In this paper, we generalize some results about Bertrand curves and Razzaboni surfaces in Euclidean 3-space to the case that the ambient space is Minkowski 3-space. Our discussion is divided into three different cases, i.e., the parent Bertrand curve being timelike, spacelike with timelike principal normal, and spacelike with spacelike principal normal. For each case, first we show that Razzaboni surfaces and their mates are related by a reciprocal transformation; then we give B$\ddot{a}$cklund transformations for Bertrand curves and for Razzaboni surfaces; finally we prove that the reciprocal and B$\ddot{a}$cklund transformations on Razzaboni surfaces commute.
In this paper, we characterize the conformal transformations between two almost regular (${\alpha},{\beta}$)-metrics. Suppose that F is a non-Riemannian (${\alpha},{\beta}$)-metric and is conformally related to ${\widetilde{F}}$, that is, ${\widetilde{F}}=e^{{\kappa}(x)}F$, where ${\kappa}:={\kappa}(x)$ is a scalar function on the manifold. We obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions of the conformal transformation between F and ${\widetilde{F}}$ preserving the mean Landsberg curvature. Further, when both F and ${\widetilde{F}}$ are regular, the conformal transformation between F and ${\widetilde{F}}$ preserving the mean Landsberg curvature must be a homothety.
Shape memory alloy (SMA) helical springs have found a large number of different applications in industries including biomedical devices and actuators. According to the application of SMA springs in different actuators, they are usually under tension and torsion loadings. The ability of SMAs in recovering inelastic strains is due to martensitic phase transformation between austenite and martensite phases. Stress or temperature induced martensite transformation induced of SMAs is a remarkable property which makes SMA springs more superior in comparison with traditional springs. The present paper deals with the simulation of SMA helical spring at room temperature. Three-dimensional phenomenological constitutive model is used to describe superelastic behavior of helical spring. This constitutive model is implemented as a user subroutine through ABAQUS STANDARD (UMAT), and the process of the implementation is presented. Numerical results show that the developed constitutive model provides an appropriate approach to captures the general behavior of SMA helical springs.
Transformation behavior and superelastic behavior of Ti-Ni-Cu alloys with various Cu content has been investigated by means of electrical resistivity measurement, X-ray diffraction, tensile test and transmission electron microscopy. Two types of heat treatment are given to the specimens: i) Solutions treatment. ii) thermo-mechanical treatment. The transformation sequence in solution treated Ti-Ni-Cu Alloys substituted by Cu for Ni up to 5at.% occurs to $B2{\rightleftarrows}B19^{\prime}$ and it proceeds in two stages by addition of 10at.%Cu, i. e, $B2{\rightleftarrows}B19{\rightleftarrows}B19^{\prime}$. Also, it has been found that Ti-30Ni-20Cu alloy transformed in one stage : $B2{\rightleftarrows}B19$. The thermo-mechanically treated Ti-47Ni-3Cu alloy transformed in two stages: B2${\rightleftarrows}$rhomboheral phase${\rightleftarrows}B19^{\prime}$, while transformation sequence in Ti-45Ni-5Cu and Ti-40Ni-10Cu alloy transformed as same as solution treated specimens. The critical stress for inducing slip deformation in solution treated and thermo-mechanically treated Ti-40Ni-10Cu alloy is about 90MPa and 320Mpa respectively.
Better fundamental understanding of the interactions between the in-cylinder flows and combustion process is an important requirement for further improvement in the fuel economy and emissions of internal combustion(IC) engines. Flow near a spark plug at the time of ignition plays an important role for early flame kernel development(EFKD). Velocity data measurements in this study were made with a two-component laser Doppler velocimetry(LDV) near a spark plug in a single cylinder optical spark ignition(SI) engine with a heart-shaped combustion chamber. LDV velocity data were collected on an individual cycle basis under wide-open motored conditions with an engine speed of 1,000rpm. This study examines and compares the flow fields as interpreted through ensemble, cyclic and discrete wavelet transformation(DWT) analysis. The energy distributions in the non-stationary engine flows are also investigated over crank angle phase and frequency through continuous wavelet transformation(CWT) for a position near a spark plug. Wavelet analysis is appropriate for analyzing the flow fields in engines because it gives information about the transient events in a time and frequency plane. The results of CWT analysis are provided and compared with the mean flows of DWT first decomposition level for all cycles at a position. Low frequency high energy found with CWT corresponds well with the peak locations of the mean velocity. The high frequency flows caused by the intake jet gradually decay as the piston approaches the bottom dead center(BDC).
Dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs), the most abundant galaxy type in clusters, were recently shown to exhibit a wide variety in their properties. Particularly, the presence of blue cores in some dEs, what we call dE(bc), supports the scenario of late-type galaxy infall and subsequent transformation into red, quiescent dEs. While several transformation mechanisms for these dE(bc)s within cluster environment have been proposed, all these processes are able to explain only some of the observational properties of dEs. In this context, internal kinematic properties of dE(bc)s provide the most crucial evidence to discriminate different processes for the formation of these galaxies. We present Gemini Multi Object Spectrograph (GMOS) long-slit spectroscopy of two dE(bc)s in the Virgo cluster. We obtained radial profiles of velocity and velocity dispersion out to ~1.3 effective radius. We found that two dE(bc)s exhibit kinematically decoupled components as well as distinct peculiar features in velocity profiles, supporting the scenario of mergers. We also found that these galaxies are structurally compatible with low surface brightness component of blue compact dwarf galaxies. We suggest that a part of dE(bc)s in the Virgo Cluster were formed through galaxy merger in low density environment such as galaxy group or outskirt of the cluster, and then were quenched by subsequent effects within cluster environment.
