Since the first underground transmission line in Korea was installed in 1974, the two types of underground transmission power cables, oil-filled and XLPE, have been applied for underground transmission lines. As the manufacturing technologies of XLPE cable have been improved and the simplicity of installation and maintenance has been focused on, the installations of XLPE cables have been largely increased since the mid 1990's. For the first time, in Korea, the 345kV XLPE cable was installed at Pyungtaek thermal power plant in 2003, February. So, this paper introduces the project profile, the design of cable and its accessory, the cable system design, installation and site test.

In this paper, to develop a broadband power line communication modem and network technologies, we analysis the characteristics of underground power line communication channel through actual tests. To measure the amount of attenuation by length and structure of broadband power line communication channel, we configure a measurement system of the channel with signal generator, spectrum analyzer and non-contacted coupler. For actual tests, we choose two of the longest lines among medium-voltage lines as a single line in the test lines and measure the characteristics of noise and signal attenuation level of the channel. The experimental results show that the channel has a impulse noise which can remarkably reduce communication capability. In the case of long lines, high-frequency attenuation appeared by length of the lines.
Because of the continuous growth of energy consumption and also the tendency to site gas pipeline and power line along the same route, the close proximity of power lines and buried metallic pipelines has become more and more frequent. The lightning strokes collected by an electric substation or power line tower might cause arcing through the soil to an adjacent gas pipeline. This paper gives the outline of the resistance coupling and the standards of distance between gas pipeline and tower ground.

Length of most underground power cable in nation is not so long. Therefore it is operated without conductor transposition due to low unbalanced ratio. However, if cable length is long, line constant of each cable will be different. Different line constant can induce unbalanced voltage and current of sheath. Also it can induce several induced interference. This paper describes the operation effectiveness through steady and transient analysis on transposition and untransposition of cable conductor. Especially sheath current and induced voltage are analyzed and compared in case of transposition and untransposition. EMTP is used for modeling and analysis.

This paper analyzes overvoltage on testing line for various parameter effect examination. Model systems consist of overhead line and underground cable. The model considered actual characteristic data of distribution lines. and will be constructed at testing yard. The simulations were performed under various line configuration such as cable kinds, cable length, lightning wave, lightning wave time, transformer and branch circuits. The simulation models are established by EMTP/ATPDraw and Line Constants are calculated by ATP_LCC. When lightning surge strikes on conductor of overhead line, EMTP/ATPDraw calculates overvoltage in many cases. Simulation results will be compared with real testing results at testing yard. The compared results will be used to establish protection methods in actual underground distribution systems.

This paper describes the overvoltage analysis and reduction methods of insulation joint boxes in underground transmission power cables when direct lightning surge strikes to overhead transmission line. An actual 154kV combined transmission line with underground Power cables was modelled in ATPDraw for simulation. Simulations were performed to analyze the overvoltage between insulation joint boxes, sheath-to-ground voltage according to the distance between cable conductors, cable lengths, burying types, CCPU connection types. The most effective method to reduce the induced overvoltage of Insulation joint boxes was proposed. It is evaluated that the proposed reduction method riven from the detailed simulations can be effectively applied to the actual underground power cable systems.

The underground transmission lines is continuously expanded in power systems. Therefore the fault of underground transmission lines are increased every year because of the complication of systems. However the studies dealing with fault location in the case of the underground transmission lines are rarely reported except for few papers using traveling wave method and calculating underground cable impedance. This paper describes the algorithm using fuzzy system and travelling wave method in the underground transmission line. Fuzzy inference is used for fault discrimination. To organize fuzzy algorithm, it is important to select target data reflecting various underground transmission line transient states. These data are made of voltage and average of RMS value on zero sequence current within one cycle after fault occurrence. Travelling wave based on wavelet transform is used for fault location. In this paper, a variety of underground transmission line transient states are simulated by EMTP/ATPDraw and Matlab. The input which is used to fault location algorithm are Detail 1(D1) coefficients of differential current. D1 coefficients are obtained by wavelet transform. As a result of applying the fuzzy inference and travelling wave based on wavelet transform, fault discrimination is correctly distinguished within 1/2 cycle after fault occurrence and fault location is comparatively correct.
Developing fault location system for underground power cable which can detect its fault location exactly require very high speed data acquisition and signal processing capability. We are developing fault location system which is different from conventional fault locator. This fault location system monitor underground power cable by using on-line speed current sensor and if there are an accident, it record its transient signal and calculate fault location by analyzing it. Signals which acquired when power cable fault arise, showed transient characteristics and its frequency band is very hish. So, to develop fault location system, we designed special high speed data acquisition and signal processing board. In this thesis, we describe on data acquisition and signal processing H/W design for fault location system on underground power cable.

A study to identify the energized status of the 22.9kV underground power cable by the detection of vibration was reformed. We derived that there exists vibration at double the line frequency in live cables by electromagnetic force. The vibration can be picked up by accelerometer sensor. A prototype was tested on the underground distribution system in Chonan Station, KEPCO. The results are presented and suggest the applicability of the detecting device.
Because of the continuous growth of energy consumption and also the tendency to site power lines and pipelines along the same route, the close proximity of power lines and buried metallic pipelines has become more and more frequent. The lightning strokes collected by an electric substation or power line tower might cause arcing through the soil to an adjacent gas pipeline. This paper gives the review of the breakdown mechanism and the standards of separation distance between lower and pipelines.
