Prediction of rock slope failure using multiple ML algorithms

  • Slope stability analysis and prediction are of critical importance to geotechnical engineers, given the severe consequences associated with slope failure. This research endeavors to forecast the factor of safety (FOS) for slopes through the implementation of six distinct ML techniques, including back propagation neural networks (BPNN), feed-forward neural networks (FFNN), Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy system (TSF), gene expression programming (GEP), and least-square support vector machine (Ls-SVM). 344 slope cases were analyzed, incorporating a variety of geometric and shear strength parameters measured through the PLAXIS software alongside several loss functions to assess the models' performance. The findings demonstrated that all models produced satisfactory results, with BPNN and GEP models proving to be the most precise, achieving an R2 of 0.86 each and MAE and MAPE rates of 0.00012 and 0.00002 and 0.005 and 0.004, respectively. A Pearson correlation and residuals statistical analysis were carried out to examine the importance of each factor in the prediction, revealing that all considered geomechanical features are significantly relevant to slope stability. However, the parameters of friction angle and slope height were found to be the most and least significant, respectively. In addition, to aid in the FOS computation for engineering challenges, a graphical user interface (GUI) for the ML-based techniques was created.

  • Mobile Banking Applications (MBAPs) is one of the recent fads in mobile trading applications (Apps). MBAPs permit users to execute exchanges of money and many more whenever it might suit them; however, the primary issue for mobile banking Apps is usability. Hardly any investigation analyzes usability issues dependent on user's age, gender, exchanging accomplices, or experience. The purpose of this study is to determine the degree of usability issues, and experience of mobile banking users. The survey employs a quantitative method and performs user experiment on 240 participants with six different tasks on the application's interface. The post experiment survey is done with concerning participants. On the other hand, banking experts and Information Technology (IT) expert's group is also involved after the experiment. Expert's opinions about existing mobile banking Apps and suggestions for improving usability of MBAPs are collected through physical means (like questionnaire and interview) and online means like Google form. After that comparison of the opinions of users and experts about MBAPs is performed. The experimentation measures the tasks usability of various mobile banking apps with respect to its effectiveness, efficiency, trustfulness, learnability, memorability and satisfaction. The usability testing was led at different Universities and the outcomes acquired show that there are privacy and trust issues with their mobile banking apps. There is also a gap between users and experts which should be minimized by applying customized usability models, modes concept like other application software and also by adding complete features of banking in MBAPs. It will benefit mobile banking apps users, developers and usability engineers by providing user-friendly which are up to the mark of user's requirements.

Implementation of Hand-Gesture Interface to manipulate a 3D Object of Augmented Reality (증강현실의 3D 객체 조작을 위한 핸드-제스쳐 인터페이스 구현)

  • A hand-gesture interface to manipulate a 3D object of augmented reality is implemented by recognizing the user hand-gesture in this paper. Proposed method extracts the hand region from real image, and creates augmented object by hand marker recognized user hand-gesture. Also, 3D object manipulation corresponding to user hand-gesture is performed by analyzing a hand region ratio, a numbet of finger and a variation ratio of hand region center. In order to evaluate the performance of the our proposed method, after making a 3D object by using the OpenGL library, all processing tasks are implemented by using the Intel OpenCV library and C++ language. As a result, the proposed method showed the average 90% recognition ratio by the user command-modes successfully.

  • Purchase of clothes has recently picked up pace at mobile fashion shopping malls. One of the biggest weak points is that consumers can't coordinate clothes. Since individuals increasingly want to make coordination, a fashion coordination system to satisfy the demand should be developed. As the technology of digital clothing which is about reproducing dresses using computer graphic has been activated in the fashion industry, many changes in consumers' life patterns and interests in fashion shopping malls are taking place. Some consumers are increasingly more keenly interested in shopping on the Internet and Smart phones than in offline stores. This study was conducted to understand production of iPhone-based augmented reality fashion fitting contents which is suitable for Koreans' body shape. This system is about designing and materializing UI(User Interface), an augmented reality fitting system, so that users can confirm if they look nice with those fashion items using Smart phones. A new fashion shopping method satisfying user convenience was suggested using the materialized system.

