  • The structural, optical, and electrical properties of ZnO thin films grown on glass by radio-frequency (rf) magnetron sputtering were investigated. The mixture flow ratio of $O_2$ to Ar, which was operated with sputtering gas, was chosen as a parameter for growing high-qualify ZnO thin films. The structural properties and surface morphologies of the thin films were characterized by the X-ray diffraction and the atomic force microscope, respectively. As for the optical properties of the films, the optical absorbance was measured in the wavelength range of 300-1100 nm by using UV-VIS spectrophotometer. The optical transmittance, absorption coefficient, and optical bandgap energy of ZnO thin films were calculated from the measured data. The crystallinity of the films was improved and the bandgap energy was increased from 3.08 eV to 3.23 eV as the oxygen flow ratio was increased from 0 % to 50 %. Furthermore, The ultraviolet and violet luminescences were observed by using photoluminescence spectroscopy. The hall mobility was decreased with the increase of oxygen flow ratio.

  • In this work, silver nitrate complexes of sulfanilamide-5-methyl-2-thiophene carboxaldehyde (SMTCA) ligand intercalated Zn/Al-layered double hydroxide [Ag-SMTCA-LDH] were synthesized for the potential application as an antimicrobial system. The SMTCA ligand was synthesized by reacting sulfanilamide and 5-methyl-2-thiophene carboxaldehyde in methanol and further complexation with silver nitrate metal ions [Ag-SMTCA]. The structural analyses of synthesized compounds confirmed an intercalation of Ag-SMTCA into Zn/Al-NO3-LDH by flake/restacking method. SMTCA, Ag-SMTCA and Ag-SMTCA-LDH were characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was found that Ag-SMTCA-LDH exhibited good antimicrobial activity against both gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis, [B. subtilis], Staphylococcus aures, [S. aureus]) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli, [E. coli], Pseudomonas aeruginosa [P. aeroginosa]) bacteria as well as excellent antioxidant activity.

  • This study was performed to understand wood durability to climate deterioration of planted Indonesian wood specie such as Albizia, Gmelina, Mangium and Mindi. Wood samples were exposed to indoor and outdoor condition. $L^*a^*b^*$ and Color changes (${\Delta}E*ab$) were determined by a spectrophotometer. As a result, color of all samples was changed more markedly by ultraviolet radiation. In indoor test with UV, brightness of wood specimens from four species was not changed and all samples were changed into more reddish and yellowish. In accelerated weathering test, all samples were bleached and changed into more greenish and blueish. In outdoor test, brightness of wood specimens decreased in Albizia and Gmelina and increased in Mangium and Mindi. All wood specimens in outdoor test were changed into more greenish and blueish. Albizia and Gmleina woods showed greater color change than those of Mangium and Mindi. Especially, color change of wood samples might be influenced greatly by moisture. In conclusion, wood color changed into more clearly by UV radiation. Therefore, exposing woods to UV radiation could be one of reasonable methods to improve wood quality on visual characteristic.

  • Ultraviolet rays, which have wavelengths smaller than 400 nm, are very harmful to the eyes. Recently, high-energy visible light was also revealed to be harmful to retinal cells. Therefore, polymer eyeglass lenses that can block UV and high-energy visible light are needed for eye health. In this study, high-refractive-index polymer eyeglass lens, n=1.67, were manufactured using the injection-mold method with the m-xylene diisocyanate monomer, 2,3-bis((2-mercaptoethyl)thio)-1-propanethiol monomer, benzotriazole UV absorber, release of alkyl phosphoric ester, dye mixture of CI solvent violet 13, and catalyst of dibutyltin dichloride mixture. A multi-layer anti-reflection coating was applied to manufactured polymer eyeglass lenses for both sides using an E-beam evaporation system. The optical properties of the manufactured lenses with the UV and high-energy visible light-blocking function were analyzed by UV-visible spectrophotometry. As a result, the polymer eyeglass lens with a UV absorber of 0.5 wt. % blocked 99% of UV and high-energy visible light shorter than 411 nm. The average transmittance of the polymer eyeglass lens with a UV absorber of 0.5wt.% was 97.9% in the range of 460 ~ 660 nm for photopic eye sensitivity higher than 10%. Therefore, clear image acquisition in photopic vision is possible.

  • Purpose: A simple and efficient method to prepare nanocrystalline ZnO thin film with pure strong UV emission on soda-lime-silica glass substrates by low-temperature annealing was improved. Methods: Crystal structural, surface morphological, and optical characteristics of nanocrystalline ZnO thin films deposited on soda-lime-silica glass substrates by prefiring final annealing process at 300$^{\circ}C$ were investigated by using X-ray diffraction analysis, field emission-scanning electron microscope, scanning probe microscope, ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectrophotometer, and photoluminescence. Results: Highly c-axis-oriented ZnO films were obtained by prefiring at 300$^{\circ}C$. A high transmittance in the visible spectra range and clear absorption edge in the ultra violet range of the film was observed. The PL spectrum of ZnO thin film with a deep near band edge emission was observed while the defect-related broad green emission was nearly quenched. Conclusions: Our work will be possibly adopted to cheaply and easily fabricate ZnO-based optoelectronic devices at low temperature, below 300$^{\circ}C$, in the future.

