Extending the Single-Mode-Operation Radius of the Oxide-VCSEL by Controlling the Thickness and Position of the Oxide-Layer (Oxide층의 두께와 위치 조절을 통한 oxido-VCSEL의 단일모드 동작반경 확장)

  • We have proposed a design methodology for large active-area single-mode VCSELS, which have higher reliability and output power, and are well-suited for high-speed operation. The key idea underlying the design methodology is to reduce the effective index difference between active and cladding regions by controlling the thickness and position of the oxide layer. The idea is confirmed by the self-consistent effective index method. By placing the oxide layer position properly, we can increase the radius of the oxide aperture for single-mode operation by 3 times.

  • This paper reports on the simulation study of gigabit-capable Passive Optical networks (GPON) using WDM focused on single light source per each channel, and proposes using 1550nm VCSEL for light sources. Proposed system uses high speed direct-modulated light sources, in which the merit is able to maintain a low loss. to support broad bandwidth, and to lower network configuration cost. We conformed simulation study on the transmission of the downstream 2.5Gbit/s, upstream 1.25Gbit/s, 622Mbit/s which was recommended by ITU-T G.984.1. We measured the transmission margin and examined the feasibility of proposed system.

  • We have investigated the effect of the forward and reverse ESD pulse accumulation on the development of the oxide VCSEL's electrical and optical characteristics. The forward ESD-induced degradation is complicated, showing three degradation phases with increasing ESD voltage while the reverse ESD-induced degradation is divided by a sudden distinctive change in elecorl-optical characteristics. By comparing the measured L-I-V characteristics and their derivatives with the fitted characteristics using an equivalent circuit model as well as the large signal circuit model, the development of the oxide VCSEL's electro-optical characteristics under forward and reverse ESD conditions has been fully understood.

  • This paper reports experimental results on temporal characteristics of injection-locked polarization switching of a conventional type 1.55-${\mu}m$ wavelength single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). The polarization of external injection beam was kept orthogonal to main mode of VCSEL. The relation for variation of intensity of two polarization modes of VCSEL with wavelength detuning for various repetition rates of injection pulse is reported.

Design of Dumbbell-type CPW Transmission Lines in Optoelectric Circuit PCBs for Improving Return Loss (광전회로 PCB에서 반사특성 개선을 위한 덤벨 형태의 CPW 전송선 설계)

  • A dumbbell-type CPW transmission-line structure has been proposed to improve the return loss of the transmission line between a driver IC and flip-chip-bonding VCSEL(Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) in a hybrid opto-electric circuit board(OECB). The proposed structure used a pair of dummy ground solder balls on the ground lines for flip-chip bonding of the VCSEL and designed the dumbbell-type CPW transmission line to improve reflection characteristics. The simulated results revealed that the return loss of the dumbbell-type CPW transmission line was 13-dB lower than the conventional CPW transmission line. A 4-dB improvement in the return loss was obtained using the dummy ground solder balls on the ground lines. The variation rate of the reflection characteristic with the variation of terminal impedances of the transmission line (at the output terminal of the driver IC and the input terminal of the VCSEL) is about ${\pm}2.5\;dB$.

  • We have analyzed low current operation characteristics of a VCSEL transmitter operating at fixed Current over wide temperature range. Used 850 nm oxide VCSEL has low temperature dependence of the threshold current and $d^2I_{th}/dT^2$ is approximately $1.346\times10^{-4}mA/^{\circ}C^2$. We fixed on-current so that output power from the chip is 1 mW at $20^{\circ}C$ and investigated the turn-on, turn-off characteristics and eye-diagram of the 850 nm oxide VCSEL transmitter with varying ambient temperature and off-current. We measured rise time, fall time, extinction ratio and timing jitter by changing tile ambient temperature and off-current. With the fixed off-current of around $0.1\sim0.2mA$ lower than the lowest threshold current the transmitter successfully operated at 1.25 Gbps over a wide temperature range from $-20^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$.

  • The recent trend of information communication is to focus on improving communication services in order to satisfy the customer's desire for various information. Optical transducers of Local Area Network use 850nm or 1310nm among wavelength ranges and LD as a light source. However, Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser(VCSEL) which is very excellent to deal with data processing is used at long wavelength or Gbps. In this paper, after basic optical characteristics were introduced a optical transmission module was developed to be operated over GHz and its transmission characteristics were analyzed at 2.5GHz and 3GHz with pulse pattern generator.
