Comparison Study Between Landline and Mobile VOD (유무선 모바일 VOD 인터넷간 차이 연구)

  • This study compares choice of contents genre between mobile VOD service users and landline internet VOD service users. Overall, males showed a higher rate of VOD usage than females and a variety of contents were used for entertainment, programs and mood alteration. In addition, a higher frequency of VOD usage showed a higher rate of VOD usage and also resulted in higher level of satisfaction. Also, the quality of landline internet VOD service showed to be higher than mobile VOD service. This suggests that programs for mobile VOD needs to be developed as well as a more open and simple rate system. In addition, subjects of this study showed to use VOD services mainly for entertainment purposes, suggesting that a variety of programs need to be developed in order to higher the level of satisfaction of its users.

Performance of Broadcasting Contents by Platforms (방송 플랫폼별 콘텐츠 유통 성과)

  • This study investigated the attributes of the popular programs by various broadcasting related platforms(on-air, VOD, SNS) and the relationship between the outcomes of these platforms in order to get the implications of broadcasting contents distribution strategy in multi-platform era. First, the study found that drama programs of territorial broadcasting showed the most high performance in on-air platform while comedy entertainment programs got the outstanding achievement in VOD platform. Second, although it had the low ratings in on-air platform, the program could be highly probable to get a great deal of VOD hits if it had attracted the younger audience. Knowledge programs showed the similar outcome between on-air and VOD platforms. Third, the study found that the factor which had a significant influence on VOD performance was the amount of buzz in SNS. These results suggest that broadcasting content distribution strategy in multi-platform era needs the understanding of the segmented target audiences of content and the analysis of trait of each platform.

  • Recently, VOD market is getting increased and most of public, educational organization, enterprises are providing service as content managing system of WMV standard subordinated to Window OS of Microsoft company. VOD CMS of WMV standard have problem that frequent cut-off, small-size of screen, and image quality which is also chronic problem. In order to solve this problem, technology solving the problem has developed through minimization of buffering time, screen size, high quality sound, and high quality image by image codec and streaming engine which is H. 264. But there are still a problem that systematic management of contents or distribution is difficult. This study expected that there would be a effect preoccupying significant stand of world wide H.264 high quality image mobile VOD managing market by securing domestic on-line VOD contents integrated managing technology by designing system for image VOD contents management having a limit in wmv market and combining H.264 which is new technology.

Effect of the VOD Holdback Strategy Change on IPTV and Cable TV VOD Usage (VOD 홀드백 정책 변화가 IPTV와 케이블TV VOD 이용에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examines the effect of changes in the content distribution strategy on VOD usage by comparing the VOD usage pattern following the changes in the IPTV and Digital Cable SVOD holdback policy. The result of this study shows that after changing the SVOD holdback from one week to three weeks, the VOD usage decreased up to 50 percent while paid VOD revenue increased as a result of the rise in PPM. The time series analysis shows statistical decrease in the number of SVOD usage, SVOD usage per user, and PPV revenue per user while VOD revenue per user increased significantly. Moreover, SVOD usage within the drama genres such as mini-series, weekend series, weekend special series, and sitcom decreased significantly. This research provides a case study on the effect of the broadcaster's content distribution policy on the VOD user behavior thus proposing broadcasters and platform operators the ways of establishing distribution strategy as well as invigorating the VOD usage.

  • 디지털 TV 시대를 맞아 다양한 형태의 사용자와 상호작용할 수 있는 콘텐츠의 개발이 활성화되고 있고, 이에 따른 IPTV 의 활성화와 함께 방송 콘텐츠의 2 차 이용에 사용되는 VOD 의 제작과 활용이 높아지고 있다. 제작되는 VOD 는 2 차 이용을 위해 영화, 드라마, 다큐 등 다양한 콘텐츠를 포함하고 있는데, 이를 시청하기 위해서는 반드시 다운로드를 받아야 한다. 이러한 다운로드는 1 차적인 사용자 인증 및 기기 인증 후에는 일방적인 전송을 수행하고, 이미 다운로드 되어 있는 파일은 별도의 처리 없이 재생이 가능하기 때문에 VOD 의 불법적인 배포에 대응하기 어렵다. 따라서 VOD 콘텐츠가 다운로드 된 후, 반복 재생 시에 영상에 포함된 인증 정보를 통해 콘텐츠의 보호를 위한 모델을 제안한다.

