DPCap analysis can assist in determining the maximum environmental forces the DP system can counteract for a given heading. DPCap analysis results are highly affected by the thrust forces provided by the thrust system which consists of several kinds of thrusters. The thrust forces and moment are determined by the maximum thrust of the thrusters as well as the thruster configuration. In this paper, a novel local optimization of thruster configuration based on a synthesized positioning capability criterion is proposed. The combination of the discrete locations of the thrusters forms the thruster configuration and is the input, and the synthesized positioning capability is the output. The quantified synthesized positioning capability of the corresponding thruster configuration can be generated as the output. The optimal thruster configuration is the one which makes the vessel has the best positioning capability. A software program was developed based on the present study. A local optimization of thruster configuration for a supply vessel was performed to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the program. Even though the program cannot find the global optimal thruster configuration, its high efficiency makes it essentially practical in an engineering point. It may be used as a marine research tool and give guidance to the designer of the thrust system.
In the salvage area, the location of the incident vessel and diver to rescue the victim are very important. But there are no ways but to rely on the GPS satellites to obtain the location in the salvage sites. Because the positioning using GPS satellites has a measurement error of up to 50 meters caused by the status of the atmosphere, a new positioning method with more accuracy should be devised. So if studies on measuring the position of the ships and divers accurately in the sea are performed, it will be helpful in the field of the salvage positioning. In this paper, a high precision positioning system in salvage using DGPS signal through mobile broadcasting is proposed with positioning error of up to 1 meter.
This study aims to investigate the crabbing motion of the research vessel "NARA" by full-scale maneuvering trials. The crabbing test method refers to ITTC recommended procedures and guidelines. In order to minimize the fluctuation of the heading angle due to the external force acting on the hull during the pure lateral motion, the tests are conducted using the dynamic positioning system applied to the ship. The test results are analyzed by applying a low-pass filter to remove the noise included in the measurement data. Three conditions are set to define the steady state of crabbing motion. The index to be derived from the crabbing test is quantitatively presented. The ship is confirmed to be capable of the lateral motion of up to 0.844m/s in Beaufort 3.
The nonlinear time-domain analysis method was implemented to carry out a series of integrated simulations for a deep-water crane vessel system composed of four sub components, including a floating vessel, lifted equipment, hoisting cable and dynamic positioning (hereinafter DP) system. The analysis of the coupled dynamics consists of the crane vessel and equipment connected using the crane wire, and the DP is modeled according to the wind, wave and current conditions. The DP systems were numerically implemented using a classical PD feedback controller, and various simulations of the deepwater installation were conducted using different conditions in order to evaluate the global performance of the floating crane vessel combined with the DP system.
In order to minimize casualties from marine vessel accidents that occur frequently at home and abroad, it is important to ensure the safety of the passengers aboard the vessel in the event of an accident. There is an EPIRB system as a system for disaster preparedness in the marine situation currently on the market, but there is a problem that the price is very expensive. In order to overcome the cost problem, which is a disadvantage of previous system, LoRaWAN-based communication is used. LoRaWAN communication-based vessel positioning and risk detection system based on LoRaWAN communication transmits measurement data of each module using two Beacon and GPS modules to stably perform position measurement for both indoor and outdoor situations. The rider danger situation detection system can detect the safety status of the rider using the 3-axis acceleration sensor, collect data from the rider positioning system and the rider safety status detection system, and send to server using LoRa communication. When conducting communication experiments in the long-distance maritime situation and actual communication experiments using the implemented system, it was found that the two experiments showed over 90% communication success rate on average.
The Formal Safety Assessment (FSA) is a structured and systematic methodology developed by the IMO, aimed at assessing the risk of vessels and recommending the method to control intolerable risks, thereby enhancing maritime safety, including protection of life, health, the marine environment and property, by using risk analysis and cost-benefit assessment. While the FSA has mostly been applied to merchant vessels, it has rarely been applied to a DP vessel, which is one of the special purpose vessels in the offshore industry. Furthermore, most of the FSA has been conducted so far by using the Fault Tree Analysis tool, even though there are many other risk analysis tools. This study carried out the FSA for safe operation of DP vessels by using the Bayesian network, under which conditional probability was examined. This study determined the frequency and severity of DP LOP incidents reported to the IMCA from 2001 to 2010, and obtained the Risk Index by applying the Bayesian network. Then, the Risk Control Options (RCOs) were identified through an expert brainstorming and DP vessel simulations. This study recommends duplication of PRS, regardless of the DP class and PRS type and DP system specific training. Finally, this study verified that the Bayesian network and DP simulator can also serve as an effective tool for FSA implementation.
The main purpose of procuring the oceanographic research vessel with state-of-the-art technology is to provide a floating laboratory to conduct field work on the global oceans. The vessel should be properly utilized to locate and evaluate unexplored natural resources as well as to contribute international efforts to better understand and manage global environmental issues. Top priorities in the vessel design are high safety standards, noise and vibration control efficiency, and effective application of research equipment. For the accomplishment of all activities, the vessel length over all should be extended ~100 m with a gross tonnage of ~5,900 ton. In particular, the dynamic positioning system II will essentially operate at sea state 6. The high efficiency emissions reduction system will also be adopted in preparation for entry into force of 3rd exhaust emission control (Tier III). About 130 navigational and scientific instruments will be installed. The final design and model test of the new research vessel were reviewed and completed, respectively, in 2014. Currently, the ship is being built on schedule and expected to be delivered in December 2015. Within the near future, the new vessel will assume the role of carrying out multidisciplinary oceanographic researches of the highest standards in a technologically advanced and environment friendly manner.
This paper deals with performance assessment of the kinematic network-based GPS positioning technique with a view to using it for ellipsoidally referenced bathymetric surveys. To this end, two field trials were carried out on a land vehicle and a surveying vessel. Single-frequency GPS data acquired from these tests were processed by an in-house software which equips the network modeling algorithm with instantaneous ambiguity resolution procedure. The results reveals that ambiguity success rate based on the network model is mostly higher than 99.0%, which is superior to that of the single-baseline model. In addition, achievable accuracy of the technique was accessed at ${\pm}1.6cm$ and 2.7 cm with 95% confidence level in horizontal and vertical component respectively. From bathymetric survey at the West Nakdong River in Busan, Korea, 3-D coordinates of 2,011 points on its bed were computed by using GPS-derived coordinates, attitude, measured depth and geoid undulation. Note that their vertical coordinates are aligned to the geoid, the so-called orthometric height which is widely adopted in river engineering. Bathymetry was constructed by interpolating the coordinate set, and some discussion on its benefit was given at the end.
The underwater positioning system is important in interpreting data that are acquired from towing vehicles such as the deep-sea camera (DSC) system. Currently, several acoustic positioning systems such as long baseline (LBL), short baseline (SBL), and ultra short baseline (USBL), are used for underwater positioning. The accurate position of DSC, however, could not be determined in a R/V Onnuri unequipped with any of these underwater positioning systems. As an alternative, the DSC position was estimated based on the topography of towing track and cable length in the cruises before 1999. The great uncertainties, however, were found in the areas of flat bottom topography. In the 2003 and 2004 cruises these uncertainties were reduced by calculating the position of DSC with the cable length and seafloor depth below the vessel. The Japanese cruises for Mn-nodule used a similar estimation method for the DSC positioning system with a CTD sensor. Although the latter can provide better information for the position of DSC, the USBL underwater positioning system is strongly recommended for establishing better positioning of DSC and other towing devices.
