considering the characteristics of the seismic input in the assessment of the loss-of-support conditions of frictional beam-to-column connections. A rigid and an elastic model of a frame of a precast industrial building (2-DoF portal-like model) are presented and adopted to find the minimum required friction coefficient to avoid sliding. Then, the mean value of the minimum required friction coefficient with an epicentral distance bin of 10 km is calculated and fitted with a linear function depending on the logarithm of the epicentral distance. A complete parametric analysis varying the horizontal and vertical period of vibration of the structure is performed. Results show that the loss-of-support condition is strongly influenced by magnitude, epicentral distance and soil conditions determining the frequency content of the earthquake time histories and the correlation between the maxima of the horizontal and vertical components. Moreover, as expected, dynamic characteristics of the structure have also a strong influence. Finally, the effect of the column nonlinear behavior (i.e. formation of plastic hinges at the base) is analyzed showing that the connection and the column are a series system where the maximum force is limited by the element having the minimum strength. Two different longitudinal reinforcement ratios are analyzed demonstrating that the column strength variation changes the system response.
When the crossing frequency of a train meets the natural frequency of a railway bridge, the bridge is bound to become resonant. There are few available time response samples involving a train that passes a bridge at high speed. Very effective modal-parameter extraction techniques for such special high-speed railway bridge conditions are introduced in this paper. Utilizing the cross-correlations of the free-vibration responses after the train passes, mode shapes and the temporal modal parameters (e.g., natural frequency and damping ratio) are extracted using the TDD and SI techniques, respectively. This approach has been applied to a two-span steel composite bridge in the Kyung-Bu high-speed railway system. The estimation results were compared with those obtained using the existing methods. The results fully coincide with those that were extracted using the existing aforementioned technique.
For evaluation of durability of low vacuum pumps, it is required to examine the performance and degradation of low vacuum pumps. Pump degradation may result from abnormalities associated with the performance in many areas of pump operation. The diagnostics method can be used to monitor the pump performance in the semi-conductor process line. Based on the mechanical defect of the pump, the dynamic response and reliability of the system for performance test, and the dynamic characteristics of the pump were experimentally assessed. The theoretical work rate for the compression process in the pump was calculated, and then the efficiency of the pump associated with the power consumption was evaluated. This analysis will be useful in detecting pump degradation with increasing the power consumption. To determine the predominant factors of pump degradation, it is important to evaluate the entire pumping system. We studied vibration, dynamic pressure, pumping speed, and power consumption of low vacuum pumps. Our results can be utilized for the future research on the evaluating technology of durability of low vacuum pumps.

The purpose of the present study is to compare the reduction rate of natural frequency and the increase rate of damping parameter with structural damage in system. For this purpose, experiment and numerical simulation analysis are performed for the 2-span H-Beam with lower natural frequency and higher damping parameter from free vibration in structure. The response signal by impact load before and after damage is analyzed at 14 locations. The response signals for all locations are performed fast fourier transform to estimate the natural frequency reduction rate and wavelet transform to estimate the damping parameter increase rate. The time domain function corresponding to each scale(frequency) is separated from the response signal by wavelet parameter. The estimation of damping parameter increase rate using wavelet transform is more sensitive than the estimation of natural frequency reduction rate in structure.
The joint distribution of wind speed and wind direction at a bridge site is vital to the estimation of the basic wind speed, and hence to the wind-induced vibration analysis of long-span bridges. Instead of the conventional way relying on the weather stations, this study proposed an alternate approach to obtain the original records of wind speed and the corresponding directions based on field measurement supported by the Structural Health Monitoring System (SHMS). Specifically, SHMS of Sutong Cable-stayed Bridge (SCB) is utilized to study the basic wind speed with directional information. Four anemometers are installed in the SHMS of SCB: upstream and downstream of the main deck center, top of the north and south tower respectively. Using the recorded wind data from SHMS, the joint distribution of wind speed and direction is investigated based on statistical methods, and then the basic wind speeds in 10-year and 100-year recurrence intervals at these four key positions are calculated. Analytical results verify the reliability of the recorded wind data from SHMS, and indicate that the joint probability model for the extreme wind speed at SCB site fits well with the Weibull model. It is shown that the calculated basic wind speed is reduced by considering the influence of wind direction. Compared to the design basic wind speed in the Specification of China, basic wind speed considering the influence of direction or not is much smaller, indicating a high safety coefficient in the design of SCB. The results obtained in this study can provide not only references for further wind-resistance research of SCB, but also improve the understanding of the safety coefficient for wind-resistance design of other engineering structures in the similar area.

In this study, characteristics of seismic behaviors of offshore wind turbine systems using concrete-suction-type supporting structures are investigated. Applying hydrodynamic pressure from the surrounding sea water and interaction forces from the underlying soil to the structural system which is composed of RNA, the tower, and the supporting structure, a governing equation of the system is derived and its earthquake responses are obtained. It can be observed from the analysis results that the responses are significantly influenced by soil-structure interaction because dynamic responses for higher natural vibration modes are increased due to the flexibility of soil. Therefore, the soil-structure interaction must be taken into consideration for accurate assessment of dynamic behaviors of offshore wind turbine systems using concrete-suction-type supporting structures.
