  • The underpotential deposition of zinc was investigated on carbon steel and nickel. The relationship be-tween the deposition potentials and the corresponding amounts of charge for deposited layers shows a very similar trend to the multilayer adsorption mechanism. The experimental results fit a mathematical model de-rived on the basis of the BET equation for the underpotential deposition.

  • There have been many efforts on the generating metal nanocrystals enclosed by high-index facets for the use as highly active catalysts. This paper describes a facile synthesis of Au trisoctahedra with high-index facets. In brief, the Au trisoctahdra were prepared by reduction of $HAuCl_4$ in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) containing poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) and trace amount of $AgNO_3$. The Ag ions in the reaction solution played a critical role in controlling the trisoctahedral shape of the final product by underpotential deposition (UPD) on the Au surfaces. The as-prepared Au trisoctahedra were single crystal and enclosed by high-index {441}, {773} and {331} facets.

  • The electrochemical preparation and spectroscopic characterisation of iridium-antimony (Ir-Sb) species is important owing to their potential applications as nanostructure materials. Nanostructures, i.e. nanoflower and nanodisk, of Ir-Sb were electrodeposited on conductive substrates using a practical electrochemical method based on the simultaneous underpotential deposition (UPD) of Ir and Sb from the IrCl3 and Sb2O3 at a constant potential. Electrochemical UPD mechanism of Ir-Sb was studied using cyclic voltammetry and potential-controlled electrochemical deposition techniques. Herein, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy were used to determine the morphological and structural properties of the electrochemically-synthesised Ir-Sb nanostructures.

  • A new oscillator for electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) was developed by using an operational amplifier without any LC component. The home-made EQCM using this oscillator showed only 0.02 Hz frequency noise at 0.3 s gate time when a 6 MHz AT-cut crystal was used. Pb underpotential deposition on gold substrate in nitric acid media was examined to demonstrate the performance of this EQCM. The derivative of frequency change could be obtained without averaging multiple scans.

  • The development of simple methods for As detection has received great attention because As is a toxic chemical element causing environmental and health-related issues. In this work, the effect of nanostructures of Au electrodes on their electroanalytical performance during As detection was investigated. Different Au nanostructures with various surface morphologies such as nanoplate Au, nanospike Au, and dendritic Au structures were prepared, and their electrochemical behaviors toward square-wave anodic stripping voltammetric As detection were examined. The difference in intrinsic efficiency for As detection between nanostructured and flat Au electrodes was explained based on the crystallographic orientations of Au surfaces, as examined by the underpotential deposition of Pb. The most efficient As detection performance was obtained with nanoplate Au electrodes, and the effects of the pre-deposition time and interference on As detection of the nanoplate Au electrodes were also investigated.

  • Ultrasmall electodes are of great importance for basic electrochemical study and applications. We fabricated single crystal (111) Au nanowire (NW) by growth mechanism on substrate without any catalyst. Consequently, these high aspect NW combined with tungsten microwire and the electrodes having NW tip on their end were obtained. These single crystal Au (111) NWs were characterized by electron microscope and electrochemical analysis. We show that precise electrochemical measurement could be possible on these NW electrode by obtaining underpotential deposition (UPD) and ferricyanide CV profiles on the electrode. The immersed depth of electrode into solution was controlled in micrometer scale by piezo-driven manipulator.

  • Assisted by the highly sensitive confocal microprobe Raman spectrometer and proper surface roughening procedure, the Raman investigation on the adsorption and reaction of methanol was performed on Pt-Ru electrodes with different coverages. A detailed description of the roughening process of the Pt electrodes and the underpotential deposition of the Ru was given. Reasonably good Raman signal reflecting the metal-carbon vibration and CO vibration was detected. The appearance of vibrations of the Ru oxides, together with the existence of Ru-C, Pt-C and CO bands, clearly demonstrates the participation of the bi-functional mechanism during the oxidation process of methanol on Pt-Ru electrodes. The Pt-Ru electrode was found to have a higher catalytic activity over Pt electrodes. This preliminary study shows that electrochemical Raman spectroscopy can be applied to the study of rough electrode surface.