Image-Based Approach for Modeling 3D Shapes with Curved Surfaces (곡면을 포함하는 형상의 영상을 이용한 모델링)

  • In this paper, we propose an image-based method for modeling 3D objects with curved surfaces based on the NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) representation. Starting from a few calibrated images, the user specifies the corresponding curves by means of an interactive user interface. Then, the 3D curves are reconstructed using stereo reconstruction. In order to fit the curves easily using the interactive user interface, NURBS curves and surfaces are employed. The proposed surface modeling techniques include surface building methods such as bilinear surfaces, ruled surfaces, generalized cylinders, and surfaces of revolution. In addition to these methods, we also propose various advanced surface modeling techniques, including skinned surfaces, swept surfaces, and boundary patches. Based on these surface modeling techniques, it is possible to build various types of 3D shape models with textured curved surfaces without much effort. Also, it is possible to reconstruct more realistic surfaces by using proposed view-dependent texture acquisition algorithm. Constructed 3D shape model with curves and curved surfaces can be exported in VRML format, making it possible to be used in different 3D graphics softwares.

  • A mirror is a familiar tool for human beings who have been seeing themselves through it for a long time since it was created. As evolving Digital Technology, many approaches about digital mirrors which reflect not only the light, but also the information have been studied. Traditional mirrors on the wall do not need any special control to perform their automatic visual feedbacks, reflecting lights. On the contrary, digital mirrors can actively provide more information to the user than the traditional ones. In this paper, we propose an active digital mirror system of which functions are changed according to the user-mirror distance. First of all, we investigated users' behaviors on mirrors and categorized the interactions by user-mirror distance. Based on the previous result, we designed the user interface of the mirror, and developed a prototype which has three recognition modules: a distance measuring module using infrared sensor arrays, a user recognition module by computer vision technique, and a control perception module using infrared sensor grid. In addition, the next steps for improving the user-centered digital mirror system, and the possibility for developing a mirror-shaped computer system were suggested.

  • The wearable computer that can understand the context of human life and intelligently communicate with various electronic media in ubiquitous computing environment would be very useful as an assistant for humans. In this paper we introduce an intelligent wearable assistance suite. The proposed wearable suite can interact with both humans and electronic media in ubiquitous computing environment. The developed system can sense the interactive electronic media that a user wants to use and also communicate with it. By utilizing these interaction capabilities, it intermediates between each media and the user and offers a friendlier interface to the user who wears this system. We also show the usages of the proposed system by demonstrating its interaction with the interactive electronic media in ubiquitous computing environment.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of ODA document formatter with the capability of interchange for the structured multimedia document information between heterogeneous systems. We designed the formatter generating the specific layout structure by the generic about structure and establishing relationship between specific logical/layout structure by interaction of user. For it, we proposed backtracking mechanism and processing rules of layout directive. Especially, we implemented and interactive method as user interface for ease creation of a document due to show user transparently complicated internal of structure.

A Cost-Effective Land Surveying System for Engineering Applications

  • The field of land surveying is changing dramatically due to the way data is processed, analyzed and presented. Also, there is a growing demand for digital spatial information, coming primarily from the GIS (Geographical Information System) user community. Such a demand has created a strong development potential for a new land surveying software. An overview of the development and capabilities of a land surveying software platform based on the Windows system, SurveyingMap, is presented. Among its many features, SurveyingMap provides a lot of adaptability for networks adjustment, geodetic and plane coordinates transformation, contouring, sectioning, DTM (Digital Terrain Model) generation, and large scale mapping applications. The system output is compatible with well known computer aided drafting (CAD) /GIS packages to expand its scope of applications. SurveyingMap is also suitable for non-technical users due to the user-friendly graphic user interface. The system could be used in engineering, architecture, GIS, and academic teaching and research, among other fields. Two applications of SurveyingMap, extension of field control and large scale mapping, for the case study area are established. The results demonstrate that the system is adaptable and reasonably priced for use by college and university students.

  • Achieving the beneficiary goal of recent discovery in human genome project still needs a way to retrieve and analyze the exponentially expanding bio-related information. Research on bio-related fields naturally applies knowledge discovered to the current problem and make inferences to extract new information where shared concepts and data containing information need to be defined and used in a coherent way. In such a professional domain, while the need to help users reduce their work and to improve search results has been emerged. methods for systematic retrieval and adequate exchange of relevant information are still in their infancy. The design of our system aims at improving the quality of information retrieval in a professional domain by utilizing both corpus-based and concept-based ontology. Meta-rules of helping users to make an adequate query are formed into an ontology in the domain. The integration of those knowledge permits the system to retrieve relevant information in a more semantic and systematic fashion. This work mainly describes the query models with details of GUI and a secondary query generation of the system.
