  • Non-verbal communication cues seem to be increasingly used in social media, such as emoticon, like, follow, etc. A Q methodology study is conducted to explore this phenomenon. Via a series of focus group activities with Facebook heavy users, 34 Q statements concerning online non-verbal communication cues are derived. Different Facebook users conduct Q sorts of these statements based on frequent use basis. Analysis of Q sort result reveals three distinctive usage patterns of non-verbal communication cues in Facebook: 'safe distance keeping' type, 'observing hermit' type and 'fully dedicated aficionado' type. Discussions are made concerning different components of non-verbal communication cues utilized in these groups, respectively, which can provide a theoretical basis for social media design.

  • From a social constructivists' perspective, knowledge is not transmitted by language but it is constructed by social interactions with others. That is, it is viewed in social constructivism that learning is a process in which knowledge is constructed by communicative interactions with more capable others. In this vein, a class might be analyzed and characterized in terms of interactional patterns of teacher-student and student-student in class. For this, a primary math class was selected and observed and it was analyzed by the Flanders category system to investigate the effects of the math teaching based on verbal interactions on the learning of math. The class was taught in a teacher-centered and direct way but in the class math knowledge was taught through univocal communications in the form of question-answer. The results of this study appeared to suggest that verbal interactional patterns should take place frequently in math teaching in the sequence of a teacher's questions$\to$students' extensive responses $\to$ positive feedback for the students' responses by the teacher $\to$ the acceptance of the students' responses $\to$ the teacher's explanation or students' questions. In other words, math might be taught more effectively through the verbal discourse patterns proposed in this study.

Video recorded was classified each 5minutes by researchers. The results were as follows; First, verbal interactions were about 27% and non-verbal interactions were about 73%. Activities unrelated to learning were about 20%. Second, high achievement gifted students enjoyed verbal interactions including discussions. Third, gifted students can be classified 3 types(Spoken-centered, Written-centered and Played-centered) by interactions. The results revealed that gifted student's verbal-nonverbal interactions played an important role in communication between students and teacher as well as students. • In this paper, we implement an AAC(Augmentative and Alternative Communication) system based on image dictionary in order that speech defectives can easily communicate their opinion to others by using images. Normally, those who have a speech defect use only a few limited words to express their intentions and it is an effective way to use images in their communication because they have a difficulty in speaking. Therefore we make verbal images of verb and adjective that play an important role in expressing the speaker's intention, define pattern of semantic relation between the verbal images and noun images, and construct the image dictionary. In this AAC system, when a user clicks a verbal image, the system generates a sentence by selecting noun images which are component parts of corresponding pattern based on semantic relation with the verbal image. We evaluate the implemented system by how efficiently children of speech defect can express their intention and the result shows more than 70% of success rate in communication.

  • In animated films, characters materialize narratives through acting. The narrative is an element to materialize accurate delivery of lines and emotions. The non-verbal actions should express lots of emotions and lines in scenes, and also they can be used as a way of empathy. This study analyzed the visualization factors of narrative focusing on a cat character frequently shown in animated films. For this, the visualization factors of non-verbal actions expressed in characters' personal space and dynamic space were extracted. Based on this, it aims to suggest the emotion expressing method of characters to realize effective narrative visualization. In the future, it aims to be used as reference data in case when producing non-verbal communication for 3D characters.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among infants' nonverbal communication, maternal verbal behaviors and the infants' acquisition of vocabulary. The subjects were 93 pairs of 10 to 18 months old infants and their mothers residing in the Seoul and GyeongGi-Do area. The results were as follows : (1) In terms of the infants' nonverbal communicative means, it appeared that the group of 16~18 month olds utilized more gesture and vocalization. As regards the infants' nonverbal communicative functions in terms of social behavior and joint attention, the group of 16~18 month olds was found to perform more of the behaviors from this category than the other groups. There was a significant difference in the maternal verbal behavior among the different age groups. (2) Among the infants' nonverbal communicative means, gesture and vocalization, there appeared to be a significant relationship between vocalization and the infants' acquisition of vocabulary. In addition, there was an important relationship between the high usage of infants' nonverbal communicative functions with behavior regulation and the high usage of joint attention and the successful acquisition of vocabulary among infants. (3) Social play, which is a maternal verbal behavior categorized as one of the strategies for getting infants' attention, was significantly related to the acquisition of infants' vocabulary. (4) When mothers used more imitating sounds and mimetic words, requests for information, descriptions, conventional social expressions, and imitation to enhance responsiveness, infants were found to have acquired a larger vocabulary.

  • Humans develop and maintain relationship through communication. Communication is largely divided into verbal communication and non-verbal communication. Verbal communication involves the use of a language or characters, while non-verbal communication utilizes body language. We use gestures with language together in conversations of everyday life. Gestures belong to non-verbal communication, and can be offered using a variety of shapes and movements to deliver an opinion. For this reason, gestures are spotlighted as a means of implementing an NUI/NUX in the fields of HCI and HRI. In this paper, using Kinect and the geometric features of the hand, we propose a method for recognizing the number of fingers and detecting the hand area. A Kinect depth image can be used to detect the hand region, with the finger number identified by comparing the distance of outline and the central point of a hand. Average recognition rate for recognizing the number of fingers is 98.5%, from the proposed method, The proposed method would help enhancing the functionality of the human computer interaction by increasing the expression range of gestures.
