  • The safety of marine construction workers and marine pollution problems are occurring due to large-scale offshore construction. In particular, underwater construction work in the sea has a higher risk than other work, so it is necessary to apply an unmanned alternative system that considers the safety of the workers. In this paper, the ROV system for offshore construction has been developed for underwater unmanned work. A monitoring system was developed for position control through the control of underwater propellants, pneumatic gripper, and monitoring of underwater work. As a result of the performance evaluation, the underwater movement speed of the ROV was evaluated to be 0.89 m/s, and it was confirmed that the maximum load of the pneumatic gripper was 80 kg. In addition, the network bandwidth required for underwater ROV control and underwater video streaming was evaluated to be more than 300Mbps, wired communication at 92.7 ~ 95.0Mbit/s at 205m, and wireless communication at 78.3 ~ 84.8Mbit/s.

  • Recently, The interest about underwater acoustic communication is increase such as marine resources, disaster prevention, weather prediction, and so on. Because the underwater acoustic communication uses a water as media, the underwater acoustic communication has a lot of restrictions. Although the underwater acoustic communication is hard, it is important to consider the security. In this paper, we estimate the performance of cryptographic algorithms(AES, ARIA, and LEA) on a various devices, available in underwater acoustic communication, and analysis the results. This result will be provide effective data confidentiality for underwater communication.

  • Recently, the needs for the development and application of marine robots are increasing as marine accidents occur frequently. However, it is very difficult to acquire the information by utilizing marine robots in the marine environment. Therefore, the needs for the researches of sensor networks which are composed of underwater, surface and aerial robots are increasing in order to acquire the information effectively as the information from heterogeneous robots has less limitation in terms of coverage and connectivity. Although various researches of the sensor network which is based on marine robots have been executed, all of the underwater, surface and aerial robots have not yet been considered in the sensor network. To solve this problem, a collaborative control method based on the acoustic information and image by the sonars of the underwater robot, the acoustic information by the sonar of the surface robot and the optical image by the camera of the static-floating aerial robot is proposed. To verify the performance of the proposed method, the collaborative control of a MUR(Micro Underwater Robot) with an OAS(Obstacle Avoidance Sonar) and a SSS(Side Scan Sonar), a MSR(Micro Surface Robot) with an OAS and a BMAR(Balloon-based Micro Aerial Robot) with a camera are executed. The test results show the possibility of real applications and the need for additional studies.

  • This paper introduces a test bed for communication protocol schemes of underwater acoustic sensor network, and also shows experimental results obtained from the test bed. As a testing protocol, carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) is evaluated on underwater acoustic channel. A sensor node is equipped with a DSP control board of ATmega2560 and a commercial underwater modem produced by Benthos. The control board not only manipulates a GPS signal to acquire the information of location and time, but also controls the underwater modem to operate according to the procedure designed for a given testing protocol. Whenever any event takes place such as exchanging control/data packets between underwater modems and acquiring location and timing information, each sensor node reports them through radio frequency (RF) air interface to a central station located on the ground. The four kinds of packets for CSMA/CA, RTS(Request To Send), CTS(Clear to Send), DATA, ACK(Acknowledgement) are designed according to the underwater communication environment and are analyzed through the lake experiment from the point of feasibility of CSMA/CA in underwater acoustic communications.

  • The inter-symbol interference(ISI) is one of the main obstacles to reliable high-rate data communication in the shallow underwater acoustic channel. This paper studies on the simulation of adaptive equalizer used as a means of mitigating the ISI in the shallow underwater acoustic communication system. The underwater channel is modeled as a superposition of multiple paths, whose lengths and relative delays are calculated from the channel geometry. Based on this channel model, computer simulations are carried out to investigate the performance of adaptive equalizer in the shallow underwater acoustic channel.

  • Node localization is the basic task of underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs). Most of the existing underwater localization methods rely on ranging accuracy. Due to the special environment conditions in the ocean, beacon nodes are difficult to deploy accurately. The narrow bandwidth and high delay of the underwater acoustic communication channel lead to large errors. In order to reduce the ranging error and improve the positioning accuracy, we propose a localization algorithm based on ranging correction and inertial coordination. The algorithm can be divided into two parts, Range Correction based Localization algorithm (RCL) and Inertial Coordination based Localization algorithm (ICL). RCL uses the geometric relationship between the node positions to correct the ranging error and obtain the exact node position. However, when the unknown node deviates from the deployment area with the movement of the water flow, it cannot communicate with enough beacon nodes in a certain period of time. In this case, the node uses ICL algorithm to combine position data with motion information of neighbor nodes to update its position. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm greatly improves the positioning accuracy of unknown nodes compared with the existing localization methods.

  • Federated learning (FL) is a new paradigm in machine learning (ML) that enables multiple devices to collaboratively train a shared ML model without sharing their local data. FL is well-suited for applications where data is sensitive or difficult to transmit in large volumes, or where collaborative learning is required. The Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) is a network of underwater devices that collect and exchange data. This data can be used for a variety of applications, such as monitoring water quality, detecting marine life, and tracking underwater vehicles. However, the harsh underwater environment makes it difficult to collect and transmit data in large volumes. FL can address these challenges by enabling devices to train a shared ML model without having to transmit their data to a central server. This can help to protect the privacy of the data and improve the efficiency of training. In this view, this paper provides a brief overview of Fed-IoUT, highlighting its various applications, challenges, and opportunities.
