  • With increasing use of wireless mobile devices like smartphone and tablet PC, telecommunication companies have been providing the internet service by installing a multitude of access points (AP) in subway stations. Most of these APs use frequency of 2.4 GHz band range and the three telecom providers (SKT, KT, LGT) are using the limited channels within this range without any regulations. The channels within 2.4GHz band are already saturated as the companies are setting up wireless AP even within the subway trains for better service. This can affect other 2.4GHz wireless devices used for other purposes with channel interference, etc. This study has tested and analyzed the effects of the wireless APs installed within the subway stations and trains for the internet service on ZigBee-based sensor network for the intelligent surveillance system of urban transit, which is currently being developed and installed.

  • This study focused on developing strategies of cyber-compact city, combining compact city with information and communications technologies(ICTs), in order to enhance sustainable transportation. The cyber-compact city development is defined as a development that is able to reduce travel by ICTs and encourage people to use transit or non-motorized vehicles such as bicycles for ICT-induced travel (especially, discretionary travel) by compact and mixed land use. It can be achieved with combining cyber and compact strategies with respect to network, node, and area. For example, ICT network may use transit network facility, a transfer station may be a hub of ICTs, and transit influenced zone may work with ICT service area. We proposed three cohesive strategies for the cyber-compact city based on literature review and case studies on cyber and compact cities. The first strategy is a cohesion between public transportation and telecommunication network by centering on the two for national and urban spatial linkage structure. That is, cities or urban centers and its peripheral areas can be connected by rail network, and extra space of railway network can be used for constructing telecommunication network infrastructure. The second strategy is a cohesion between public transportation node and telecommunication node by building up regional and urban telecommunication centers near to or at main railway stations. For this strategy, telework centers and communication service centers should be established mainly at transfer stations. The third strategy is a cohesion between public transportation impact zone and telecommunication impact zone as transit oriented development.

  • Purpose: This study aims to find directions to improve the barrier-free (BF) certification criteria by assessing the current BF certification system, which is used as a method to improve access to passenger facilities and as a method for universal design planning, and by comparing BF certified facilities with non-BF certified facilities. Methods: This study assesses 20 BF certified facilities and 39 non-BF certified facilities, which were constructed in 2005 and onwards. The results of the assessment are compared and analyzed based on the following three categories: railway stations, urban railway stations and bus terminals. Results: The results of the analysis show that the total scores of the BF certified facilities are higher than those of the facilities that were not BF certified, indicating that the BF certification system is effective. Implication: However, there are some criteria items showing higher scores in facilities that are not BF certified than in BF certified facilities. This suggests the need to improve the BF certification criteria.

  • When operating Express and Standard trains, which run with two different scheduled time, in a single line with limited number of side tracks for overtaking standard trains, it is required to have various modeling methodologies and simulations in order to calculate an optimum headway to maximize the capacity of the line with the best scheduled time. Especially it is inevitable that following trains have to slow down or stop in the middle of their operations due to the preceding trains, in case it is inappropriate controlled about either in which station an overtaking should be taken or how long it should be. This study is to analyze TPS data which have been produced with a simulation program which the team has invented to optimize Express and Standard mixed traffic plan and to introduce an algorism which shows detected conflict data, calculates appropriate dwell time after getting overtaken and helps to decide stations for overtaking.

  • The IAQ management in subway cabin is very important for the enhancement of the amenity and health of passengers because the subway carries many passengers in a relatively short time mostly in urban area. However, since the ventilation of most subway cabins are performed by simple opening of doors at each stations, the IAQ management is not easy. In this study, we measured some IAQ factors (temperature, relative humidity, particulate matters, CO, and $CO_2$ concentration) of subway cabin in Seoul area. The results showed that the IAQ of the cabin was relatively acceptable. However, $CO_2$ concentrations were higher than 1,000 ppm in most cases. $CO_2$ concentration was mostly proportional to the number of passengers in cabin. Therefore, new method to relieve the $CO_2$ concentration is urgently required.

