The paper presents an overview of the present state of study on the fatigue behaviors at very high number of cycles ($N_f$ > $10^7$). A classification of materials with typical S-N curves and influencing factors such as notches, residual stresses, temperatures, corrosion environments and stress ratios are given. The microstructural inhomogeneities of materials and micro-cracks played an important roles in very high cycle fatigue behaviors. The failure mechanisms for the fatigue design of materials and components are mentioned.
Low cycle fatigue characteristics are very important in the development of automobile suspension parts. Fatigue properties using the strain life approach are usually obtained from low cycle fatigue tests. However, low cycle fatigue testing requires a lot of time and cost. In the current study, an attempt to estimate low cycle fatigue properties of high strength steel sheet from tensile test and tensile simulations is performed. In addition, low cycle fatigue testing was conducted to compare the fatigue properties obtained from tensile testing and simulations. In conclusion, the results effectively predict the low cycle fatigue properties. However, some deviations still exist.
SCMH2 steel is widely used in the industrial members of car and tractor. This study focused on material properties and evaluation technology of the SCMH2 steel regarding the surface treatment followed by carburizing and nitriding, by means of impact test, hardness test. and fatigue test including HCF (high cycle fatigue) and VHCF (very high cycle fatigue). Drop weight impact tester (Instron, 9250 Hv) and Cantilever type rotating-bending fatigue tester (YRB200, 3150 rpm) were used to characterize the SCMH2 standard specimen before and after carburizing/nitriding. In order to understand those effects on fatigue characteristics and material properties, the fractured surfaces were carefully observed and analyzed by SEM (scanning electron microscope) and EDS (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy).

CrMo alloy steel was nitrided using two types of processing methods, ion-nitriding processing and nitrocarburizing. Both processes were conducted for a duration of 30 min. To compare the surface hardness of the alloys created by the different processes, microhardness tests were conducted, and fatigue tests of each material were performed by a cantilever rotary bending fatigue test machine (Yamamoto, YRB 200) in the very high cycle regime ($N>10^7cycle$). Fractography of the fractured surfaces was conducted by scanning electron microscopy - to observe the fracture mechanisms of very high cycle fatigue and the effect of the nitriding process on the fatigue characteristics.

Turbulent mixing of hot and cold coolants is one of the possible causes of high cycle thermal fatigue in piping systems of nuclear power plants. A typical situation for such mixing appears in turbulent flow through a T-junction. Since the high cycle thermal fatigue caused by thermal striping was not considered in the piping fatigue design in several nuclear power plants, it is very important to evaluate the effect of thermal striping on the integrity of mixing tees. In the present work, before conducting detailed evaluation, three thermal striping evaluation methodology suggested by EPRI, JSME and NESC are analyzed. Then, a by-pass pipe connected to the shutdown cooling system heat exchanger is investigated by using these evaluation methodology. Consequently, the resulting thermal stresses and the fatigue life of the mixing tee are reviewed and compared to each other. Futhermore, the limitation of each methodology are also presented in this paper.

The low-cycle fatigue behaviour of a SiC-particulate-reinforced Al-Si cast alloy with two different volume fractions has been investigated from a series of strain-control led fatigue tests with zero and nonzero tensile mean strains. The composites including the unreinforced matrix alloy, exhibited cyclic hardening behaviour, with more pronounced strain-hardening for the composites with a higher volume fraction of the SiC particles. For the tensile mean strain tests, the initial high tensile mean stress relaxed to zero for the ductile Al-Si alloy, resulting in no influence of the tensile mean strain on the fatigue life of the matrix alloy. However, tensile mean strain for the composite caused tensile mean stresses and reduced fatigue life. The pronounced effects of mean strain on the low-cycle fatigue life of the composite compared to the unreinforced matrix alloy were attributed to the initial large prestrain and non-relaxing high tensile mean stress in the composite with very limited ductility and Cyclic plasticity. Fatigue damage parameter using strain energy, density efficiently accounted for the mean stress effects. Predicted fatigue life using the damage parameter correlated fairly well with the experimental life within a factor of 3. Also, the fatigue damage parameter indicated the inferior life in the low-cycle regime and superior life in the high-cycle regime for the composite, compared to the unreinforced matrix alloy.
In this paper, the fatigue characteristics of shot peened A7075-T651 alloy were compared with those of the specimens without the shot peening. The multi-spindle and single-spindle rotating bending fatigue testing machines were employed for the evaluation. Shot peening (SP) with various pressure (5 psi, 10 psi, 15 psi, 25 psi and 35 psi) were used in this test. In order to investigate the effect of the applied pressure during the SP, we carried out the surface roughness test, compressive residual stress test, hardness test, tensile test, VHCF (Very high cycle fatigue) test and SEM observation. SP induced the formation of remarkable compressive residual stress from the surface to certain depth of sample by means of the plastic deformation. The surface hardness and the fatigue characteristics of the specimens were also modified by the SP. According to the S-N curves, fatigue lives of shot peended sample with 25 psi measures 50 times higher than that of the untreated sample. The fatigue lives of shot peened sample with 15 psi and 35 psi measure approximately 10 times higher than that of the untreated ones.

The demand of high cycle fatigue behavior on plate material is increasing because of its various applications. However, the high-cycle fatigue life data of the plate material is very rare compared to the rod material. Thus, in this study, a plate specimen is designed for the ultrasonic fatigue test because it is time efficient as compared to the conventional fatigue test. To apply the ultrasonic fatigue test, the specimen design is required to resonate at 20 kHz. Therefore, the dynamic elastic modulus was determined by measuring the resonance frequency with a piezoelectric element and laser doppler vibrometer (LDV). As a result, the plate specimen is designed and demonstrated using the ultrasonic fatigue testing machine. The ultrasonic fatigue test results were compared with the hydraulic fatigue test results.
The cold forging process induces material deformation in an enclosed space, generating a very high forging load. Therefore, it is mainly designed as a multi-stage process, and fatigue failure occurs in forging die due to cyclic load. Studies have been conducted previously to quantitatively predict the fatigue limit of cold forging dies, however, there was a limit to field application due to the large error range and the need for expert intervention. To solve this problem, we conducted a study on the introduction of a real-time forging load measurement technology and an automated system for quantitative prediction of die life cycle. As a result, it was possible to reduce the error range of the quantitative prediction of die life cycle to within ±7%, and it became possible to use the die life cycle calculation algorithm into an automated system.

Very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) behavior of aerospace components has emerged much attention due to their long service life. In this study, a piezoelectric ultrasonic fatigue testing (UFT) system has been developed by Mbrosiatec Co., Ltd. to study the high cycle fatigue (HCF) strength of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Hourglass-shaped specimens have been investigated in the range from $10^6$ to $10^9$ cycles at room temperature under completely reversed R = -1 loading conditions,. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that failures occurred in the entire range up to the gigacycle regime, and the fractures have beenfound to be initiated from the surface, unlike in steels. However, it was found from the SEM microgprahs that microcracks transformed into intergranular fractures. Thus, it can be concluded from according to the results that this test method can be applicable to commercialized automotive and railroad parts that require high cycle fatigue strength.
