  • In this thesis, Traffic information which is provided to the VMS used a FM frequency and provides real-time traffic information about the mobile production unit system which designed and produced and a quality evaluated. Result of the research, we will be able to confirm converted audio and text information from traffic information is linked with VMS information, FM broadcast traffic information to motorists passing through it were found to be and as a result of this study, which sees raises the effectiveness of VMS users and using VMS to build low-cos transport infrastructure will be an opportunity.

  • Variable message sign (VMS), which is used for providing real-time information on traffic conditions and incidents, is one of the important components of intelligent transportation systems. VMS messages need to meet the requirements with the consideration of human factors that messages should be readable and understandable while driving. This study developed a legibility distance model for VMS messages using in-vehicle differential global positioning data (DGPS). Traffic conditions, highway geometric conditions, and VMS message characteristics were investigated for establishing the legibility model based on multiple linear regression analysis. The height of VMS characters, speed, and the number of lanes were identified as dominant factors affecting the variation of legibility distances. It is expected that the proposed model would play a significant role in designing VMS messages for providing more effective real-time traffic information.

A Study of Driver's Response to Variable Message Sign Using Evolutionary Game Theory (진화 게임을 이용한 VMS 정보에 따른 운전자의 행태 연구)

  • An objective of VMS(Variable Message Signs) is to make transportation system effective specifically for driver's path selection. The traffic solutions including a VMS problem can be modeled through Game Theory, however, the majority of the studies can not model various driver's response according to VMS information in game theory. So, this paper tries to analyze a driver's response according to VMS traffic informations through evolutionary game theory. We apply a behavior characteristics of driver to evolutionary game theory, then finds drivers are only accepting in case of the biggest pay-off, and if a traffic flow finds a balance over time, ratio of accepting information is converged as an evolutionary stable state gradually. Consequently, the strategy of the other drivers such as traffic problems can not be predicted accurately. In case, drivers repeat between groups and reasonable judgment by the experience, we expect that VMS can provide strategic information through evolutionary game theory.

  • Everyday congestion length (distance) and duration (time) data are collected and recorded in Expressway Traffic Information Center. These records are based on the information that the operators watch CCTV and decide traffic condition in order to present information about congestion on VMS. Using VMS message has some merits like that it doesn't need a great lot of cost to construct hardware such like FTMS because operators can check traffic condition by watching CCTV only. Of cause in the aspect of accuracy, using VMS message has the limitation that it is based on subject decision compared with FTMS. However, it can be said that the value of using VMS message is very large. The object of this study is to use the VMS information record (log file) usefully to provide information of traffic condition on expressway for users (drivers) without keeping the VMS information record in dead storage. To do so, in this research, congestion calculation method able to understand traffic congestion condition on expressway was developed.

  • VMS(Variable Message Sign) which makes the traffic flow smooth by providing traffic information to road users in real-time has been being installed or operated on the road as part of the detailed ITS system. However, some problems were found as a result of survey on express way currently. In the part of the phase operation, the message interpretation time wasn't defined so that the phase operation was difficult. In the part of the information service, not considering characteristic of the VMS section caused the confusion to drivers. In the part of the message exposure, font, alignment, conversion and composition of the information were not consistent and use of superfluous words and inconsistent use of word having the same meaning brought about the problem on information communication This study established the detailed exposure method based on instructions relative to VMS operation. The method established by defining the number of appropriate phase and setting required function of each individual VMS installation location. The method is as follow. the font type is the GULIM, the message conversion method is simple conversion method, the alignment method is centering alignment method and the color is defined according to each situation. In this study, the preference survey was performed to review the validity of the proposed improvement through the common driver. The results were similar with the pre-study except for the font type. This study established the detailed exposure method based on instructions relative to VMS operation. The method established by defining the number of appropriate phase and setting required function of individual VMS installation location. For the evaluation of status and improvement, preference survey of ordinary drivers and statistics analysis was carried.

  • At present, the number of local governments using the Traffic Information Center are increasing and drivers are utilizing its traffic information from VMS installed on roads in cities. However, the cases of the user's utility of VMS about urban roads with special characteristics different from expressways and urban highways haven't been evaluated so far. Because VMS is a medium installed from a budget to provide traffic information, it is necessary to evaluate and manage the efficiency of users. This study judged that the efficiency of the drivers using VMS of urban roads most influences the duty on alternative route information provision so that it established its evaluation criteria. In addition, it needs to raise its value by many drivers' observation of VMS. Therefore, in case of the same conditions, the installation location of VMS should be a road section with much traffic volume so its the evaluation criteria was established. At present, the study results can be utilized to raise the user's utility of VMS installed in the urban roads.

  • VMS which provides information about real-time traffic situation to the drivers is operating 41 places in 204km section at 2003 present time. Contrary to VMS which is constructed in freeway or highway, VMS in Roadway is increasing the demand of relocating according to development of environment. However there is not any definite standard for ITS field devices' relocating. That would be many problem such as re-relocating in the near future. This study presents optimal VMS relocating methodology using the concept of Decision Problem considering budget and number of drivers given information.

  • Variable Message Signs (VMS) is one of the major components for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) services that provides real-time traffic and incident information to drivers. The objective of this research was to develop a method determining the optimal location of VMS considering safety and driving characteristics of various drivers. A driving simulator was utilized to evaluate how drivers can safely exit to off-ramp depending on various VMS locations while information relating route diversion was provided. The binary logistic regression and factor analysis were applied in developing a probability model that predicts the success of safe off-ramp exiting. Based on the developed probability model, a method to estimate the spacing between VMS and off-ramp is suggested. It is expected that the products of this study would be utilized as a tool in determining VMS locations for ITS planners and designers.

  • Variable message sign (VMS), which is used for providing real-time information on traffic conditions and accident occurrences, is one of the important components of intelligent transportation systems. It is essential that the scheme of VMS message phase and duration should be designed with the consideration of drivers' message reading time that will be depended on various causal factors, such as the amount of VMS messages, drivers' travel speed, and geometric conditions. However, there have been not much efforts to explore the relationships between the drivers' message reading time and the above causal factors. Driving simulator experiments were conducted to obtain drivers' message reading time with respect to the amount of VMS messages, drivers' travel speed, and different geometric conditions. Regression modeling techniques were applied to develop an estimation model for drivers' message reading time. Probabilistic outcomes of the proposed model would be greatly utilized to design proper VMS message phase and duration.

  • The variable message sign (VMS) is equipment to improve the efficiency of traffic flow and safety of travel by providing real-time information to road users on traffic, road, weather situation, and traffic control due to construction. The information messages of the letter-based VMS taking up most of the VMS on the general national highways consist of section, travel time in sections, and road control situation. This study devised an improvement plan centered on road users, not road managers-centered existing message-based VMS through an analysis of road users' preference targeting the letter-based VMS operated in the general national highways in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. By presenting the measure for system improvement through which information on unexpected situations that road users prefer the most can be quickly and efficiently provided, this study aims to improve the efficiency of road user-centered VMS traffic information.
