한국 대학벤처캐피탈의 투자성과에 대한 연구 (The Performance of University Venture Capitals in Korea)

  • 대학이 보유한 지적재산과 인적자원을 활용하여 기술이전을 촉진하고 창업을 지원하는 역할에 대한 관심은 국내뿐만 아니라 세계적으로 확대되고 있는 추세이다. 한국의 대학에서도 다양한 조직을 통하여 기술이전과 창업을 장려하고 있으며 대학기술지주회사는 그 중심적인 역할을 수행하고 있다. 하지만 현재까지 대학기술지주회사의 사업성과는 기술사업화 경험 및 전담 인력의 부족 그리고 법적·제도적 장애요인으로 인해 저조한 실정이다. 최근에는 기존의 자회사 설립을 통한 사업화 시도와 더불어 대학기술지주회사가 직접적으로 액셀러레이터 또는 벤처케피탈의 역할을 맡아 스타트업을 발굴하고 성장을 지원하여 기업가적 대학으로의 변신을 주도하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 대학벤처캐피탈과 그 투자대상인 스타트업의 특성을 분석하였다. 또한 대학벤처캐피탈의 투자성과를 측정하고 그 결정 요인을 실증분석하였다. 대학벤처캐피탈은 주로 설립된 지 3년 이내의 신생 스타트업에 초기 투자자금을 지원하여 민간 벤처캐피탈의 후속투자를 유인하는 역할을 하고 있었다. 이러한 후속투자 유치를 대학벤처캐피탈의 주요 성과지표로 활용하여 대학벤처캐피탈이 다른 민간 투자자 및 정부의 지원 프로그램과 연계하여 투자할 경우 가장 투자성과가 높다는 것을 발견하였다. 이러한 결과는 대학과 산업계 그리고 정부의 협력이 스타트업의 성공가능성을 높이는 핵심적인 요소라는 것을 보여준다. 본 논문에서는 기존 연구와는 차별화하여 대학기술지주회사의 액셀러레이터 또는 벤처캐피탈의 역할을 최초로 분석하였다는 데 그 의의가 있다.

벤처캐피탈회사의 지분투자와 벤처기업 최초공모주 성과 분석 (An Empirical Study on the Equity Investment of Venture Capitalists on the IPOs Performance)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 우리나라 벤처캐피탈회사의 지분투자가 벤처기업 최초공모주에 미치는 성과를 분석하는데 있다. 표본기업은 1997년 7월 1일부터 2006년 6월 30일까지 9년 동안 코스닥시장에서 IPO 당시 벤처캐피탈회사가 투자한 벤처기업 101개이다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 벤처기업에 단독 투자하는 벤처캐피탈회사보다 공동 투자하는 벤처캐피탈회사가 공모회사와 투자자 사이 정보비대칭을 완화하는 바람직한 투자행태를 가지고 있음을 발견하였다. 본 연구는 Bygrave(1987), Lerner(1994), 진태홍(2001) 등의 연구를 지지하고 있다. 둘째, 벤처캐피탈회사가 후기 투자하는 벤처기업보다 초기 투자하는 벤처기업에서 IPO 초과수익률을 더 높게 나타내어 초기에 이미 투자한 투자자는 정보의 우위성을 이용하여 후기단계에서 벤처캐피탈회사 자신이 투자한 벤처기업의 가치를 과장한 유인이 있었음을 실증하고 있다. 이러한 결과는 Lerner(1994) 의 연구를 지지하고 있다. 셋째, 벤처캐피탈회사의 투자지분율이 IPO 성과에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과 벤처캐피탈회사가 벤처기업에 투자하는 지분비율이 높을수록 IPO 초과수익률이 더 낮게 나타남을 보여주고 있다.

  • On industry highly developed and competition with each company, technology is considered as the one of the most significant variables in the era of technology competition. So, the needs of technology valuation and valuating technology competitiveness are increasing to measure value of company. However, in many cases of valuation tools, elaborate valuation technique is required all the more by reason of difficulty of defining the valuation target, the valuation perspective and the purpose of valuation. This study tried to define valuation framework of technology competitiveness for technology intensive small medium venture company to valuate technology environment and company's capability related with technology synthetically as well as technology itself which company uses. And also the purpose of technology valuation, the purpose of technology competitiveness, basic elements of technology valuation, trend of technology valuation in major countries including Korea are presented and analyzed.

