  • An unmanned aerial photography method by using an unmanned helicopter is useful method for measuring of the water-entry traces of small falling objects into the sea. Pixel sizes on the aerial photograph may be too large due to a limit of camcorder resolution and a wide shooting area. If the pixel size is too large, identification of water-entry trace is impossible. Thus an accurate prediction of water-entry trace size is required. The traces of water-entry could be classified into three types such as splash, water column, and bubble. Diameters of each trace are predicted by water-entry impact pressure theories, cavity theories, and trial test results. The results are verified by drop tests using an unmanned helicopter at two water-entry speeds. As a result, prediction and test results showed sufficient similarity to evaluate the identifiability of water-entry trace.

  • This paper covers research on terrain construction for unmanned aerial vehicle simulators using spatial information that was distributed by public institutions. Aerial photography, DEM, vector maps and 3D model data were used in order to create a realistic terrain simulator. A data converting method was suggested while researching, so it was generated to automatically arrange and build city models (vWorld provided) and classification methods so that realistic images could be generated by 3D objects. For example: rivers, forests, roads, fields and so on, were arranged by aerial photographs, vector map (land cover map) and terrain construction based on the tile map used by DEM. In order to verify the terrain data of unmanned aircraft simulators produced by the proposed method, the location accuracy was verified by mounting onto Unreal Engine and checked location accuracy.

  • Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, drones) are becoming increasingly useful in a variety of fields. Advances in UAV and camera technology have made it possible to equip them with ultra-high resolution sensors and capture images at low altitudes, which has improved the reliability and classification accuracy of object identification on the ground. The distinctive contribution of this study is the derivation of sensor-specific performance metrics (GRD/GSD), which shows that as the GSD increases with altitude, the GRD value also increases. In this study, we identified the characteristics of various onboard sensors and analysed the image quality (discrimination resolution) of aerial photography results using UAVs, and calculated the shooting conditions to obtain the discrimination resolution required for reading ground objects.

  • As the unmanned aerial vehicle industry and its related technologies grow each year, the number of abuse cases caused by drones is increasing. In addition to the invasion of privacy caused by indiscriminate photography, terrorism using unmanned aerial vehicles, which have a low detection probability, high location accuracy, and the capability of targeting people or places, as well as carrying chemicals, radiation materials, and small bombs, is becoming a significant problem around the world. Accordingly, many companies are developing anti-drone solutions that consist of various technologies such as radar, EO/IR cameras, and RF jammers to detect and disable unmanned aerial vehicles. This article briefly introduces the recent R&D trends and technical levels of anti-drone technologies.

  • Multi-rotor type UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle)s are expanding their applications not only for military purposes but also for private industries such as aerial photography and unmanned delivery vehicles. For wider use of unmanned aerial vehicles, studies should be carried out to improve aerodynamic efficiency and reduce noise of propellers, which can be achieved based on techniques of predicting aerodynamic performance and noise in a given environment. In this study, aerodynamic and noise prediction techniques were developed for a small unmanned aerial vehicle propeller, and it was verified by comparing it with actual measurement results. Thrust and torque due to the change of r/min and the frequency spectral prediction at a given position secured the reliability of the prediction method, which provides a basis for the shape design of the propeller.

  • In this study, the practicality of unmanned aerial vehicle photography information was identified. Therefore, a total of four consecutive surveys were conducted on the field-level survey areas among the areas subject to photography using unmanned aerial vehicles, and the changes in crop conditions were analyzed using pictures of unmanned aerial vehicles taken during each survey. It is appropriate to collect and utilize photographic information by directly taking pictures of the survey area according to the time of the on-site survey using unmanned aerial vehicles in the field layer, which is an area where many changes in topography, crop vegetation, and crop types are expected. And it turned out that it was appropriate to utilize satellite images in consideration of economic and efficient aspects in relatively unchanged rice paddies and facilities. If the survey area is well equipped with systems for crop cultivation, deep learning can be utilized in real time by utilizing libraries after obtaining photographic data for a certain area using unmanned aircraft in the future. Through this process, it is believed that it can be used to analyze the overall crop and shipment volume by identifying the crop status and surveying the quantity per unit area.

  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has several advantages over conventional remote sensing techniques. They can acquire high-resolution images quickly and repeatedly. And with a comparatively lower flight altitude, they can obtain good quality images even in cloudy weather. In this paper, we discussed the state-of-the-art of the domestic and international use of UAV in agricultural sector as well as assessed its utilization and applicability for agricultural environment in Korea. Association of robotic, computer vision and geomatic technologies have established a new paradigm of low-altitude aerial remote sensing that has now been receiving attention from researchers all over the world. In a field study, it has been found that use of UAV imagery in an agricultural subsidy program can reduce the farmers' complain and provide objective evidence. UAV high resolution photography can also be helpful in monitoring the disposal zone for animal carcasses. Due to its expeditiousness and accuracy, UAV imagery can be a very useful tool to evaluate the damage in case of an agricultural disaster for both parties insurance companies and the farmers. Also high spatial and temporal resolution in UAV system can increase the prediction accuracy which in turn help to maintain the agricultural supply and demand chain.

  • This study proposed detection method of Marine debris using unmanned aerial photography. For unmanned aerial photography, a RC(Radio Control) helicopter which has good movability and economics was used. To a camera mounting, a gimbal equipment was attached to the bottom of the RC helicopter. The gimbal equipment is very useful because it is not seriously affected by vibration and rolling. In addition, we invented that digital image processing algorithm using Matlab program for detection of marine debris from photographs. Particularly, background subtraction in invented algorithm was applied. As a result, marine debris of a variety of forms from different sand states of coast were reliably detected. In the future, monitoring using proposed method was expected to contribute that the solution to representative problem of monitoring area selecting and estimate the total litter mass over the beach. Moreover, It is considered a greater application possibility to marine environmental observations.

  • Recently, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is increasing in the field of land information acquisition and terrain exploration through high-altitude aerial photography. High-altitude aerial photography is suitable for large-scale geographic information collection, but has the disadvantage that it is difficult to accurately collect small-scale geographic information. Therefore, this study used low-altitude UAV to monitor changes in small rural spaces around rural resources, and the results are as follows. First, the low-altitude aerial imagery had a very high spatial resolution, so it was effective in reading and analyzing topographic features. Second, an area with a large number of aerial images and a complex topography had a large amount of point clouds to be extracted, and the number of point clouds affects the three-dimensional quality of rural space. Third, 3D mapping technology using point cloud is effective for monitoring rural space and rural resources because it enables observation and comparison of parts that cannot be read from general aerial images. In this study, the possibility of rural space analysis of low-altitude UAV was verified through aerial photography and analysis, and the effect of 3D mapping on rural space monitoring was visually analyzed. If data acquired by low-altitude UAV are used in various forms such as GIS analysis and topographic map production it is expected to be used as basic data for rural planning to maintain and preserve the rural environment.
