  • A comparative study on 'Dang-gui' and 'Kang-whal' the two species of Angelica growing in Korea was carried out about the morphology and cytology. The somatic chromosome number of Cham dang-gui, Ill dang-gui, Badi-namul was found to be 2N=22. The somatic chromosome number of Kang-whal was found to be 2N=110, that of Chili kang-whal to be 2N=44, that of Mul kang-whal to be 2N=22. Stoma of species of Dang-gui were same in size. Those of Chili kang-whal and Kang-whal were strikingly larger than the other. Chili kang-whal and Kang-whal were verified to be polyploid in the genus Angelica.

  • The hexane and ether extracts from the roots of Angelica dahurica caused a significant inhibition of hepatic drug-metabolizing enzyme (DME) activity. Through systematic fractionation by $SiO_2\;column$ and vacuum liquid chromatography monitoring by bioassays, three furanocoumarins, phellopterin, byakangelicin and tert-O-methylbyakangelicin were isolated as active principles. These components have biphasic responses, both inhibitory and inducing effects on DME system. Tert-O-methyl byakangelicin was found to have the strongest enzyme inhibitory potency.

  • The diterpene acid 1 was isolated from the roots of Anisotome lyallii(Apiaceae/Umbelliferae). The structure of the compound was elucidated as anisotomenoic acid 1 on the basis of spectroscopic methods. This compound was evaluated against P388 murine leukaemia and B 16/F10 melanoma cells.

& Sav.) Kitag.와 유사하나 키가 작고, 총포가 없으며 모든 잎이 3개로 갈라지는 특징에 의해 쉽게 구별된다.

  • Four coumarins were isolated from chloroform extract of the root of Peucedanum japonicum and identified as praeruptorin A (1), xanthotoxin (2), psoralen (3) and bergapten (4) on the basis of spectroscopic methods. The inhibitory activities of these coumarins on monoamine oxidase prepared by mouse brian were tested. The IC50 values of them were shown to be $27.4{\mu}M$ (1), $40.7{\mu}M$ (2), $35.8{\mu}M$ (3), and $13.8{\mu}M$ (4), in vitro.

  • The in vivo anti-tumor activities of decursinol angelate (1) and decursin (2) isolated from the roots of Angelica gigas were investigated. These two compounds, when administered consecutively for 9 days at 50 and 100 mg/kg i.p. in mice, caused a significant increase in the life span and a significant decrease in the tumor weight and volume of mice inoculated with Sarcoma-180 tumor cells. These results suggest that decursinol angelate (1) and decursin (2) from A. gigas have anti-tumor activities.

  • Centella asiatica (Linn.) Urban (Umbelliferae) which is also known as 'pegaga' is highly consumed and eaten raw as 'ulam' in Malaysia. C. asiatica is used in traditional medicines to treat various health conditions such as rheumatism, inflammation, syphilis, skin diseases and diarrhoea. Various reports exhibited that the crude extracts and isolated bioactive compounds of C. asiatica possessed a broad range of pharmacological activities such as anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-tumor, wound healing, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective and memory enhancing properties. The pharmacological validation on anti-microbial and immunomodulatory of C. asiatica is very limited and several existence review papers related for this plant had not been focused for both activities. This review therefore attempts to combine the existing literature to offer immense scope for researchers engaged in validation of the traditional claims and bioactivities of this plant related with anti-microbial and immunomodulatory potential.

  • To investigate biological active constituents from natural products, we have studied the roots of Angelica koreana Max. (Umbelliferae). Fifteen compounds were isolated from the MeOH extract by column chromatography on a silica gel. The compounds were identified as isoimperatorin, oxypeucedanin, oxypeucedanin hydrate, osthol, nodakenin, 2-hydroxy-4-methylacetophenone, cimifugin, falcarindiol, heraclenin, pabulenol, umbelliferone, demethylsuberosin, hamaudol, sec-O-glucosylhamaudol, and prim-O-glucosylcimifugin, respectivelv, by spectroscopic means. Among these, the latter eight compounds were isolated for the first time form this plant.

  • Angelica genuflexa (Umbelliferae) is a perennial herbaceous plant which has also been variously reported as A. koreana and Ostericum koreanum. The MeOH extract was reported to have strong anti-thrombotic potential in the acute thrombosis model. In our preliminary testing, the MeOH extract and one of the solvent fractions (90% MeOH fr.) were observed to have both platelet anti-aggregating and anti-coagulant effects. Five coumarins, isoimperatorin (1), pabulenol (2), isooxypeucedanin (3), oxypeucedanin hydrate (4) and osthol (5) were isolated from the MeOH extract of Angelica genuflexa in the course of searching for anti-platelet and anti-coagulant components. • Cnidium officinale is a perennial herb belonging to the family Umbelliferae. Its origin is China and is also distributed in Korea and Japan. In 2017, a phenomenon of browning and wilting of leaves was discovered in the cultivation field of the National Institute of Forest Science, Suwon, Korea. The pathogens isolated from plants were consistent with Fusarium solani as a result of morphological examination and molecular phylogenetic analysis. This is the first record of F. solani on C. officinale in Korea.
