  • In this work we present a study undertaken with in-service mathematics teachers of primary and secondary school where we describe and analyze the didactical competences needed to implement an innovative design in geometry applying Van Hiele's models. The relationship between such competences and an ideal teacher profile is also studied. Teachers' epistemology is established in terms of didactical competences and we can see that this epistemology is an element that helps us understand the difficulties that teachers face in practice when implementing an innovative curriculum, in this case, geometry based on the Van Hiele theory.

  • The purpose of this article is to devise the activities based on van Hiele levels of geometric thought using computer software, Geometer\\\\`s Sketchpad(GSP) as a tool. The most challenging task facing teachers of geometry is the development of student facility for understanding geometric concepts and properties. The National Council of teachers of Mathematics(Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics, 1991; Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, 2000) and the National Re-search Council(Hill, Griffiths, Bucy, et al., Everybody Counts, 1989) have supported the development of exploring and conjecturing ability for helping students to have mathematical power. The examples of the activities built is GSP for students ar designed to illustrate the ways in which van Hiele\\\\`s model can be implemented into classroom practice.

  • The aim of this study was to explore the grade 1-3 students' geometrical thinking level descriptors based on van Hiele level descriptors. The data were collected through collection of geometric curriculum materials such as indicators and learning standards in Basic Education Core Curriculum and mathematics textbook for grades 1-3. The findings were found that 1) Inconsistency between descriptors appeared on mathematics curriculum and Thai mathematics textbooks. 2) Using topics on textbooks as criterion for exploring 5 of 7 descriptors appeared on Thai mathematics textbook indicated geometrical thinking levels based on van Hiele's model merely level 0 (Visualization) across textbooks for grades 1-3.

  • The purpose of this paper is to perceive the problems of current geometry education in the middle school mathematics, to develop some learning materials fitted for the mathematising activities based on Freudenthal's learning theories and to analyze the mathematising process followed by teaching-learning activities. For this purpose, we design activity-oriented learning materials for geometry based on Freudenthal's learning theories, and appropriate teaching-learning models are established for the middle school geometry at the 8-NA stage level according to the theory of van Hiele's geometry learning steps. After applied to the practical lessons, the effects of mathematical activities are analyzed.

  • This paper suggested a geometry learning model which relates an exploratory learning model with GSP applications, Such a model adopts GSP's capability of visualizing dynamic geometric figures and exploratory learning method's advantages of discovering properties and relations of geometric problem proving and concepts associated with geometric inferencing of students. The research was conducted for 3 middle school students by applying the proposed model for 6times at computer laboratory. The overall procedure was videotaped so that the collected data was later analyzed by qualitative methodology. The analysis indicated that the students with less than van Hiele 4 level took advantages of adoption our proposed model to gain concrete understandings of geometric principles and concepts with GSP. One of the lessons learned from this study suggested that the roles of students and a teacher who want to employ the proposed model need to change their roles respectively.
