The Viterbi decoder, which employs the maximum likelihood decoding method, is a critical component in forward error correction for digital communication system. However, lowering power consumption on the Viterbi decoder is a difficult task since the number of paths calculated equals the number of distinctive states of the decoder and the Viterbi decoder utilizes trace-back method. In this paper, we propose a method which minimizes the number of operations performed on the comparator, deployed in the SPEC-T Viterbi decoder implementation. The proposed comparator was applied to the ACSU(Add-Compare-Select Unit) and MPMSU(Minimum Path Metric Search Unit) modules on the decoder. The proposed ACS scheme and MPMS scheme shows reduced power consumption by 10.7% and 11.5% each, compared to the conventional schemes. When compared to the SPEC-T schemes, the proposed ACS and MPMS schemes show 6% and 1.5% less power consumption. In both of the above experiments, the threshold value of 26 was applied.

In this paper, we have proposed the hardware architecture which implements the algorithm for retaining the connectivity which prevents the disconnection in the gray-scale image thinning. To extract the skeleton from the image in a real time, it is necessary to examine the connectivity of the skeleton in a real time. The proposed architecture finds the connectivity number in the 4-clock period. The architecture consists of three blocks, PS(Parallel to Serial) Converter and Stare Generator and Ridge Checker. The PS Converter changes the 3$\times$3 gray level image to four sets of image pixels. The State Generator examines the connectivity of the central pixel by searching the data from the PS Converter. The Ridge Checker determines whether the central pixel is on the skeleton or not. The proposed architecture finds the connectivity of the central pixel in a 3$\times$3 gray level image in the 4-clocks. The total circuits are verified by the design tools and operate correctly.

This paper proposes a hardware architecture for an efficient SAO(Sample Adaptive Offset) with low area for HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding) encoder. SAO is a newly adopted technique in HEVC as part of the in-loop filter. SAO reduces mean sample distortion by adding offsets to reconstructed samples. The existing SAO requires a great deal of computational and processing time for UHD(Ultra High Definition) video due to sample by sample processing. To reduce SAO processing time, the proposed SAO hardware architecture processes four samples simultaneously, and is implemented with a 2-step pipelined architecture. In addition, to reduce hardware area, it has a single architecture for both luma and chroma components and also uses optimized and common operators. The proposed SAO hardware architecture is designed using Verilog HDL(Hardware Description Language), and has a total of 190k gates in TSMC $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS standard cell library. At 200MHz, it can support 4K UHD video encoding at 60fps in real time, but operates at a maximum of 250MHz.
Traditionally, Linear Shift Feedback Register (LFSR) has been widely employed to implement Cyclic Redundant Check (CRC) codes for a serial input. Since many applications including network and storage systems demand as high throughput as ever, various efforts have been made to implement CRC hardware to support parallel inputs. Among various parallel schemes, the look-ahead scheme is one of the most widely used schemes due to its short critical path. However, it is very cumbersome to design HDL codes for parallel CRC codes since the look-ahead scheme is inevitable to consider how register and input values move in the next cycles. Thus, this paper proposes a novel CRC hardware generator, which automatically produces HDL codes given a CRC polynomial and parallel factor. The experimental results verify the applicability to use the proposed generator by analyzing the synthesis results from the generated HDL code.