유니콘 기업의 성공에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 탐색적 연구: 중국 IT 기업을 중심으로 (An Exploratory Study of a Chinese IT Unicorn Company)

  • Purpose - As the research of Chinese unicorn companies is still in early stages, this paper aims to investigate the factors that influence the success of Chinese IT unicorns. Design/methodology/approach - This study is conducted as a single case study and used various sources such as interviews, internal data, press releases, IR data, etc. to enhance the reliability and validity. Findings - First, the characteristics of the start-up team, social capital, and strategies as internal factors affect the success of unicorns. Among them, the more Guanxi in social capital factors, the greater the possibility of growing into an IT unicorn company. Second, the role of venture capital and geographical location have been identified that two factors affect the success of unicorns. In the role of venture capital, it has been confirmed that the world's top-level venture capital company or a company that has been invested by "BATJ" is more likely to grow into a unicorn company in China. Research implications or Originality - This paper distinguishes between internal and external factors to explain the factors that affect the growth of unicorn companies, which lays the foundation for future research, such as the exploration of the unicorns and the development of new variables.

  • This case study aims at investigating the factors which make venture firms successful. It analysedthree high-performance venture firms originated from the government-financed rese arch institute, the company and the university on the viewpoint of 'dynamic capability' theory. In this case study, technology integration capability and administrative innovation capability were identified as success factors of the three venture firms. The study also presented the role of the incubating organizations. Although incubating organizations supported technological and managerial resource-building of the entrepreneurs, there was not active interactive-learning between venture firms and incubating organizations after spin-off.

  • Purpose - Focusing on Haier, a successful corporate venture in China, we analyse the operating mechanism and success factors of corporate venture, and reveal the necessary factors for the successful implementation of corporate venture. Design/methodology/approach - This study is a single case study centred on Haier, a successful corporate venture in China. Findings - The operational process of Haier's corporate venture includes six key aspects: project selection, team building, resource allocation and support, project implementation, risk control measures, performance evaluation and rewards. In terms of success factors, the support of top management with leadership capability of value creation and sharing is very important for the success of corporate venture. Secondly, a multi reward mechanism can be introduced to motivate employees and improve performance. Thirdly, it is important to integrate corporate culture into the operating mechanism of an corporate venture. Fourthly, flexible operations that break down rigid organisational boundaries and transform the organisation into a more open platform for entrepreneurship can increase the likelihood of success. Finally, empowering employees with operational discretion can also have a positive impact on the success of an Corporate Venture. Research implications or Originality - This study contributes to theory and practice by analysing the success conditions of corporate venture, providing new understanding and drawing new perspectives, especially from the experience of Haier. The results suggest strategies and flexibility for successfully pursuing corporate venture, and provide important experience for international companies to help them gain competitive advantage in global competition. It also helps corporate leaders to promote new directions and innovations and improve their strategies to respond to dynamic environments.

패션기업 CEO의 감성적 리더십이 기업성과에 미치는 영향 - 조직문화의 조절효과 연구 - (Empirical study on the influence of emotional leadership on business performance in the fashion industry - Focused on the moderating effects of organizational culture -)

  • The purpose of this study is to assess whether the emotional leadership of the CEO of a fashion company has a significant influence on corporate performance. In this study, a survey was conducten on employees of fashion companies from August 1 to 30, 2015, and 350 copies of questionnaires were collected and used for analysis. Factor analysis, reliability analysis, and regression analysis were employed to analyze the data using SPSS software (ver. 21.0). According to the study results, if a fashion company CEO has higher emotional leadership, it leads to an increase in the job satisfaction and performance of the staff members, and an improvement in new product performance thanks to more investment and development and an expanded R&D staff. Additionally, the higher emotional leadership of the CEO contributes to an increase in operating profits, sales, and market share. Therefore, the importance of organizational culture was confirmed by its regulation effect on the emotional leadership and management performance of a fashion company. According to the results of this study, the emotional leadership of a CEO plays an important role in improving the performance of a fashion company, and future studies are needed to identify how to enhance the corporate performance of a fashion company from various perspectives.

