  • The purpose of this study is to provide the technical information of the stability change and behaviour characteristics in case upward direction of soil nailing is installed. Generally, the soil nailing which installed in case of vertical excavation or for the purpose of the slope stability is installed between 5 to 15 degree of downward direction. The downward direction of the soil nailing method has lots of advantages such as the increase of the stability, the convenience of the grout compared to upward direction of soil nailing. Even though the upward direction of the soil nailing has the disadvantages in terms of the stability and the grout construction, horizontal displacement tends to be decreased.

  • P.C Bearing Plate method, corresponding to the existing steel plate build-up method, is developed by the very first in domestic and is applied to the foundation in the HYUNDAI building at Kang-Nam. P. C Bearing Plate produced in ourself P.C plant can stand against vertical load of 7,000ton obtaining allowable force of soil. It is possible to minmize cost expediting, do site assembling and omit unnecessary excavation work by plant prefabrication of foundation member. The purpose of this paper is to study the optimum mixing design of Ultra-high strength concrete ($\acute{f}_{C91}$= 950kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$), crack control through measuring the heat of hydration, mock up test for the optimum curing method. As mentioned above, developing the Ultra-high strength Precast Concrete Bearing Plate set up successfully in the site foundation work of the HYUNDAI Building at Kang-Nam.

  • In this paper, heaving phenomenon is analyzed by laboratory tests. A laboratory test is consist of building soft clay foundation in plane-strain soil tank, construction of retaining wall, and excavation work. And range of shear strain, and destruction shape about soft clay foundation is compared, and analyzed with results of proposal formula. Using this study, safety factor is suggested for heaving phenomenon in the construction of wall on the soft clay. Actual theory is suggested by this suggested safety factor. There are various proposal formula for heaving phenomenon. For example, Terzaghi & Peck, Tschebotarioff, Bjerrum & Eide(Experience formula) and so on. Terzaghi & Peck's proposal formula is chosen, compared with laboratory test's result and analyzed in this study. A soft clay used in study is assumed homogeneous. A Depth of foundation is enough to observe shear strain by heaving phenomenon. Retaining wall is enough hard not to have vertical displacement.

  • In general steel sheet piles are used in the containment system, which are vertical barrier systems for waste disposal and landfill purposes, and roads in excavation for temporary structure. This paper presents case study of the use of an interlocking sheet pile for water and containment. Cut-off Z-type sheet pile joints are investigated to determine their permeability from the field test. Four different joint sealing materials are used in field test. The results showed joint permeability is significant time-dependent and joint-dependent. These are explored and conclusions on permeability characteristics of different sealants are noted. A case study gives a design example as well as suggestion on permeability and water tightness can be implemented in using the sheet pile barrier in civil and environment works. From the test results, the effective sealing programs of sheet pile interlocks are suggested.

  • Quaternary fault movement of the Ulsan fault system was interpreted by aenal photograph, field survey and trench excavation. The geomorphological evidences associated with active fault are clearly shown at Cheonbuk-myeon area, northern part of Ulsan fault system. In the trench wall one reverse fault(N 50$^{\circ}$E, 70$^{\circ}$E) is identified between basement rock (Miocene mudstone) and gravel deposits Another thrust fault (NS) extends up to the red and light brown soil layers. Middle terrace surface shows cumulative vertical displacements of about 3 to 7 m. The horizontai displacement of the red soil by faulting event is about 1.8 to 2.4m. The age of the fault activity is younger than that of the soil layer, which is roughly estimated to be late Quaternary (about 100Ka)

  • The Grout-reinforcement technique which is widely used during the excavation of a shallow or an endangered tunnel can be classified into a couple of groups according to the properties and injection methods of the grout. The reinforcement design will, therefore, take a different approach based on the grouting method under consideration. However, the injection procedure is mainly performed by the experience of the foreman rather than engineering judgement , specifically the permeation grouting through the rock joints and its reinforcement effect Is not fully under-stood during the design stage, In this study, the anisotropic material properties of the grout-reinforced rock masses are derived from the concept of composite materials and the effect of intact rock, vertical grouting and permeation grouting is, therefore, fully accounted for. Through the parametric studies on the characteristics of rock joints, intact rock and grouting materials, various case studies have been considered. The results, illustrated via the design charts, can be directly used during the reinforcement design.

  • The Wolseong Wooden moat is a unique example. Which is a vertical wall made of wood. It shows a changing point how to make the wall by digging a hole and stacking stones vertically. This study tried to to make a assumption about the construction process of the wooden structure found in the Wolseong pit moat. I sorted out wooden elements and then analyzing these features and compared with the results of the excavation. After I made 3D modelling in the order to it was made. This moat is not only a function of digging up the ground to trap water, but also a technique of building structures to maintain walls. It is a valuable material that can show the woodworking engineering techniques of the Silla Dynasty.

  • This paper examines the vertical stress change concentrated on mine pillar which occurs due to the stress disturbance from opening excavation at room and pillar mine by FLAC3D, a finite difference method (FDM) software. The mesh size combination is decided with a careful consideration of relative error and run-time, then its performance is verified. A series of numerical analyses is conducted and the vertical stress at central pillar was observed for the test cases of 1×1 to 11×11 mine pillars, 40 m to 320 m depth with 40 m difference. The results show that the vertical stress of pillar approaches to the similar value with the value estimated by tributary area theory(TAT) when the development area (NP) is increased or the height of overburden (HOB) is decreased, while it is overestimated in the opposite case. Furthermore, it also represents that the vertical stress factor (VSF) converges to a specific value when the depth is increased whille keeping the development area identical.

  • In February 1986, a high-school student reported the discovery of fragments of gilt-bronze burial goods on a mountainside behind a village in Ipjeom-ri, Ungpo-myeon in Iksan. The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage immediately undertook an excavation. Unfortunately, gilt-bronze relics including a band and vertical decorations for a crown, a hat, and shoes had already been collected from Ipjeom-ri Tomb 1 by the student who found them before they could be properly excavated. Also, the interior of the stone chamber of the tomb had been severely disturbed by the time of excavation, making it difficult to identify the precise original locations of the relics within the tomb and hindering the reassembly of the fragments of the gilt-bronze crown. After conservation treatment, the gilt-bronze hat, shoes, and other relics were restored to their original forms and researchers were able to identify incised designs of a three-legged bonghwang(鳳凰), fish scales, lotus flowers, and other motifs. This study presents the major features of the fragments of gilt-bronze relics from Ipjeom-ri Tomb 1 and the methods of their production in order to provide basic material for their restoration and allow the eventual restoration of the giltbronze crown to its original condition.

  • In this study, the influence of the presence of discontinuity planes on the load transfer mechanism and the pattern of loosening zone was studied based on the laboratory test. The trap-door and the reaction plates are installed as the bottom plane of the model box. The vertical discontinuity plane is installed in the dry sand. Various overburden heights and locations of discontinuity planes are applied as major factors in this study. The results show that at higher overburden heights over about 1.5 times the excavation width, the ratio of the transferred stress to the insitu stress converges to a certain value even if the overburden height increases further. The results also show that the discontinuity plane gives relatively larger influence on the load transfer mechanism, that produces the unsymmetrical load concentration, when the discontinuity plane locates within the tunnel width. When the discontinuity plane locates outside the tunnel width, the unsymmetrical load concentration is reduced considerably.
