The solid particle erosion behaviour of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites was investigated. The erosive wear of these composites was evaluated at different impingement angles ($30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$), different impact velocities (40, 55, 60, 70m/s) and at three different fiber orientations ($0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$). The erodent was SiC sand with the size $50-100{\mu}m$ of irregula. shapes. The result showed ductile erosion behaviour with maximum erosion rate at $30^{\circ}$ impingement angle. The fiber orientations had a significant influence on erosion. The erosion rate was strongly dependent on impact velocity which followed power law $E{\propto}\;V^n$. Based on impact velocity (V), impact angle (${\alpha}$) and fiber orientation angle (${\beta}$), a method was proposed to predict the erosion rate of unidirectional fiber reinforced composites.

Carbon-fiber which has very small radial dimension makes us difficult to measure it's properties. So in this paper, we suggest a simple method to measure the thermal conductivity of a carbon-fiber's and carbon-fiber-reinforced-plastics(CFRP) laminates. The thermal conductivity of CFRP laminates was measured experimentally at the same time analytically. The experimental model is based on the one-dimensional analysis of fin sample because CFRP laminates has a thin geometric configuration. The analytical model to measure the thermal conductivity of carbon-fiber is expressed by use of mean-field model which is based on Eshelby's elliptical inclusion problem. Therefore the thermal conductivity of angle-ply laminates can be computed by use of effective longitudinal and transverse thermal conductivities of unidirectional composite of the constituents.

The guided wave technique is commonly used in structural health monitoring as the guided waves can propagate far in the structures without much energy loss. The guided waves are conventionally generated by the surface-mounted piezoelectric wafer active sensor (PWAS). However, there is still lack of understanding of the wave propagation in layered structures, especially in structures made of anisotropic materials such as carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. In this paper, the Rayleigh-Lamb wave strain tuning curves in a PWAS-mounted unidirectional CFRP plate are analytically derived using the normal mode expansion (NME) method. The excitation frequency spectrum is then multiplied by the tuning curves to calculate the frequency response spectrum. The corresponding time domain responses are obtained through the inverse Fourier transform. The theoretical calculations are validated through finite element analysis and an experimental study. The PWAS responses under the free, debonded and bonded CFRP conditions are investigated and compared. The results demonstrate that the amplitude and travelling time of wave packet can be used to evaluate the CFRP bonding conditions. The method can work on a baseline-free manner.

Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) has many desirable qualities, including being lightweight and very strong. These characteristics have led to its use in applications ranging from small consumer products to vehicles. Circular and square CFRP members were fabricated using 8ply unidirectional prepreg sheets stacked at different angles ($[+15^{\circ}/-15^{\circ}]_4$, $[+45^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}]_4$ and $[90]_8$, where $0^{\circ}$ coincides with the axis of the member). Based on the collapse characteristics of a CFRP circular member, the collapse characteristics and energy absorption capability were analyzed. Impact collapse tests were carried out for each section member. In this study, the impact energies at crossheads speeds of 5.52 m/s, 5.14 m/s and 4.57 m/s were 611.52 J, 529.2 J and 419.44 J (circular member) 2.16 m/s, 1.85 m/s and 1.67 m/s are 372.4 J, 274.4 J and 223.44 J (square member). The purpose is to experimentally examine the absorption behavior and evaluation the strength in relation to changes in the stacking configuration when the CFRP circular members with different stacking configurations were exposed to various impact velocities. In addition, the dynamic characteristics were considered.

This aims to examine experimentally the absorption behavior and strength of circular CFRP members with different stacking configurations on exposure to a separate impact velocity. In addition, considered the dynamic characteristics. Circular and square CFRP members were prepared from 8-ply unidirectional prepreg sheets stacked at different angles ($0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}$, where the $0^{\circ}$ direction coincides with the axis of the member) and interface numbers (2, 4, and 6). Based on the collapse characteristics of the circular CFRP members. In this study, for the circular members, the impact energies at crosshead speeds of 5.52 m/s, 5.14 m/s, and 4.57 m/s are 611.52 J, 529.2 J, and 419.44 J (at circular members), respectively. Likewise, for the square members, the impact energies at crosshead speeds of 2.16 m/s, 1.85 m/s, and 1.67 m/s are 372.4 J, 274.4 J, and 223.44 J (at square members).