  • Most recognition algorithms for intelligent surveillance system are based on analysis of the video collected from one camera. Video analysis is also used to compute the internal parameters used in the recognition process. The algorithm computes only the video of the fixed area so that it is a insufficient method and it could not use information of the related areas. However, intelligent integrated surveillance system should be constructed to correlate the events in the other areas as well as in the fixed area. In this paper, in order to construct the intelligent integrated surveillance system, we describe the method not to focus on the video of each camera but to aware the whole event by sharing information between cameras, which is more accurate. The method would be used to aware the event in the fixed area such as stations in urban transit.

  • Considering that the Seoul subway sector is expected to see extension of lines, addition of stations, and changes of operating companies, a review is needed to identify ways to eliminate or minimize financial deficits in its operation. As for deficits from the operation, additional businesses for extra income have been suggested as alternatives, but inasmuch as Western urban development (that of the subway containment area) may not be applicable to Korean settings, a practical alternative is to maximize income by efficient use of rental facilities that are located inside station properties. This alternative requires the estimation of appropriate facility size and rent for each station; few, however, have addressed this topic. At this juncture, this study aimed to draw an equation for estimating the sizes and rents of station properties by reflecting characteristics of lines and locations; a case study was performed for Subway Lines 5 and 6. Analytical findings are that rental facility sizes and rental incomes are affected mainly by the subway ridership and transport revenues, whereas the influence of ground-level commercial activity is relatively weak. A particularly great influence was found to be the value of apartment housing in areas through which the subway lines run. Stations on Line 5, which runs through areas of high-value housing, were assigned smaller facility sizes and higher rents than those on Line 6, which covers areas with relatively low housing value. The equation suggested in this study would make possible more practical feasibility studies when the need arises to estimate sales of new or extended facilities affiliated with stations.

  • In this research, we were going to make the function which can forecast the operating cost of metropolitan railroad that is performing a role of assistant highway within the city. In order to do this, based on service records of subway line 1st to 8th in Seoul, we extracted 23 variables which can affect to the operating cost, and we selected the final variable for estimate the function of operating cost from correlation among variables and influence analysis. Then, we performed regression analysis by stages using final variable. 6 independent variables are chosen for presuming the operating cost, and we obtained the final 3 variables (quantity of holding motor cars, peak quantity of possessed motor cars, and quantity of stations) as a result of regression analysis. Through this research, function of operating cost of metropolitan railroad has better applicability than existing preliminary validity, and it is used by further preliminary validity investigation and master plan or validity investigation which is accompanied by operation designing, thus we expect that it could make a great contribution to the priority order of investment for metropolitan railroad or process of policy decision.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to quantitatively identify the environmental contribution generated by urban rail users in the metropolitan area. Method: As for the analysis method, the mode choice and assignment of the traffic demand analysis were repeatedly performed on the assumption that each line was not opened for the metropolitan urban railway lines 1 to 9. After that, the environmental contribution according to changes in demand for the road was analyzed. Result: The total amount of carbon dioxide emissions and benefits were found to be the largest for subway line 1. However, when considering the number of stations and length, it was analyzed that the environmental contribution was the greatest in Metro Line 4. Conclusion: Measures to promote the use of public transportation are representative of environmental improvement policies, but there is a limit in that it is difficult for actual users/non-users to feel it. Therefore, it is judged that it is necessary to quantitatively present the effect in order to improve and spread awareness of the environment.

  • Since the development of railway technology, the current urban Railway the first train line in the country for safe operation control automatic/unattended operation, automatic train operation equipment available (ATO) on time and reliable operation has introduced. ATO Automatic operation controlled by the value (Target velocity) and the feedback value (Actual velocity) by the error between the backing and braking of the train by repeated low energy efficiency. In this paper, given a fixed distance stations between time operation with minimal energy in the driving characteristics and driving trains are modeled. Therefore, in line 5 real route time sectional drive straight sections for experimental data analysis / draft Section / curved and section of the train on that line is selected according to the changing driving patterns to minimize the energy optimal driving patterns were presented.