Wide-band sharp-transition filters are widely used in applications such as wireless CODEC design or medical systems. Since these filters suffer from large sensitivity and roundoff noise, large word-length is required for the VLSI implementation, which increases the hardware size and the power consumption of the chip. In this paper, a low-power implementation technique for digital filters with wide-band sharp-transition characteristics is proposed using CPL (Complementary Pass-Transistor Logic), LWDF (Lattice Wave Digital Filter) and a modified DIFIR (Decomposed & Interpolated FIR) algorithm. To reduce the short-circuit current component in CPL circuits due to threshold voltage reduction through the pass transistor, three different approaches can be used: cross-coupled PMOS latch, PMOS body biasing and weak PMOS latch. Of the three, the cross-coupled PMOS latch approach is the most realistic solution when the noise margin as well as the energy-delay product is considered. To optimize CPL transistor size with insight, the empirical formulas for the delay and energy consumption in the basic structure of CPL circuits were derived from the simulation results. In addition, the filter coefficients are encoded using CSD (Canonic Signed Digit) format and optimized by a coefficient quantization program. The hardware cost is minimized further by a modified DIFIR algorithm. Simulation result shows that the proposed method can achieve about 38% reductions in power consumption compared with the conventional method.
In this paper, we deal with the research about a S/PDIF (Sony Philips Digital Interface) receiver which can operate without PLL (Phase Locked Loop) circuits. Although a S/PDIF receiver is used in most audio devices and audio processors in these days. yet there are only few domestic researches about S/PDIF. Currently used commercial DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converters) which can decode S/PDIF signals, have a PLL circuit inside them. The PLL makes it possible to extract clock information from S/PDIF digital signal and to synchronize a clock signal with input signals. But the PLL circuit makes many diffculties in designing the SOC (System On Chips) of VLSIs (Vew Large Scale Integrated Ciruits) because it is an "analog circuit". We proposed a S/PDIF receiver which doesn't have PLL circuits and only has Pure digital circuits. The key idea of the proposed S/PDIF receiver. is to use the ratio between a 16 MHz basic input clock and S/PDIF signals. After having decoded hundreds thousands S/PDIF inputs, it went to prove that a S/PDIF receiver can be designed with pure digital circuits and without any analog circuits such as PLL circuits. We have confidence that the proposed S/PDIF receiver can be used as an IP (Intellectual Property) for the SOC design of the digital circuits.
In this paper, the multiple-valued adders and multipliers are implemented by current-mode CMOS. First, we implement the 3-valued T-gate and the 4-valued T-gate using current-mode CMOS which have an effective availability of integrated circuit design. Second we implement the circuits to be realized 2-variable 3-valued addition table and multiplication table over finite fields $GF(3^2)$, and 2-variable 4-valued addition table and multiplication table over finite fields $GF(4^2)$ with the multiple-valued T-gates. Finally, these operation circuits are simulated under $1.5\mutextrm{m}$ CMOS standard technology, $15\mutextrm{A}$ unit current, and 3.3V VDD voltage Spice. The simulation results have shown the satisfying current characteristics. The 3-valued adder and multiplier, and the 4-valued adder and multiplier implemented by current-mode CMOS is simple and regular for wire routing and possesses the property of modularity with cell array. Also, since it is expansible for the addition and multiplication of two polynomials in the finite field with very large m, it is suitable for VLSI implementation.
In recent years, the security of hardware and software systems is one of the most essential factor of our safe network community. As elliptic Curve Cryptosystems proposed by N. Koblitz and V. Miller independently in 1985, require fewer bits for the same security as the existing cryptosystems, for example RSA, there is a net reduction in cost size, and time. In this thesis, we propose an efficient hardware architecture of underlying field arithmetic processor for Elliptic Curve Cryptosystems, and a very useful method for implementing the architecture, especially multiplicative inverse operator over GF$GF (2^m)$ onto FPGA and futhermore VLSI, where the method is based on optimized unit operation components. We optimize the arithmetic processor for speed so that it has a resonable number of gates to implement. The proposed architecture could be applied to any finite field $F_{2m}$. According to the simulation result, though the number of gates are increased by a factor of 8.8, the multiplication speed We optimize the arithmetic processor for speed so that it has a resonable number of gates to implement. The proposed architecture could be applied to any finite field $F_{2m}$. According to the simulation result, though the number of gates are increased by a factor of 8.8, the multiplication speed and inversion speed has been improved 150 times, 480 times respectively compared with the thesis presented by Sarwono Sutikno et al. [7]. The designed underlying arithmetic processor can be also applied for implementing other crypto-processor and various finite field applications.