  • In this paper, we investigated the effects of high-energy electron beam irradiation (HEEBI) on the optical transmittance of InGaZnO (IGZO) films grown on transparent Corning glass substrates, with a radio frequency magnetron sputtering technique. The IGZO thin films deposited at low temperature were treated with HEEBI in air at room temperature (RT) with an electron beam energy of 0.8 MeV and doses of $1{\times}10^{14}-1{\times}10^{16}electrons/cm^2$. The optical transmittance of the IGZO films was measured using an ultraviolet visible near-infrared spectrophotometer (UVVIS). The detailed estimation process for separating the transmittance of HEEBI-treated IGZO films from the total transmittance of IGZO films on transparent substrates treated with HEEBI is given in this paper. Based on the experimental results, we concluded that HEEBI with an appropriate dose of $10^{14}electrons/cm^2$ causes a maximum increase in the transparency of IGZO thin films. We also concluded that HEEBI treatment with an appropriate dose shifted the optical band gap ($E_g$) toward the lower energy region from 3.38 to 3.31 eV. This $E_g$ shift suggested that HEEBI in air at RT with an appropriate dose acts like a thermal annealing treatment in vacuum at high temperature.

  • Inorganic pigments have been received a great attention for various applications including paint, glazed ceramic ink, art tile, and building exterior due to their excellent thermal and chemical stability. Traditionally, the compositions of $PbCrO_4$, CdS and CdSe have been widely used as a yellow inorganic pigment. However, the use of these compositions has been restricted in recent years, because they contain harmful elements such as Cd, Cr, Pb and Se. In this study, new environment-friendly ceria-based pigment was synthesized using solid state reaction. Crystal structure and morphology of the obtained $Ce_{1-x}Zr_xBi_yO_{2-y/2}$ yellow pigment were analyzed using XRD and SEM, respectively. Substitutional effect of Zr and Bi on the pigment color was analyzed using UV-vis. spectrophotometer and CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ analysis. The crystal structure of the obtained pigments was dependent on the calcination temperature. The color characteristics and absorption band of the pigments were dependent on the calcination temperature and Zr, Bi contents. As a result, all the obtained yellow pigments showed the effective absorption ranged from ultraviolet to visible light, and $Ce_{0.44}Zr_{0.36}Bi_{0.20}O_{0.19}$ (x = 0.36, y = 0.20) pigment showed the most brilliant yellow color.

  • Crosslinked polyimides (PIs) were synthesized by reacting 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)-diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and 2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFDB) with various ratios of the cross-linkable, end-capping agent cis-1,2,3,6-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (CDBA) via ring-opening metathesis polymerization. Residual stress behaviors were investigated in-situ during thermal imidization of the crosslinked PI precursors using a thin film stress analyzer (TFSA) by wafer bending method. The thermal properties were investigated via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The optical properties were measured by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV-vis) and spectrophotometry. All properties were interpreted with respect to their morphology of crosslinked networks. With increasing the amounts of the end-capping agent, the residual stress decreased from 27.9 to -1.3 MPa, exhibited ultra-low stress and high thermal properties. The minimized residual stress and enhanced thermal properties of the crosslinked PI makes them potential candidates for versatile high-density multi-layer structure applications.

  • A Woolen carpet from the late Joseon Dynasty was unearthed in the process of repairing Seongjeonggak in Changdeokgung. Since relics are rarer than documentary records, the woolen carpet is highly valued as a relics. It is presumed to have been woven in the late 19th or early 20th century because there is a record of repairing Seongjeonggak in 1907. In the carpet, a pattern is made by inserting colored yarn dyed yellow and red onto a reddish-purple ground weave. The selvage of the woolen carpet used cotton thread, and jute is used for the warp and weft of the ground weave. The colored patterns is made of wool in the form of loop pile. Cut piles may appear occasionally when the colored yarn changes, but are almost invisible from the surface because they are pressed tightly with a shuttered weft. Making carpets with jute and wool is thought to be influenced by the Brussels carpets of the mid-18th century. Furthermore, the woolen carpet is torn and the pattern is completely unclear; however, it is understandable that the pattern is partially repeated. Microscopic and Fourier transform-Infrared spectrometer(FT-IR) analyses were performed for the above investigation. To identify the dyes used in relics, we compared them with natural dyed fabric samples based on chromaticity measurements and Ultraviolet/Visible spectrophotometer(UV-Vis) analysis. These analyses revealed that the woolen carpet's dyed green yarn did not use indigo, and reddish-purple ground weave is estimated to have used Caesalpinia sappan.
