  • The ATP Draw is a graphical mouse-driven preprocessor to ATP on the Windows Platform. User can build a graphical picture of the electric circuit by selecting components from menus. In this paper, ATP Draw is used to analyze power transformer transient characteristics and lightning overvoltage phenomenon in underground transmission cables. The results obtained by simulations will be used to identify the response of the digital protection algorithms in power system equipment

  • This paper summarizes the feasibility study of HTS power cables in Korea, including the conceptual design of a 154 kV 1000 MVA class HTS cable system, and the relative economic evaluations between conventional and HTS cable systems in Seoul area. According to the results of the economic evaluations, the HTS cable system can reduce the construction work for 168km of underground transmission lines, saving 700 million USD of construction cost in 2010.

  • Sheath circulating current rises from the change of sheath mutual impedance which is caused by imbalanced cable system, and different section length between joint boxes. However, mixed burying typo and imbalance section length take many parts of main reasons of sheath circulating current increment in domestic underground transmission power cables. Therefore, the increment reason and variation characteristics of sheath circulating current is analysed with simulation using EMTP/ATPDraw and measuring data of practical cable system which has a problem of exceeding sheath circulating current in this paper.

  • For last 10 years, there are big progress and many efforts in the development of HTS power equipments by some country including South Korea. Especially HTS cable system is the strongest candidate among them from the viewpoint of applying to real grid, because of the feature of it, compact and large capacity. In South Korea, transmission level 154kV, the world top voltage class, HTS cable system was installed and has been tested in KEPCO Gochang Underground Cable Test Field since the early of 2010 in order to meet test requirements made by KEPCO, the only grid company in South Korea. The type test of it will be completed by October 2010 and subsequently long-term load cycle test will be performed during 6 months. Also in the near future, KEPCO has a plan to demonstrate transmission level HTS cable system in real grid, in order to meet practical requirements and confirm the feasibility of it. This paper says the test plan of transmission level 154kV HTS cable system and the way how to test it.

  • The effects of surge arresters for the protection of transmission systems against direct lightning strokes have already been reviewed by many researchers. However, their studies have not encompassed underground cable systems. Therefore, in this paper we investigate the 22.9kV combined distribution systems that have arresters and ground wires. In addition, we analyze the overvoltages on underground distribution cable sections when direct lightning strokes contact the overhead ground wire using EMTP. Finally, we discuss the effect of lightning strokes according to the change of cable length and installation of arresters. This study provides insulation coordination methods for reasonable system design in 22.9kV underground distribution cable systems.

  • This paper describes the protection of insulation joint box in combined transmission line which is connected with the 154kV underground power cables. An actual power cable system was selected to establish modeling and to analyze. Modeling was established in EMTP and ATPDraw. Simulation was carried out according to the buried method of cable and connection method of CCPU. Results presented in this paper will be applied to another power cable systems.

Application of Particle Swarm Optimization to the Reliability Centered Maintenance Method for Transmission Systems

  • Electric power transmission utilities make an effort to maximize profit by reducing their electricity supply and operation costs while maintaining their reliability. The development of maintenance strategies for aged components is one of the more effective ways to achieve this goal. The reliability centered approach is a key method in providing optimal maintenance strategies. It considers the tradeoffs between the upfront maintenance costs and the potential costs incurred by reliability losses. This paper discusses the application of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique used to find the optimal maintenance strategy for a transmission component in order to achieve the minimum total expected cost composed of Generation Cost (GC), Maintenance Cost (MC), Repair Cost (RC) and Outage Cost (OC). Three components of a transmission system are considered: overhead lines, underground cables and insulators are considered. In regards to aged and aging component, a component state model that uses a modified Markov chain is proposed. A simulation has been performed on an IEEE 9-bus system. The results from this simulation are quite encouraging, and then the proposed approach will be useful in practical maintenance scheduling.

  • The domestic needs for larger capability of power sources are increasing to cope with the expanding power load which results from the industrial developments & the progressed life style. In summer, the peak load is mainly due to the non-industrial reasons such as air-conditioners and other cooling equipments. To cover the concentrated peak load in stable, the power transmission lines should be more constructed and efficiently operated. The ampacity design of the underground cable system is generally following international standards such as IEC287, IEC60853 and JCS168 which regards the shape of 100% daily full power loads. It is not so efficient to neglect the real shapes of load curves generally below 60~70% of full load. The dynamic (real time) rating system tends to be used with the measured thermal parameters which make it possible to calculate the maximum ampacity within required periods. In this paper, the CTM(Conductor Temperature Monitoring) which is the base of dynamic rating systems for tunnel environment is proposed by a design of lumped thermal network ($\pi$-type thermal model) and distribution temperature sensor attached configuration, including the estimation results of its performances by load cycle test on 345kV single phase XLPE cable.

  • In this work, the correlation between the PD Patterns and the electrical tree propagation has been investigated by use of the specimen removed from the insulation of the real 154 kV XLPE underground power cables. As a result, it could be deduced that the PD pattern regarding electrical trees depends on their type which could be classified into three different distinct groups such as branch-bush mixed. Considering the results of our investigation, if the partial discharge magnitude is only considered for the diagnosis of the cable system, it is possible to draw a wrong decision. Therefore, it is possible to propose that the time characteristics of PD pattern should be taken into account for the diagnosis of the cable system in addition to the conventional $\Phi$-q-n characteristics.

전력구트라프간접수냉방식에서의 지중송전케이블에 대한 열해석 (A Thermal Analysis for the Underground Power Transmission Cable by a Water Pipe Cooling Method with Trough in Tunnel)

  • 원활한 전력공급을 위해 지중송전케이블에서 발생된 열을 제거하기 위한 방법으로 전력구트라프간접수냉방식이 적용된 지중송전계통에 대한 각 주요 구성요소의 열해석을 수행하였다. 열해석을 수행한 결과, 주어진 조건에서 냉동기가 채택된 냉동장치에서는 냉각수유량은 $2{\sim}3{\ell}/s/pipe$, 팬에 의한 풍속은 $1{\sim}2m/s/fan$인 경우에 지중송전계통의 원활한 전력공급을 위한 냉각계통의 최적조건으로 계산되었다. 반면에 냉각탑만을 설치한 경우에는 냉각수유량 및 풍속이 각각 $2{\sim}3s/pipe$ 및 6 m/s/fan이 최적조건으로 계산되었다. 그러나 냉각탑만이 설치된 경우에는 풍속이 너무 커져서 용량이 큰 팬의 설치 및 전력구내에서 작업자의 작업조건에 적합하지 않다. 따라서 본 연구의 주어진 조건하에서 지중송전계통의 냉동계통은 냉동기가 설치된 냉동장치가 바람직하다.