Study on the Relationship between the Pay TV Subscriber's Genre Preference and VOD Purchase : Focusing on the Movie VOD of IPTV Service (<유료 방송 가입자의 장르 선호도와 VOD 구매의 관계에 관한 연구:IPTV 영화 VOD 이용을 중심으로>)

  • This paper investigates the relationship between the Pay TV subscriber's genre preference and VOD purchase by analyzing actual purchase data of movie VOD of IPTV subscribers for 8 months. The result shows as follows. First, in case of purchasing movie contents below 4000 won, user's genre preference was higher than that of using contents over 4,000 won. This means the subscribers tend to follow their genre preference when the mass-typed recommendation is limited. Second, those who purchase foreign contents show higher genre preference than those who purchase domestic movies. Third, subscribers who purchase more frequently and much more tend to use more diverse genres. Heavy users or those who have higher willingness to pay would consume more diverse contents. It implies that VOD use would increase by supplying the personal recommendation service based on the subscriber's genre preference.

  • The purpose of this study is to search the correlation between real-time viewing and OTT VOD usage. The study is based on the ratings and VOD download data, collected from TNmS and pooq. And this study focused on the ratings, 2049 ratings, OTT VOD download over the past 7 days, OTT VOD download over the past 30 days. The results showed that there were positive correlation in all genres(drama, entertainment, current affairs). First, there was a correlation between ratings and OTT VOD download over the past 7 days, between 2049 ratings and OTT VOD download over the past 7 days. Next, there was a correlation between ratings and OTT VOD download over the past 30 days, between 2049 ratings and OTT VOD download over the past 30 days. Finally, there was somewhat different among rankings of the ratings and VOD download.

The Automation of VOD Content Posting by Detection Black Frame of Broadcasting Program (방송프로그램 블랙프레임 검출을 통한 VOD 콘텐츠 자동생성)

  • As the nonlinear viewing patterns are getting generalized, the needs for VOD service of consumers are increasing in TV, webTV. But today's VOD system is all automated, except the part for posting contents. This study proposes the method for automation of the content posting. For this we analyzed the broadcast program structures by genre in order to detect the transition point between the advertisement and the contents. It was found that regular black frames were set in the transition during fade in and out. We propose an efficient approach to automatically detect the black frames using RGB values of each frame that enable VOD content posting and replace an advertisement in VOD service.

  • Recently, although the requirement of quality of VOD content has been transferred upto the class of HD, conventional management systems characterized by OS dependency are truly limited in quality of video image, stability, and compatibility of network environments. In addition most of the content management systems realize very limited capabilities for the real affairs of content management and distribution services in such an OS dependent environment. In this paper, we propose a new scheme of HD-Class VOD Content Management System to solve these problems. We design and implement the proposed system based on open sources by using H.264 video compression method. The proposed system offers high quality content management method based on opened systems and independent on-line distribution method so that it can be realized as an integrated management scheme for VOD contents. Moreover, our system solves the problems of occasional cutting-down video, small screen, and poor image quality that exist in the conventional wmv-type CMS. According to the result of performance evaluation, our system maintains sufficient performance and tolerence for the case of large scale HD content operations or fabrications. We expect that the proposed integrated DB scheme will especially be effective when the content management applications are changed from Internet Web environments to mobile terminal environments.

Determinants of Paid-VOD Re-Purchasing Intention in IPTV Platform (IPTV 이용자의 유료 VOD 재구매 의도 결정 요인)

  • This paper investigated main determinants of paid-VOD user satisfaction and re-purchasing intention in IPTV platform. The findings showed that 'perceived system quality' was the significant antecedent variable influencing 'perceived usefulness' and 'perceived cost'. Meanwhile, 'perceived content quality' had the insignificant effect on 'perceived cost, while strongly and positively affecting 'perceived playfulness'. Regarding the relative size effect on the relationship between the belief variables and re-purchasing intention, content quality, cost, usefulness and playfulness were higher in the order, implying that functional benefits, like price and quality is the most crucial factor facilitating re-purchasing paid-VOD. Likewise, several variables associated with user characteristics and situation were employed as moderating variables to examine their impact on the process of formation of belief, satisfaction and intention. We found that there were distinct differences in value cognition and satisfaction level among users, depending on IPTV acceptance period, paid-VOD purchasing frequency, age and income level.
