  • This paper proposes a test system for a valve and poles building blocks used for large scale inverters such as STATCOM, SSSC, UPFC and VSC HVDC. Power semiconductors in the valve are normally connected in series to withstand switching voltage much larger than the voltage rating of a single power semiconductor. Therefore, there is a need to verify if the dynamic voltage sharing during switching in a valve is satisfactory. In this paper, we propose a test system that provides the necessary test condition: voltage and current in the valve using resonant circuits. A test scheme for a single phase inverter consisting two poles is also proposed. The performance of the inverter pole has to be verified at the factory test, before the system is installed at the site to secure the reliability of the system. The proposed scheme makes it possible to confirm if the pole can withstand voltage and current switching condition and handle loss.

  • This paper describes a switching-level operation analysis of BTB(Back-To-Back) converter for HVDC(high voltage DC) application based on MMC(modular multi-level converter). A switching-level operation analysis for BTB converter is very important to understand the converter operation in detail and check the voltage and current transients in each components. However, the development of switching-level simulation model for the actual size BTB Converter is very difficult because the MMC normally has more than 150 sub-modules for each arm. So, a switching level simulation model for the 11-level MMC-based BTB converter was developed with PSCAD/EMTDC software, which has 12 sub-modules for the positive arm and another 12 sub-modules for the negative arm. The DC-voltage balance algorithm, the circulating-current reduction algorithm, the harmonic reduction algorithm, and the redundancy operation algorithm were included in this simulation model. The developed simulation model can be utilized to analyze the MMC-based BTB converter for HVDC application in switching level and to develop the protection scheme for the MMC-based BTB converter for HVDC application.

  • In this paper, the PSC PWM method is chosen as the optimal modulation method for a 20MW VSC HVDC, with consideration of the harmonic distortion of the output voltage, the switching frequency, and the control implementation difficulty. In addition, a new PSC PWM method is proposed in order to achieve an easy application and to solve the redundant control problems encountered in the previous PSC PWM method. To verify the proposed PSC PWM method, PSCAD/EMTDC simulations for an 11-level MMC RTDS HILS test and an 11-level MMC prototype converter test were performed. As can be seen from the results of these tests, the proposed PSC PWM method shows good results in an 11-level MMC with redundant sub-modules.

  • A modular multilevel converter is widely adapted for a high-voltage direct current power transmission system. This study proposes a design methodology for a novel digital control that mitigates the negative effects caused by time delay, including communication transport delay for a modular multilevel converter. The modeling and negative effect of time delay are analyzed theoretically in a frequency domain, and its compensation methodology based on an inverse model is described fully with practical considerations. The proposed methodology is verified through several simulation results using a modular 21-level converter system.

  • This study uses a level selection algorithm with fixed sampling frequency for modular multilevel converter (MMC) systems. Theoretically, the proposed method increases the level infinitely while the sampling time remains the same. The proposed method called cluster stream buffer (CSB) consists of several clusters, wherein each cluster is composed of 32 submodules that depend on the level of the submodules in the MMC system. To increase the level of the MMC system, additional clusters are used, and the sampling time between clusters is determined from the sampling time between levels needed for utilizing the entire level from the MMC system. This method is crucial in the control of MMC-type HVDC systems because it improves scalability and precision.

  • The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province is currently promoting the "Carbon-free Island by 2030" policy, which requires the use of renewable energy instead of fossil fuel so that the island will have no carbon gases generated by 2030. To implement this policy, the island plans to build a wind power plant capacity of 1.09 GW in 2020; this wind power plant is currently ongoing. However, when wind power output is greater than the power demand of the island, the stability of Jeju Island power system must be prepared for it because it can be a problem. Therefore, this study proposes a voltage source-type MMC-HVDC system linked to mainland Korea to expand the wind power penetration limits of Jeju Island under the stable operation of the Jeju Island power system. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, computer simulations using the PSCAD/EMTDC program are conducted, and the results are demonstrated. The scenarios of the computer simulation consist of two cases. First, the MMC-HVDC system is operated under variable wind power in the Jeju Island power system. Second, it is operated under the predicted Jeju Island power system in 2020.

  • In general, there are various pulse width modulation(PWM) methods simply using the offset voltage injection in voltage source converter(VSC). In accordance with the AC side voltage synthesis method with the offset voltage, DC side voltage utilization factor in VSC is changed. Also, this can apply equally to the MMC system. In other words, if the DC side capacity of the high voltage DC(HVDC) transmission system is determined, the maximum reactive power which can be supplied to the AC side can be changed according to the applied output voltage synthesis method with the offset voltage. In this paper, the leg energy pulsation in MMC system according to the AC side output voltage synthesis method with offset voltage which several representative PWM are applied to are mathematically analyzed and compared with each other. Finally, the above results are verified by simulation emulating the 400MVA full-scale MMC system to determine the consistency of the mathematical analysis.

  • Droop control schemes have been widely employed in the control strategies for Multi-Terminal Direct Current (MTDC) system for its high reliability. Under the conventional DC voltage-active power droop control, the droop slope applies a proportional relationship between DC voltage error and active power error for power sharing. Due to the existence of DC network impedance and renewable resource fluctuation, there is inevitably a DC voltage deviation from the droop characteristic, which in turn results in inaccurate control of converter's power. To tackle this issue, a piecewise droop control with DC voltage dead band or active power dead band is implemented into controller design. Besides, an advanced droop control scheme with versatile function is proposed, which enables the converter to regulate DC voltage and AC voltage, control active and reactive power, get participated into frequency control, and feed passive network. The effectiveness of the proposed control method has been verified by simulation results.
