  • Cable modems typically are implemented by a forward error correction(FEC) scheme. The ITU-T Recommendation J-38 Annex B specifies using 64- and 256- quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and extended RS coding scheme. In implementing the cable modem, there are some problems to fabricate and fitting on FPGA chip. First, many clocks are needed in implementing cable modem because of different code rate and different modulation types. To reduce the number of clocks, we use the two memories, which are different clock speed for reading and writing data. Second, this system lost the bit-synchronization and frame-synchronization in decoder, the system recognize that all data is error. This paper solves the problems by using simple 5-stage registers and unique sync-word. Based on solutions for about problems, the cable modem is fabricated on FPGA chip name as Vertex II pro xc2vp30-5 by Xilinx, and we confirmed the effectiveness of the results.

  • In this paper, we propose a decoding scheme that can apply to a three dimensional turbo product code(TPC) with a single parity check code(SPC). In general, SPC is used an axis with shortest code length in order to maximize a code rate of the TPC. However, SPC does not have any error correcting capability, therefore, the error correcting capability of the three-dimensional TPC results in little improvement in comparison with the two-dimensional TPC. We propose two schemes to improve performance of three dimensional TPC decoder. One is $min^*$-sum algorithm that has advantages for low complexity implementation compared to Chase-Pyndiah algorithm. The other is a modified serial iterative decoding scheme for high performance. In addition, the simulation results for the proposed scheme are shown and compared with the conventional scheme. Finally, we introduce some practical considerations for hardware implementation.

  • This paper describes FPGA implementation of a pointer interpreter which can support a synchronization of SDH(or SONET)-based transmission network. The pointer interpreter consists of a pointer-word extractor and a pointer-word interpreter The pointer-word extractor which is composed of mod-6480 counter, shift register and pointer synchronizing block, finds out the H1 and H2 pointer word from a 51.84 Mb/s AU-3/STS-1 data frame and then performs the synchronizing with a 6.48 Mb/s by dividing them in 8. Based on the extracted pointer word, pointer-word interpreter analyzes pointer states such LOP, AIS and NORM according to pointer state-transition algorithm. It consists of a majority vote, a pointer word valid/invalid check, a pointer justification, and a pointer state check. The simulation results of Xilinx Virtex XCV200PQ240 FPGA chip shows the exact pointer word extraction and correct decision of pointer status based on extracted pointer word. The proposed pointer interpreter is suitable for pointer interpretation of 155 Mb/s STM-1/STS-3 frame.

  • Present electric grids are advanced to integrate smart grids, distributed resources, high-speed sensing and control, and other advanced metering technologies. Cybersecurity is one of the challenges of the smart grid and nuclear plant digital system. It affects the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), for grid data communication and controls the information in real-time. The research article is emphasized solving the nuclear and smart grid hardware security issues with the integration of field programmable gate array (FPGA), and implementing the latest Time Authenticated Cryptographic Identity Transmission (TACIT) cryptographic algorithm in the chip. The cryptographic-based encryption and decryption approach can be used for a smart grid distribution system embedding with FPGA hardware. The chip design is carried in Xilinx ISE 14.7 and synthesized on Virtex-5 FPGA hardware. The state of the art of work is that the algorithm is implemented on FPGA hardware that provides the scalable design with different key sizes, and its integration enhances the grid hardware security and switching. It has been reported by similar state-of-the-art approaches, that the algorithm was limited in software, not implemented in a hardware chip. The main finding of the research work is that the design predicts the utilization of hardware parameters such as slices, LUTs, flip-flops, memory, input/output blocks, and timing information for Virtex-5 FPGA synthesis before the chip fabrication. The information is extracted for 8-bit to 128-bit key and grid data with initial parameters. TACIT security chip supports 400 MHz frequency for 128-bit key. The research work is an effort to provide the solution for the industries working towards embedded hardware security for the smart grid, power plants, and nuclear applications.

  • The security of personal informations has been an important issue since the field of smart card applications has been expanded explosively. The security of smart card is based on cryptographic algorithms, which are highly required to be implemented into hardware for higher speed and stronger security. In this paper, a SEED cryptographic processor is designed by employing one round key generation block which generates 16 round keys without key registers and one round function block which is used iteratively. Both the round key generation block and the F function are using only one G function block with one 5${\times}$l MUX sequentially instead of 5 G function blocks. The proposed SEED processor has been implemented such that each round operation is divided into seven sub-rounds and each sub-round is executed per clock. Functional simulation of the proposed cryptographic processor has been executed using the test vectors which are offered by Korea Information Security Agency. In addition, we have evaluated the proposed SEED processor by executing VHDL synthesis and FPGA board test. The die area of the proposed SEED processor decreases up to approximately 40% compared with the conventional processor.