코스닥시장 우량벤처기업 판별모형 개발에 관한 연구 (An Empirical Study on Financial Characteristics of KOSDAQ Venture Companies)

  • 본 논문은 선행연구에서 유의성 있는 지표로 판명된 투하자본수익률(ROIC)과 총자산영업이익률을 기준변수로 하여 2005년 12월 말 현재 최종표본기업 250개의 우량벤처기업과 비우량벤처기업의 정도를 분석하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 정준판별함수는 2가지 기준 모두 판별함수의 판별력이 양호하였으며, 집단간 판별 점수의 차이가 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 변수들 간의 상대적인 중요도를 나타내는 표준화된 정준판별함수계수의 설명력이 높고, 판별함수에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 변수가 총자산영업이익률임을 보였다. 둘째, 판별분석을 통해 도출된 선형판별식에 의한 우량벤처기업과 비우량벤처기업의 판별결과도 2가지 기준 모두 비우량벤처기업을 우량벤처기업으로 판별하는 오분류율이 각각 4%, 2.4%로 나타나 표본에 대한 분류정확도는 각각 98.0%, 98.8%로 밝혀졌다. 또한 상호교차법에 의한 오분류율도 각각 4.8%, 3.2%로 나타나 97.6%, 98.4% 정확도를 나타내고 있어 도출된 판별함수가 우수한 판별력이 있음을 실증하였다.

최고경영진의 인적 및 사회적 자본이 정부의 R&D 지원제도 활용과 초기 성과에 미치는 영향 (Top Management's Human and Social Capital Effect on Governmental R&D Support System Utilization and Success)

  • Purpose - This study attempts to analyze whether or not there are characteristics among the top management of companies that promote corporate performance at venture companies. It investigates the characteristics of the human and social capital that are inherent in top management at a venture company and conducts an empirical analysis of hypotheses examining if these characteristics will affect utilization of the governmental R&D support system as well as affect the firm's initial success. Research design, data, and methodology - This study conducted theoretical and empirical research together to accomplish the goal of the study. The pilot study researched human capital and social capital as the independent variables; the governmental R&D support system as the parameter; and, the initial success as the dependent variable. The empirical study carried out research on the model, establishment of hypotheses, and the statistical treatment. A survey was conducted targeting top management of high-tech venture companies in Daedeok Innopolis; 500 questionnaires were distributed; and, 222 were collected. Results - The human and social capital inherent in top management at venture companies in the early stages of their existence become good evaluation data for those who are invested in similar resources. If top management includes strong human and social capital, access to external resources will be easier; these will have a positive influence on the selection of overnmental support systems; and, this proper support will also have a positive influence on the initial success of the venture company. The results revealed the following. First, it was found that when the educational level and functional background, (the top management human capital), are the output function, top management human capital had a significant influence on selection of governmental R&D support funds. Second, it was found that the internal social capital and external social capital, (the top management social capital), had a significant influence on selection of governmental R&D support tasks. Third, it was found that selection of the governmental R&D support tasks at the start of the venture company had a positive influence on the corporate financial performance such as sales, business profits, and the increase in workers; and, had a significant influence on nonfinancial performance such as market share, competitive position, product competitiveness, and the future product development. Conclusions - Selection of the governmental R&D support system is not recognized as part of the direct sales of a venture company in its early stages, but as it can reduce costs for technical development and helps significantly in creating test products and mass production, it has a positive influence on the company's financial performance and nonfinancial performance as a result. Therefore, companies should take great efforts to frequently be selected as a candidate in the governmental R&D support system, as it can help facilitate R&D that requires extensive funds. As a result, companies can expect effects such as job creation and patent applications and they can advance future product sales.

공공조달수요를 통한 창업벤처기업 지원의 거시경제 파급효과 (Impacts on the Support to Start-up Venture Company using Public Purchases)

  • 본 연구는 창업벤처기업에 대한 수요 측 지원이 거시경제에 미치는 파급효과를 분석한 것이다. 분석모형은 Lucas(1978)의 기업가의 통제범위 모형을 준용한 동태일반균형모형을 활용하였다. 분석결과 창업벤처기업의 공공조달 비중을 5.7%에서 10%로 확대시켰을 때, 창업벤처기업의 실질생산이 약 46.17% 증가하고 벤처기업 수는 약 150%가 증가하는 것으로 분석되었다. 또한 벤처기업을 통한 일자리는 약 61.56% 증가하는 것으로 분석되었다. 그리고 공공조달 지원과 동일한 금액을 공급부문에 대한 지원금으로 창업벤처기업에 지원해 줄 경우 경제적 효과는 크게 줄어드는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 정부가 공급 측 지원 정책을 실시하면 공급 확대가 창업벤처기업제품의 가격 하락을 야기해 지원정책의 효과를 반감시키기 때문으로 풀이된다. 따라서 정부는 창업벤처기업 지원 시 공공조달을 통한 수요 측 지원을 확대하고 창업벤처기업에 대한 단순 지원금 지급을 축소함으로써 정책효과를 극대화 하려는 노력을 기울여야 할 것이다.