With increasing population density and high-rise expansion of buildings in recent years, elevators have become to play a pivotal role in our everyday lives as most people take an elevator several times even in a day. The elevator penetration and distribution rates in Korea have increased dramatically every year, and the emergence of skyscrapers leads to accelerating the development of elevator industry. Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) exhibit better mechanical and thermal properties than steel suitable for uses as elevator wire ropes. In this paper, in order to analyze the properties of CFRPs, the tensile strength of unidirectional (UD) CFRP wire ropes was characterized and finite element analysis was conducted for bending simulation. Simulation results were compared.

This paper presents nonlinear numerical analysis results which were compared with the tested tensile strengths of CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) laminates with 14 different stacking sequences. The composite laminate coupons were cured under an autoclave pressure using resin-impregnated unidirectional tapes. The nonlinearity of the matrix was considered for the analysis, which was obtained from lamina tests. The Hashin failure criteria and progressive failure analysis were used for the nonlinear finite element analysis. The comparison results show that the current approach is acceptable to predict the tensile strengths of the CFRP laminate coupons with various stacking sequences and no damage. However, it is not acceptable to predict the tensile strengths of the laminate specimens with a center hole.

The carbon fiber reinforced/epoxy laminated composites were fabricated with initial fiber failures within the unidirectional fiber pre-pregnated ply. The fiber failures were made intentionally either parallel to and/or perpendicular to the unidirectional fibers within the ply. The pre-made clear-cut cracks were found to be healed partially after laminating process. The laminates were impacted with or without initial fiber failures within the laminates. The force versus deflection curves were compared. The partially healed laminates showed the reduced laminate stiffness as compared to those without any intentional fiber failures. The impact curves were compared with size and the location of the initial failures varied.

Off-axis compressive deformation behavior of a unidirectional CFRP laminate at high temperature and its strain-rate dependence in a quasi-static range are examined for various fiber orientations. By comparing the off-axis compressive and tensile behaviors at an equal strain rate, the effect of different loading modes on the flow stress level, rate-dependence and nonlinearity of the off-axis inelastic deformation is elucidated. The experimental results indicate that the compressive flow stress levels for relatively larger off-axis angles of $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ are about 50 percent larger than in tension for the same fiber orientations, respectively. The nonlinear deformations under off-axis tensile and compressive loading conditions exhibit significant strain-rate dependence. Similar features are observed in the fiber-orientation dependence of the off-axis flow stress levels under tension and compression and in the off-axis flow stress differential in tension and compression, regardless of the strain rate. A phenomenological theory of viscoplasticity is then developed which can describe the tension-compression asymmetry as well as the rate dependence, nonlinearity and fiber orientation dependence of the off-axis tensile and compressive behaviors of unidirectional composites in a unified manner. It is demonstrated by comparing with experimental results that the proposed viscoplastic constitutive model can be applied with reasonable accuracy to predict the different, nonlinear and rate-dependent behaviors of the unidirectional composite under off-axis tensile and compressive loading conditions.

In this paper, we reviewed major design parameters for a solid type of deployable antenna and its structural design. We performed modal analysis for a single reflector panel made of aluminum and CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) to confirm the appropriateness of selected materials. We then predicted the elastic modulus of CFRP using the principles of unidirectional composite elasticity stiffness predictions such as the ROM (Rule of Mixture) and HSR (Hart Smith 10% Rule). To optimize the shape of the antenna reflector, a structural stiffness analysis was performed using derived numerical optimization factors. Six structural stiffness analyses were performed using the constructed experimental design method. The resulting optimal shape conditions are proposed to meet the structural stiffness requirements while minimizing weight.