Pseudomonas fluorescens which is able to utilize malonate as a sole carbon source was found to contain a novel 60 kb plasmid, which encodes the genes for the proteins to assimilate malonate, including malonate decarboxylase and acetyl-CoA synthetase. The evidence is as follows: The Pseudomonas cured with mitomycin C was unable to grow on malonate-medium as well as it lost plasmid. The plasmid isolated from the Pseudomonas could be introduced into E. coli strain JM103 and DH1 by transformation. The transformed E. coli was able to grow on malonate-medium and could transmit its plasmid back to the cured P. fluorescens by conjugation. The existence of the plasmid in the transformed E. coli was confirmed by hybridization with a labeled probe prepared from 12 kb segment of the plasmid. Dot hybridization showed that the copy number of the plasmid in the transformed E. coli is at least 13 times higher than in the wild type P. fluorescens. The two key enzymes, malonate decarboxylase and acetyl-CoA synthetase, were inducible by malonate in the transformed E. coli.
This study screened three natural ores (iron, mangenase, and zinc), two types of slags, and two elemental metals (elemental iron and zinc) to evaluate transformation characteristics of CAH mixtures [e.g. Carbontetrachloride (CT), 1,1,1-Trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA), and Perchloroethene (PCE)]. To select an effective metal medium to treat the CAH mixtures, we measured transformation capacities (CAH mass ultimately transformed/mass of metal added) and the degree of dechlorination. We also considered economical efficiency of the metal media by comparing the value, CAH mass ultimately transformed divided by the price of metal medium added. A simplified mathematical model adapting CAH transformation capacity, first-order transformation kinetics, and available mass of metal transforming CAH was developed and used for estimating CAH transformation rate coefficient and longevity of the metal medium. CAH transformation capacity for elemental iron and elemental zinc were 4258~7129 and $4215{\sim}6330{\mu}g\;CAH\;transformed/g$ metal added, respectively, which are a factor of 80~200 higher than slags and natural ores. They also showed a factor of 1.1 to 2.2 greater degree of dechlorination than the others. Among natural ores and slags, Zinc ore showed the highest transformation capacity, $47{\sim}53{\mu}g\;CAH\;transformed/g$ metal added. Although zinc ore have smaller transformation capacity than elemental metals, economical efficiency of zinc ore is a factor of 10~20 greater than elemental metals tested. Consequently, zinc ore would be more economical medium than the others tested in this study. We estimated the pseudo first-order transformation rate of zinc ore was in the order of CT > 1,1,1-TCA > PCE.

Objectives: Papilloma frequently develops as a benign tumor of the head and neck area, but its potential for malignant transformation has yet to be studied. This study aims to provide basic information for papillomas using the immunohistochemical staining of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and human papilloma virus (HPV) 16 and 18. Materials and Methods: To evaluate the malignant transformation of papillomas, the selected tissue samples were serially diagnosed with pre-cancerous papilloma (with epithelial dysplasia, pseudo-epitheliomatous hyperplasia) or malignant lesion (squamous cell carcinoma, SCC) after the first diagnosis (squamous papilloma, inverted papilloma). The selected tissues were stained with an antibody to MMP-2 and HPV 16-E7, HPV 18-L1. A statistical analysis was performed according to each transformation step. Results: The epithelial layer of papilloma and pre-cancerous papilloma lesions had a similar MMP-2 expression, but that of the malignant lesion had a significantly increased MMP-2 expression. HPV 16 and 18 infection rates were 28.6%, 33.3% and 63.6% in papillomas, pre-cancerous papilloma lesions, and SCC. Conclusions: A relatively high MMP-2 expression and HPV 16 or 18 infection of papillomas may be associated with early events in the multistep processes of malignant transformation of papillomas.
It has been proposed that the mode of action of nisin against vegetative cells and spores of Clostridium botulinum is different. However, clear explanation is not available. Therefore, nisin action against vegetative cells and spores of C. botulinum was investigated in this study. Nisin was added at various stages of spore-to-vegetative cell transition and changes to sensitivity to the bacteriocin were observed. Different nisin preparation (Nisaplin or pure nisin) was compared for their activity against different stages of spore transformation of C. botulinum ATCC 25763. Germination was measured by determining loss of heat resistance and observing phase darkening of spores under phase-contrast microscope. Nisin acted bactericidally against vegetative cells, but acted sporostatically against spores of C. botulinum under the same concentration. This bactericidal and sporostatic action of nisin was dependent on the concentration of nisin used. Presence of nisin during spore activation by heat increased subsequent phase darkening and germination rates. However, nisin inhibited the germination and the outgrowth, when it was added after heat activation stage. Findings from this study suggest that the time of addition of nisin is very important for the effective control of spores during the heating process of foods. In addition, it may be possible to apply nisin at the stage of processing that coincides with the most sensitive stage of spore transformation.