  • In this paper, we proposed a parallel fast 2-D discrete wavelet transform hardware architecture based on lifting scheme. The proposed architecture improved the 2-D processing speed, and reduced internal memory buffer size. The previous lifting scheme based parallel 2-D wavelet transform architectures were consisted with row direction and column direction modules, which were pair of prediction and update filter module. In 2-D wavelet transform, column direction processing used the row direction results, which were not generated in column direction order but in row direction order, so most hardware architecture need internal buffer memory. The proposed architecture focused on the reducing of the internal memory buffer size and the total calculation time. Reducing the total calculation time, we proposed a 4-way data flow scheduling and memory based parallel hardware architecture. The 4-way data flow scheduling can increase the row direction parallel performance, and reduced the initial latency of starting of the row direction calculation. In this hardware architecture, the internal buffer memory didn't used to store the results of the row direction calculation, while it contained intermediate values of column direction calculation. This method is very effective in column direction processing, because the input data of column direction were not generated in column direction order The proposed architecture was implemented with VHDL and Altera Stratix device. The implementation results showed overall calculation time reduced from $N^2/2+\alpha$ to $N^2/4+\beta$, and internal buffer memory size reduced by around $50\%$ of previous works.

  • In this paper, we suggest an architecture of DS/CDMA tranceiver composed of one pilot channel used as reference and multiple traffic channels. The pilot channel-an unmodulated PN code-is used as the reference signal for synchronization of PN code and data demondulation. The coherent demodulation architecture is also exploited for the reverse link as well as for the forward link. Here are the characteristics of the suggested DS/CDMA system. First, we suggest an interlaced quadrature spreading(IQS) method. In this method, the PN coe for I-phase 1st channel is used for Q-phase 2nd channels and the PN code for Q-phase 1st channel is used for I-phase 2nd channel, and so on-which is quite different from the eisting spreading schemes of DS/CDMA systems, such as IS-95 digital CDMA cellular or W-CDMA for PCS. By doing IQS spreading, we can drastically reduce the zero crossing rate of the RF signals. Second, we introduce an adaptive threshold setting for the synchronization of PN code, an initial acquistion method that uses a single PN code generator and reduces the acquistion time by a half compared the existing ones, and exploit the state machines to reduce the reacquistion time Third, various kinds of functions, such as automatic frequency control(AFC), automatic level control(ALC), bit-error-rate(BER) estimator, and spectral shaping for reducing the adjacent channel interference, are introduced to improve the system performance. Fourth, we designed and implemented the DS/CDMA MODEM to be used for variable transmission rate applications-from 16Kbps to 1.024Mbps. We developed and confirmed the DS/CDMA MODEM architecture through mathematical analysis and various kind of simulations. The ASIC design was done using VHDL coding and synthesis. To cope with several different kinds of applications, we developed transmitter and receiver ASICs separately. While a single transmitter or receiver ASC contains three channels (one for the pilot and the others for the traffic channels), by combining several transmitter ASICs, we can expand the number of channels up to 64. The ASICs are now under use for implementing a line-of-sight (LOS) radio equipment.

  • It is possible but not efficient to model and simulate asynchronous microprocessors with the existing HDLs(HARDware Description Languages) such as VHDL or Verilog. The reason it that the description becomes too complex. and also the simulation time becomes too long to explore the design space. Therefore it is necessary to establish a methodology and develop a tool for modeling the handshake protocol of asynchronous microprocessors very easily and simulating it very fast. Under this objective an efficient CAD(Computer Aided Design) tool SLEDS(System Level Event-Driven Simulator) was developed which can evaluate performance of a processor through modeling with a simple description an simulating with event driven engine in the system level. The ultimate goal in the tool SLEDS is to fin the optimal conditions for a system to produce high performance by balancing the delay of each module in the system. Besides SLEDS aims at verifying the design through comparing the expected results with the actual ones by performing the defined behavior.

  • This paper presented an adaptive pipeline architecture for a high-performance and low-power asynchronous processor. The proposed pipeline architecture employed a stage-skipping and a stage-combining scheme. The stage-skipping scheme can skip the operation of a bubble stage that is not used pipeline stage in an instruction execution. In the stage-combining scheme, two consecutive stages can be joined to form one stage if the latter stage is empty. The proposed pipeline architecture could reduce the processing time and power consumption. The proposed architecture supports multi-processing in the EX stage that executes parallel 4 instructions. We designed an asynchronous microprocessor to estimate the efficiency of the proposed pipeline architecture that was synthesized to a gate level design using a $0.35-{\mu}m$ CMOS standard cell library. We evaluated the performance of the target processor using SPEC2000 benchmark programs. The proposed architecture showed about 2.3 times higher speed than the asynchronous counterpart, AMULET3i. As a result, the proposed pipeline schemes and architecture can be used for asynchronous high-speed processor design
