  • In this study, vanadium dioxide ($VO_2$) powder well known as a thermochromic material was prepared from $V_2O_5$ powder and oxalic acid dihydrate by hydrothermal and calcination process at various conditions. The chemical bonding and crystal structures in addition to thermal property of samples were determined using FE-SEM, XRD, XPS, and DSC. Also, spectroscopic and thermochromic properties of film samples were analyzed by UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy after the thin film was prepared from the sol dispersed with the size of below 50 nm by the ball-milling of powder sample. With increasing the calcination temperature, the phase transition temperature of samples increased from $40^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$ due to the increase of particle size.

  • Vanadium Dioxide has been investigated for use as a "spectrally-selective" window coating to block infrared transmission and reduce the loss of building interior heat through windows. The preparation of thermochromic $VO_2$ powder by the reductive reaction with hydrogen was studied. The reductive reaction method has many advantages of easy and mass production of $VO_2$ powder according to controlled reaction without semi-conductor equipments like sputter and beam evaporator. The reaction temperature, time, concentration of reductive gas, post-annealing condition and W addition as dopant would affect the characterization of $VO_2$ powder and its thermochromism. Many applications for electrical device and energy-saving technologies is expected.

  • The change in vanadium amount according to the growth direction of vanadium-doped semi-insulated (SI) SiC single crystals using high-purity SiC powder was investigated. High-purity SiC powder and a porous graphite (PG) inner crucible were placed on opposite sides of SiC seed crystals. SI SiC crystals were grown on 2 inch 6H-SiC Si-face seeds at a temperature of $2,300^{\circ}C$ and growth pressure of 10~30 mbar of argon atmosphere, using the physical vapor transport (PVT) method. The sliced SiC single crystals were polished using diamond slurry. We analyzed the polytype and quality of the SiC crystals using high-resolution X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The resistivity of the SI SiC crystals was analyzed using contactless resistivity mapping (COREMA) measurements.

  • The pure crystalline $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ powder has been prepared by a simple solid state reaction of $Li_2CO_3$ and $V_2O_3$ precursors under nitrogen gas containing 10 mol % hydrogen gas flow. The structure of $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ powder was analyzed using Xray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The stoichiometric $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ powder was used as anode active material for lithium secondary batteries. Its electrochemical properties were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and constant current methods using lithium foil electrode. The observed specific discharge capacity and charge capacity were 360 mAh/g and 260 mAh/g during the first cycle, respectively. In addition, the cyclic efficiency of this cell was 72.2% in the first cycle. The specific capacity of $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ anode rapidly declines as the current rate increases and retains only 30 % of the capacity of 0.1C rate at 1C rate. The crystallinity of the $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ anode decrease as discharge reaction proceeds. However, the relative intensity of main peaks was almost recovered when the cell was charged up to 1.5 V.

  • Vanadium oxides supported on zirconia and modified with MoO₃were prepared by adding Zr(OH)₄powder into a mixed aqueous solution of ammonium metavanadate and ammonium molybdate followed by drying and calcining at high temperatures. The characterization of prepared catalysts was performed using FTIR, Raman spectroscopy and solid-state $^{51}V$ NMR. In the case of a calcination temperature of 773 K, for samples containing low loading of $V_2O_5$, below 15 wt %, vanadium oxide was in a highly dispersed state, while for samples containing high loading of $V_2O_5$, equal to or above 15 wt %, vanadium oxide was well crystallized because the $V_2O_5$ loading exceeded the formation of a monolayer on the surface of $ZrO_2$. The $ZrV_2O_7$ compound was formed through the reaction of $V_2O_5\;and\;ZrO_2$ at 873 K and the compound decomposed into $V_2O_5\;and\;ZrO_2$ at 1073 K, which were confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy and solid-state $^{51}V$ NMR. IR spectroscopic studies of ammonia adsorbed on $V_2O_5-MoO_3/ZrO_2$ showed the presence of both Lewis and Bronsted acids.

  • Several one-electron reduction products of ${\gamma}$(1,2)-[$H_nSiV_2W_{10}O_{40}]^{(6-n)-}$ were separated by precipitating or coprecipitating with diamagnetic host compounds at different pH. Mono-and diprotonated species, 1 and 2, in powder samples exhibit aPR spectra characteristic of a mononuclear oxovanadium species, indicating that the unpaired electron is trapped at one vanadium atom. The EPR spectrum of the unprotonated species 0 shows 15 parallel lines, indicating that the unpaired electron interacts equally with two vanadium atoms. While different species were precipitated depending upon the pH of the solution and the charge of the host anion, only one species 1' was formed in the frozen solutions at pH 3.2-4.7. The EPR spectrum of 1' indicates that the unpaired electron is trapped at one vanadium atom and 1/16 of the spin density is delocalized onto the second vanadium atom. The species 1' is probably another form of the monoprotonated species. The EPR spectra show that some of 2 transform into 1 and some of 0 transform into 1' in the solid state at low temperatures. It is suggested that proton transfer between the heteropolyanion and water molecues in the solid state is involved in these transformations.

  • In order to develop the nano-sized WC powder that improved the hardness of hardmetals, carbothermal reduction of WO3 by C was examined by using the thermogravimetric analysis. At the direct carburization reaction path of $WO_3{\rightarrow}WO_{2.72}{\rightarrow}WO_2{\rightarrow}W{\rightarrow}W_2C{\rightarrow}WC$, the nano-sized grain was generated at the reaction stage $WO_{2.72}$ to $WO_2$ and W. For trial production, the intermediate products which consists of metal and carbide phases obtained by the first heating has been carburized to the final WC powder. We succeeded in the development of the WC powder of about 70nm. In addition, the nano-sized WC powder in which the vanadium of the most effective grain growth inhibitor was uniformly dispersed was developed.

  • The activation temperatures and hydrogen sorption rates of $Ti_{80-X}Zr_{20}V_X$ alloys were evaluated at room temperature. The alloy powders were prepared by arc melting and then hydride-dehydride(HDH) process. The alloy powders were apt to activate by increase of vanadium in Ti-Zr-V alloys. The easy activation was explained in terms of surface oxygen content which decreased with increase of vanadium on Ti-Zr-V alloys.

  • Vanadium pentoxide ($V_2O_5$) powder was prepared and mixed with Molybdenum Oxides ($MoM_3$) to form Mo-doped and -undoped $VO_2$ films by a sol-gel method on graphite conductive substrates. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the chemical compositions and microstructures of the Mo-doped and -undoped $VO_2$ films. The variation of electrical resistance was measured as a function of temperature and stoichiometric composition between vanadium and molybdenum. In this study, it was found that Mo-doped and -undoped $VO_2$ shows the typical negative temperature coefficient (NTC) behavior. As the amount of the molybdenum increases, the electrical resistance of Modoped $VO_2$ film gets reduced under the transition temperature and a linear decrease in the transition temperature is observed. From these experimental results, we can conclude that the electrical resistance behavior with temperature change of $VO_2$ films can be utilized as a self-heating source with the electrical current flowing through the graphite substrate.
