  • Due to a variable noises in the field underground lines, clear technology of noises is very important in the diagnosis technology of partial discharge. Therefore we progressed filter test to improve the measuring test of partial discharge in a field. We applied to field test after making W-LC filter for partial discharge measurement, and then designed experimental environment such as under-ground distribution lines of field. Measuring sensor for test was UHF sensor. And we analysed those using the Lemke Probe and oscilloscope (TDS-3054, Tektronix). Finally, we obtained excellent data of noise decrement in the joint box of 22.9[kV] distribution lines from above experiment.

  • The increased use of underground power distribution as opposed to overhead lines contributes to the aesthetics of the downtown areas. But there is an inherent risk of accidental electrocution should there be damage to the insulation of the cable because of heavy rain. Should a pedestrian make contact with this cable indirectly, via a man hole cover, electrocution could result. In this paper, we analyse electrical shock accident and checking results in this low-voltage handhole.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigated the ELF-MF emission level of various environments such as 258 facilities near located to high voltage transmission lines and 120 high voltage transmission lines, 17 underground cable lines. In addition, ELF-MF reduction rate according to separation distance was calculated by using simulations. An appropriate separation distance showing below 4mG was at least 70m. In the case of the appropriate separation distance for 120 high voltage transmission lines, 154kV required 20m of separation distance and 345kV required 60m of separation distance. The simulation results showed that the appropriate separation distance showing below 4mG was 40m and 60m for overhead 154kV and 345kV respectively. To adjust the worst conditions considering the aspects of environmental impact assessment study and the electric power currents that will increase in the future, the appropriate minimum separation distance for HVTL is judged to be above 70m in this study. Thus, there is a need to establish the greenbelt or buffer zone within 70m so as to create an environment in which the receptors are not exposed and thereby eliminate the risk factors of ELF-MF against humans.

  • In order to evaluate the magnetic field (MF) exposure level in residential areas near high voltage power lines, this research measured MF levels at 120 sites near high voltage transmission lines in the Busan region, Gwangju region, Daegu region and Changwon region from July to December, 2005, and compared and analyzed the efficiencies by measuring and applying the MF emission levels of underground cables and high voltage transmission lines. As a result of the investigation of the MF exposure level by the building usage, the average MF level of 17 locations at schools was $2.44{\pm}2.45mG;$ that of 10 locations at hospitals $6.21{\pm}12.39mG;$that of 76 locations at apartments $2.55{\pm}2.98mG;$ and that at kindergartens and infant houses $3.32{\pm}4.21mG$. MF exposure was analysed as a function of distance from the source and the MF levels directly below a source were $5.15{\pm}8.72mG$, those within 30 m were $3.10{\pm}3.32mG$, while those within 50 m were $2.45{\pm}2.38mG$, and within 100 m were $0.71{\pm}0.93mG$. In order to determine the difference of MF levels by the actual distance from high voltage transmission line within the same building, the evaluation of the floor position and the MF level has shown that the MF levels were highest in the order of roof, 4th floor, 3rd floor, 2nd floor and 1st floor. Comparison of MF emission intensity of underground cables and high voltage transmission lines, has shown that underground cables have an 86-94% of reduction ratio in MF compared to high voltage transmission lines, thus demonstrating higher efficiency.

  • Distance relay is operated in calculating line impedance. It can be worked accurately in overhead line. However, power cables or combined transmission lines need compensation for calculated impedance because cable systems have sheaths, grounding wires and sheath voltage limiters(SVLs) Neuro-fuzzy can be viewed either as a fuzay system, a neural network or fuzzy neural network and it can estimate the location of the fault accurately. In this paper, fault section and fault location can be classified and estimated in neuro- fuzzy inference system and neural network.

  • Underground buried cables can cause disconnections during the construction of roads and other subterranean structures due to uncertain designs. This paper describes experiments conducted to detect and verify the locations of these cables utilizing ground penetrating radar (GPR). The experiments were carried out at an active road construction site, where cable burial was anticipated. The GPR used operated within a frequency range of 400 MHz to 900 MHz to probe underground structures. The exploration methodology consisted of an initial GPR test to survey the entire area, followed by a secondary test informed by the results of the initial experiment, incorporating a diverse and increased number of lines. The findings confirmed the hyperbolic reflection patterns of cables at consistent locations along the same lines. These patterns were then compared to existing designs to corroborate the presence of cables at the identified locations. This research establishes an effective GPR methodology based on the electromagnetic wave reflection pattern, specifically the hyperbola, to detect difficult-to-locate underground buried cables.

  • Because of the continuous growth of energy consumption, and also the tendency to site power lines and pipelines along the same routes, the close proximity of high voltage structures and metallic pipelines has become more and more frequent. Moreover, normal steady state and fault currents become higher as electric networks increase in size and power. Therefore, there has been and still is a growing concern (safety of people marking contact with pipeline, risk of damage to the pipeline coating, the metal and equipment connected to pipeline. especially cathodic protection system) about possible hazards resulting from the influence of high voltage power system on metallic structures(gas pipeline, oil pipeline and water pipeline etc.). Therefore, we analyze the interference problems when the gas pipeline is buried with power cable in the same submarine tunnel. This paper present the results of the study about interference mechanism, AC corrosion, limitation of safety voltage and analysis of indiction voltage.

  • Power system fault analysis has been based on symmetrical component method, which describes power system elements by positive, negative and zero sequence impedance. Obtaining accurate line impedances as possible are very important for estimating fault current magnitude and setting distance relay accurately. Especially, accurate calculation of zero sequence impedance is important because most of transmission line faults are line-to-ground faults, not balanced three-phase fault. Since KEPCO has started measuring of transmission line impedance at 2005, it has been revealed that the measured and calculated line impedances are well agreed within reasonable accuracy. In case of underground transmission lines, however, large discrepancies in zero sequence impedance were observed occasionally. Since zero sequence impedance is an important input data for distance relay to locate faulted point correctly, it is urgently required to analyze, detect and consider countermeasures to the source of these discrepancies. In this paper, development of pre/post processor to ATP (Alternative Transient Program) version of EMTP (Electro-Magnetic Transient Program) for sequence impedance calculation was described. With the developed processor ATP-cable, effects of ground resistance and ECC (Earth Continuity Conductor) on sequence impedance were analyzed.

  • The line charging is becoming larger due to the expansion of underground cable and extra high voltage lines. It causes reactive power surplus at light load condition which may force generators to operate reluctantly in the under excited mode. This paper proposes the pratical criteria and methodolgy for the shunt reactor planning while suppressing generator's under excited operation.

  • Recently, as there are a rise in the standard of living and higher concerns of an electromagnetic wave and environment, undergrounding the aerial cables which are supported by large pylons and generally considered as the least attractive feature of an urban area is on an increasing trend to improve aesthetic benefits and electric reliability. This study applied Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) which is expected to become an effective tool to measure indirect benefit to estimate the substantial benefits of undergrounding overhead power line projects in an urban area. The tunneling construction project of the 345kV Shinsungnam electric power cable in Seongnam city was selected and a hypothetical scenario was given to respondents to determine their levels of Willingness to Pay (WTP) for undergrounding overhead power lines. The result from the estimation of the WTP of undergrounding overhead power lines in Seongnam city was calculated as approximately 17.1 billion won. Placing existing overhead lines underground is difficult to justify economically. Most undergrounding costs appear to be justified by aesthetic and public policy considerations. Therefore, considering the result of this study, undergrounding overhead power lines is of great benefit to public.
