  • A handful of previous studies have attempted to integrate socioeconomic data and remotely sensed data for urban quality of life assessment with their spatial dimension in a zonal unit. However, such a zone-based approach not only has the unrealistic assumption that all attributes of a zone are uniformly spatially distributed throughout the zone, but also has resulted in serious methodological difficulties such as the modifiable areal unit problem and the incompatibility problem with environmental data. An alternative to the zone-based approach can be a pixel-based approach which gets its spatial dimension through a pixel. This paper proposes a pixel-based approach to linking remotely sensed data with socioeconomic data in GIS for urban quality of life assessment. The pixel-based approach uses dasymetric mapping and spatial interpolation to spatially disaggregate socioeconomic data and integrates remotely sensed data with spatially disaggregated socioeconomic data for the quality of life assessment. This approach was implemented and compared with a zone-based approach using a case study of Fulton County, Georgia. Results indicate that the pixel-based approach allows for the calculation of a microscale indicator in the urban quality of life assessment and facilitates efficient data integration and visualization in the assessment although it costs an intermediate step with more processing time such as the disaggregation of zonal data. The results also demonstrate that the pixel-based approach opens up the potential for the development of new database and increased analytical capabilities in urban analysis.

  • Average speed denotes a travel speed based on the average travel time of vehicles to traverse a segment of roadway, and average travel speed is used as a measure of effectiveness (MOE) suggested in the highway capacity manual (HCM) for evaluating the level of service (LOS) of roadway. Most of the urban freeways in our country are having congestion problem regardless of the rush hours as a high-speed highway with a speed limit of 80km/h or less. Especially traffic congestion within the ramp junction areas is becoming worse by the increased traffic and lack of links with the arterials around the urban freeway. So, the purpose in this study is to identify the traffic characteristics within the ramp junction areas of urban freeway, predict the average speed within the ramp junction areas based on the traffic characteristics identified, and finally prove the validity of the average speed predicted.

  • For the calibration of rainfall-runoff model, automatic calibration methods are used instead of manual calibration to obtain the reliable modeling results. When mathematical programming techniques such as linear programming and nonlinear programming are applied, there is a possibility to arrive at the local optimum. To solve this problem, genetic algorithm is introduced in this study. It is very simple and easy to understand but also applicable to any complicated mathematical problem, and it can find out the global optimum solution effectively. The objective of this study is to develope a parameter optimization program that integrate a genetic algorithm and a rainfall-runoff model. The program can calibrate the various parameters related to the runoff process automatically. As a rainfall-runoff model, SWMM is applied. The automatic calibration program developed in this study is applied to the Jangcheon watershed flowing into the Youngrang Lake that is in the eutrophic state. Runoff surveys were carried out for two storm events on the Jangcheon watershed. The peak flow and runoff volume estimated by the calibrated model with the survey data shows good agreement with the observed values.

  • Urban sprawl has been the limits of traffic accommodate and the supply road. Thus, Light Rail Transit(LRT) has been proposed as the best alternative. Owing to landscape damage from construction of LRT, landscape planning should be considered seriously in the urban planning step. This paper therefore seeks to determine landscape improvement direction of LRT pier. First, the methods in this study shared landscape improvement direction type of LRT pier through previous studies such as planting of surface(30%, 60%, 90% planting of surface), graphic(character, commercial advertising, symbol), and surface treatment type(exposed concrete, white painting, pattern dies). Next, respondent evaluated 3D simulated landscape image accordingly shared types by preference and landscape adjectives using in streetscape evaluation. As a result, visual preference was the highest in planting type of surface and the lowest in the surface treatment type. Covering 60%(4.48) in planting type of surface was the highest. Because it is similar to the golden ratio considering the visual principle, we will need to take advantage through the result of this paper. Also, most landscape improvement direction which satisfied with significant level showed a positive effect from landscape improvement. Comprehensively based on these results, it suggests desirable landscape improvement direction of LRT pier in the city for solution of landscape inhibition problem.

  • The objectives of this study are to deduce a problem of existing subcatchment width equation in Storm Water Management Model(SWMM) and to analyze the suitability of a new adjusted subcatchment width equation on both ideally assumed watersheds and an actual urban watershed area. The problems of existing subcatchment equation are issued on the theoretical review of the equation and from the model application on different types of simplified assumed watershed. The adjusted equation, proposed in this study, that considers the pipe flows in addition to the surface flows on small subcatchment can improve the limitation of existing equation when applied on the assumed watersheds. Also, Gunja watershed with 96.3 ha is selected and collected rainfall-runoff events for the feasibility study of the proposed equation on actual urban watershed area. The results represent that the simulated flows from adjusted equation rather than the simulated flows from existing equation are well agreed with observed ones.

  • Stormwater pollution is a major problem in urban areas. Pollutants like heavy metals and harmful chemicals in the runoff can endanger soil and ground water, when they are not sufficiently removed doting infiltration. Strength and infiltration capacity of porous concrete are the major problems that must be considered if permeable pavement system are demanded to be used in a drive way application. In this study, a series of compacted porous concrete mixtures and the system of pavement ate tested for the physical characteristics like compressive strength, flexural strength, unit weight, porosity, water permeability, and the purification capacity of contaminated water. The test results obtained indicate that the strength and infiltration capacity of porous concrete are strongly related to its matrix proportion and compaction energy and providing adequate filter layers underneath pavement surface course is one of the most important design considerations of permeable pavement system for pollution retention purpose.

  • Arid areas have a significant problem with water supply due to climate change and high water demand. More than 3,000 years ago, Persians started constructing elaborate tunnel systems called Qanat for extracting groundwater for agriculture and domestic usages in arid and semi-arid areas and dry deserts. In this paper, it has been demonstrated that ancient methods of water management, such as the Qanat system, could provide a good example of human wisdom to battle with water scarcity in a sustainable manner. The purpose of this paper is twofold: Review of old wisdom of Qanat-to review the history of this ancient wisdom from the beginning until now and study the Qanat condition at the present time and to explore why (notwithstanding that there are significant advantages to the Qanat system), it will no longer be used; and suggestions for future water management-to suggest a number of new methods based on new materials and technology to refine and protect Qanats. With these new suggestions it could be possible to refine and reclaim this method of extracting water in arid areas. Also, a new multi-purpose water management model has been introduced based on rainwater infiltration management over the Qanat system as the model can be applied either in dry or wet cities to solve current urban water problems.

  • This research is concerned with a comparative cognition of environmental issues in the countryside between socio-cultural groups. Environmental issues have been con연nod to litter, soil, sewage, wild life, noise, landscape, air, housing development, waste land and pesticides. Socio-cultural groups consisted of urban and countryside people who live in Korea and UK. The method of this study depended upon a standard questionnaire with a semantic scale. The cognition of Korean and British people are significantly different in every respect(p =.0001)except air issues. There is a significant similarity between Korean groups in 10 environmental issues(p > .03). Both Korean groups have generally recognized that their countryside environment has faced serious problems to be solved while British groups have not recognized serious problems in their countryside compared to the Korean groups. To both Korean and British groups the most worrying amongst the 10 environmental issues is the litter problem. In particular, there is a significant difference between British groups in soils(p = .0001), wildlife(p = .0009), air(p = .0001) and waste land(p = .0027). The existing policies (or countryside environment in Korea should be completely reconsidered and in Britain policies towards soils, wild life, air and waste land need to be reviewed. From the results it can be seen that cognition to countryside environment undergoes more cultural influences rather than social ones.
