  • In this paper, free vibration characteristics of a rotating double tapered functionally graded beam is investigated. Material properties of the beam vary continuously through thickness direction according to the power-law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. The governing differential equations of motion are derived using the Hamilton's principle and solved utilizing an efficient and semi-analytical technique called the Differential Transform Method (DTM). Several important aspects such as taper ratios, rotational speed, hub radius, as well as the material volume fraction index which have impacts on natural frequencies of such beams are investigated and discussed in detail. Numerical results are tabulated in several tables and figures. In order to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the current analysis, some of present results are compared with previous results in the literature and an excellent agreement is observed. It is showed that the natural frequencies of an FG rotating double tapered beam can be obtained with high accuracy by using DTM. It is also observed that nondimensional rotational speed, height taper ratio, power-law exponent significantly affect the natural frequencies of the FG double tapered beam while the effects of hub radius and breadth taper ratio are negligible.

  • In this work, limit elastic speed analysis of functionally graded porous rotating disks has been reported. The work proposes an effective approach for modeling the mechanical properties of a porous functionally graded rotating disk. Four different types of porosity models namely: uniform, symmetric, inner maximum, and outer maximum distribution are considered. The approach used is the variational principle, and the solution has been achieved using Galerkin's error minimization theory. The study aims to investigate the effect of grading indices, aspect ratio, porosity volume fraction, and porosity types on limit angular speed for uniform and variable disk geometries of constant mass. To validate the current study, finite element analysis has been used, and there is good agreement between the two methods. The study yielded a decrease in limit speed as grading indices and aspect ratio increase. The porosity volume fraction is found to be more significant than the aspect ratio effect. The research demonstrates a range of operable speeds for porous and non-porous disk profiles that can be used in industries as design data. The results show a significant increase in limit speed for an exponential disk when compared to other disk profiles, and thus, the study demonstrates a range of FG-based structures for applications in industries that will not only save material (lightweight structures) but also improve overall performance.

  • High electric field stressed trap distributions were investigated in the thin silicon oxide of polycrystalline silicon gate metal oxide semiconductor capacitors. The transient currents associated with the off time of stressed voltage were used to measure the density and distribution of high voltage stress induced traps. The transient currents were due to the discharging of traps generated by high stress voltage in the silicon oxides. The trap distributions were relatively uniform near both cathode and anode interface in polycrystalline silicon gate metal oxide semiconductor devices. The stress generated trap distributions were relatively uniform the order of $10^{11}$~$10^{12}$ [states/eV/$\textrm{cm}^2$] after a stress. The trap densities at the oxide silicon interface after high stress voltages were in the $10^{10}$~$10^{13}$ [states/eV/$\textrm{cm}^2$]. It was appeared that the transient current that flowed when the stress voltages were applied to the oxide was caused by carriers tunneling through the silicon oxide by the high voltage stress generated traps.

  • In this paper, a novel methodology is proposed to obtain optimum location of outriggers. The method utilizes genetic algorithm (GA) for shape and size optimization of outrigger-braced tall structures. In spite of previous studies (simplified methods), current study is based on exact modeling of the structure in a computer program developed on Matlab in conjunction with OpenSees. In addition to that, exact wind loading distribution is calculated in accordance with ASCE 7-10. This is novel since in previous studies wind loading distributions were assumed to be uniform or triangular. Also, a new penalty coefficient is proposed which is suitable for optimization of tall buildings. Newly proposed penalty coefficient improves the performance of GA and results in a faster convergence. Optimum location and number of outriggers is investigated. Also, contribution of factors like central core and outrigger rigidity is assessed by analyzing several design examples. According to the results of analysis, exact wind load distribution and modeling of all structural elements, yields optimum designs which are in contrast of simplified methods results. For taller frames significant increase of wind pressure changes the optimum location of outriggers obtained by simplified methods. Ratio of optimum location to the height of the structure for minimizing weight and satisfying serviceability constraints is not a fixed value. Ratio highly depends on height of the structure, core and outriggers stiffness and lateral wind loading distribution.

