  • The etching characteristics of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and etch selectivity of ZnO to $SiO_2$ in $BCl_3/Ar/Cl_2$ plasma were investigated. It was found that ZnO etch rate shows a non-monotonic behavior with increasing both Ar fraction in $BCl_3$ plasma, RF power, and gas pressure. The maximum ZnO etch rate of 53 nm/min was obtained for $BCl_3$(16 sccm)/Ar(4 sccm)/$Cl_2$(3 sccm) gas mixture. The chemical state of etched surfaces was investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). From these data, the suggestions on the ZnO etch mechanism were made.

  • An ethanol-producing yeast strain, CHFY0201, was isolated from soil in South Korea using an enrichment technique in a yeast peptone dextrose medium supplemented with 5% (w/v) ethanol at $30^{\circ}C$. The phenotypic and physiological characteristics, as well as molecular phylogenetic analysis based on the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit (26S) rDNA gene and the internally transcribed spacer (ITS) 1+2 regions, suggested that the CHFY0201 was a novel strain of Schizosaccharomyces pombe. During shaking flask cultivation, the highest ethanol productivity and theoretical yield of S. pombe CHFY0201 in YPD media containing 9.5% total sugars were $0.59{\pm}0.01$ g/l/h and $88.4{\pm}0.91%$, respectively. Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation for ethanol production was carried out using liquefied cassava (Manihot esculenta) powder in a 5-l lab-scale jar fermenter at $32^{\circ}C$ for 66 h with an agitation speed of 120 rpm. Under these conditions, S. pombe CHFY0201 yielded a final ethanol concentration of $72.1{\pm}0.27$ g/l and a theoretical yield of $82.7{\pm}1.52%$ at a maximum ethanol productivity of $1.16{\pm}0.07$ g/l/h. These results suggest that S. pombe CHFY0201 is a potential producer for industrial bioethanol production.

  • Bacillus sp. SB-007 was isolated from pea leaves harvested from the southwestern parts of South Korea through screening on a minimal medium containing 0.2% purified cutin for its ability to induce the cutinase production. However, no cutinase was produced when it was grown in a minimal medium containing 0.2% glucose. A proteomic approach was applied to separate and characterize these differentially secreted proteins. The expression level of 83 extracellular proteins of the cutinase-producing Bacillus sp. strain SB-007 incubated in a cutinase-induced medium increased significantly as compared with that cultured in a non cutinase-induced medium containing glucose. The extracellular proteome of Bacillus sp. SB-007 includes proteins from different functional classes, such as enzymes for the degradation of various macromolecules, proteins involved in energy metabolism, sporulation, transport/binding proteins and lipoproteins, stress inducible proteins, several cellular molecule biosynthetic pathways and catabolism, and some proteins with an as yet unknown function. In addition, the two protein spots showed little similarities with the known lipolytic enzymes in the database. These secreted proteome analysis results are expected to be useful in improving the Bacillus strains for the production of industrial cutinases.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between the mental model and the depictive gestures observed in the explanations of elementary school students about the reason why seasons change. As a result of analysis in gestures of each mental model, mental model was remembered as "motion" in case of CM-type, and showed more "Exphoric" gestures that expressed gesture as a language. CF type is remembered in "writings or pictures," and metaphoric gestures were used when explaining some alternative concepts. CF-UM type explained with language in detail, and showed a number of gestures with "Lexical." Analyzing depictive gestures, even with sub-categories such as rotation, revolution and meridian altitude, etc., a great many types of gestures were expressed such as indicating with fingers, palms, arms, ball-point pens, and fists, etc., or drawing, spinning and indicating them. We could check up concept understandings of the students through this. In addition, as we analyzed inconsistencies among external representations such as verbal language and gesture, writing and gesture, and picture and gesture, we realized that gestures can help understanding mental models of the students, and sometimes, we could know that information that cannot be shown by linguistic explanations or pictures was expressed in gestures. Additionally, we looked into two research participants that showed conspicuous differences. One participant seemed to be wrong as he used his own expressions, but he expressed with gestures precisely, while the other participant seemed to be accurate, but when he analyzed gestures, he had whimsical concepts.

  • This study incorporates a welder and a generator as needed while using the generator to be used as a welder is to configure the system. As such, in order to offer an integrated system to prevent the rapid charging process to manage the power state information, system configuration is the most important. Ideally, the random controls the flow of charge is ideal for that. When charging is good as long as possible, less current. However, In this study, the most ideal fusion welder and generator as required by the generator or welder can be used as a system is proposed. Specifically, the damage can be caused by carelessness, so short-circuit protection, overload protection, reverse polarity protection, automatic charging system is all about, including the ability to adjust.

  • This paper was discussed about in-site application of heavyweight(or high density) concrete. Heavyweight concrete was placed with the method of conventional. Placement of conventionally mixed heavyweight concrete is subject to the same considerations of quality control as normal density concrete, except that it is far more susceptible to variations in quality due to improper handling. It is particularly subject to segregation during placement. Segregation of heavyweight concrete results not only in variation of strength but, far more importantly, in variation in density that are intolerable for work this type, since this adversely affects shielding properties. Heavyweight concrete materials and heavyweight concrete should be sampled and tested prior to and during construction to insure conformance with applicable standards and specifications.

  • The bulging of mandibular angle area, frequently, make some difficulties in social life due to its reckless appearence, especially in oriental nations. So, many authors had reported its causes and surgical techniques for correction since late 19th century with diagnosis of masseter hypertrophy. But in spite of its muscular origin, major surgical techniques, in general, should aim complete bony reduction or osteotomy and supplemental myotomy as in hemimandibular hypertrophy or mandibular elongation. We used ultrasonogram for soft tissue depth estimation and expearenced some complications such as incomplete lingual cortical bony reduction, condylar fracture in mandibular angle reduction via intraoral circumvestibular approach. So we reported our surgical technique for angle reduction with possible complications.

  • [ $PM_{2.5}$ ], particulate matter less than 2.5 um in a diameter, can penetrate deeply into the lungs. Exposure to $PM_{2.5}$ has been associated with increased hospital visits for respiratory aliments as well as increase mortality. $PM_{2.5}$ is a byproduct of combustion processes and as such has a complex composition including a variety of metallic elements, inorganic and organic compounds as well as biogenic materials (microorganisms, proteins, etc). In this study, the average concentrations of fine particulates $PM_{2.5}$ have been measured simultaneously in Asan and Seoul, Korea, by using particulate matter portable sampler from September 2001 to August 2002. Sample collection filters were analyzed by ICP-OES to determine the concentrations of metallic elements (As, Ni, Fe, Cr, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Si). Annual mean $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations in Asan and Seoul were 37.70 and $45.83\;{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. The highest concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ were found in spring season in both cities and the concentrations of measured metallic elements except As in Asan were higher than those in Seoul, suggesting that yellow dust in spring could affect $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations in Asan rather than Seoul. The correlation coefficients of Pb and Zn were 0.343 for Asan and 0.813 for Seoul during non-yellow dust condition, suggesting that Pb and Zn were influenced with the same sources. The correlation coefficients between Si and Fe in the fine particulate mode were 0.999 (Asan) and 0.998 (Seoul) during yellow dust condition. It was suggested that these two elements were impacted by soil-related transport from China during the yellow dust storm condition.