  • The stabilization characteristics of diffusion flame formed in the wake of a cylindrical flame holder were investigated. Distribution of turbulence intensity, concentration distribution of combustion gas, and ion currents were measured. The turbulence intensity in the wake of cylindrical- game holder is increased with increase of diameter or blockage ratio of grid. If the auxiliary fuel is injected into recirculation zone, the concentration of $C_3H_8$ is high, but the concentration of $CO_2$ is low at the boundary of recirculation zone. The region with highest average value of ion currents in the middle of flame is moved to the upstream side by the turbulent components of main stream. The flame mass with partially active reaction is moved fast for uniform flow and turbulence generator G3, but the flame mass with relatively slow reaction is moved slowly for turbulence generator G1.

  • In recent years there have been considerable attentions on nanoimprint lithography (NIL) by the display device and semiconductor industry due to its potential abilities that enable cost-effective and high-throughput nanofabrication. Although one of the current major research trends of NIL is large-area patterning, the technical difficulties to keep the uniformity of the residual layer become severer as the imprinting area increases more and more. In this paper we consider the roll-to-plate type imprinting process. In the process a glass mold, which is placed upon the 2nd generation TFT-LCD glass sized substrate(370${\yen}$470 mm), is rolled by a rubber roller to achieve a uniform residual layer. The pressure distribution on the glass mold by rolling of the rubber roller is crucial information to analyze mold deformation, transferred pattern quality, uniformity of residual layer and so forth. In this paper the quantitative pressure distribution induced by rolling of the rubber roller was calculated with finite element analysis under the assumption of Neo-Hookean hyperelastic constitutive relation. Additionally the numerical results were verified by the experiments.

  • Reduced beam section (RBS) moment connections used in special moment resisting frames are currently limited to beam sections that are not larger than nominal depths of 920 mm, weight of 447 kg/m and flange thickness of 44 mm. Due to the higher demand for structural components with jumbo sections, which can potentially be applied in the transfer girders in long-span building structures, the newly available steel heavy members are promising. To address this issue, advanced numerical models are developed to fully evaluate the distribution of stresses and concentrations of plastic strains for such jumbo RBS connections. This paper first presents a brief overview of an experimental study on four specimens with large beam and column sections. Then, a numerical model that includes initial imperfections, residual stresses, geometric nonlinearity, and explicitly modeled welds is presented. The model is used to further explore the behavior of the test specimens, including distribution of stresses, distribution of plastic strains, stress triaxiality and potential for fracture. The results reveal that the stresses are highly non-uniform across the beam flange and, similarly, the plastic strains concentrate at the extreme fiber of the bottom flange. However, neither of these phenomena, which are primarily a function of beam flange thickness, is reflected in current design procedures.

  • To observe the superconducting current and structural properties of high critical temperature ($T_c$) superconductors (HTS), we suggest the following imaging methods: Room temperature imaging (RTI) through thermal heating, low-temperature bolometric microscopy (LTBM) and Raman scattering imaging. RTI and LTBM images visualize thermal-electric voltages as different thermal gradients at room temperature (RT) and superconducting current dissipation at near-$T_c$, respectively. Using RTI, we can obtain structural information about the surface uniformity and positions of impurities. LTBM images show the flux flow in two dimensions as a function of the local critical currents. Raman imaging is transformed from Raman survey spectra in particular areas, and the Raman vibration modes can be combined. Raman imaging can quantify the vibration modes of the areas. Therefore, we demonstrate the spatial transport properties of superconducting materials by combining the results. In addition, this enables visualization of the effect of current flow on the distribution of impurities in a uniform superconducting crystalline material. These imaging methods facilitate direct examination of the local properties of superconducting materials and wires.

  • Water management has been recognized as a crucial factor for achieving better performance and stability in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Proper water management should provide favorable water conditions, including the local humidity, membrane water content, and liquid water saturation in PEMFCs, thereby leading to more uniform electrochemical reaction and current generation. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was conducted to investigate the effects of the cathode relative humidity (RH) on the performance of a 3 by $3\;cm^2$ PEMFC with serpentine flow fields. The CFD results showed that the best performance of the PEMFC was obtained for the cathode RH of 80%, but the performance variation was small for the cathode RH range of $60{\sim}100%$. However, the loss of the PEMFC performance was significant when the cathode RH was reduced below 40%. The reason for such performance variation was investigated through the detailed inspection of ohmic loss, activation and concentration overpotential, and water and current distributions.
