Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were treated with ultrasonic (40kHz) and microbubble. The organic serum components, glucose were decreased compared to control at microbubble single treatment (M) and ultrasonic treatment (UL), but glucose concentrations in fish serum of all experimental groups analyzed in this study were also within the normal range. The organic serum components, cholesterol and total protein were no significant change by ultrasonic and microbubble treatment. There were no significant changes in the lysozyme activity on ultrasonic and microbubble treatment. Serum bactericidal activity decreased on ultrasonic single treatment (UL) compared to the control (P<0.05), but the numbers of bacterial colonies were significantly lower than those in the negative (PBS). The results of this study indicate that ultrasonic and microbubble treatment did not have a critical effect on the serum composition and innate immunity of O. mykiss, and that it is a way to do not significant stress on the fish body as a countermeasure against sea lice.
The effects of ultrasonic melt treatment on the microstructures of aluminum piston were examined at five observation parts having different cooling rates. The microstructure of aluminum piston consisted of primary Si, eutectic Si, and various types of intermetallic compounds. Regardless of cooling rate, the ultrasonic melt treatment transformed dendritic eutectic cells to equiaxed eutectic cells and it decreased the sizes of eutectic Si and intermetallic compounds that exist at eutectic cell boundaries. In the absence of ultrasonic treatment, coarse primary Si particles were severely segregated and its size was increased with decreasing the cooling rate. The ultrasonic treatment decreased the size of primary Si particles from $25.5{\sim}31.0{\mu}m$ to $17.6{\sim}23.1{\mu}m$, depending on the cooling rate. In the presence of ultrasonic treatment, relatively fine primary Si particles were homogeneously distributed throughout the piston. In addition, the ultrasonic treatment increased the population density and area fraction of fine primary Si particles.
The aim of this study was to recycle the waste livestock blood as one of the waste biomass by turning proteins, the main constituent of blood, into effective biological resources like amino acid. Ultrasonic technology was applied to solubilize the proteins in the waste livestock blood. And of the multiple ultrasonic frequencies tested, 20 kHz was confirmed to yield the highest solubilization rate. The optimum pretreatment conditions were determined to be 30-min treatment at an ultrasonic irradiation density of 0.5 W/mL, which resulted in a solubilization rate of 96.01%. Also, a gel permeation chromatography (GPC) confirmed that a large amount of proteins were solubilized, and in an experiment where ultrasonic treatment was applied to kill bacteria, death rates of general bacteria and total coliforms were found to be reduced by 99.93% and 100%, respectively. Based on these results, ultrasonic technology was confirmed to be a crucial part of treating and recycling the proteins in waste livestock blood.
The ultrasonics is a new technology in waste activated sludge(WAS) treatment. Ultrasonic treatment is well known method for the break up of microbial cells to extract out a variety of intercellular materials inside microorganism cell. This study was done to investigate the effects of the ultrasonic frequency and power on disruption of biosolids in WAS and to examine the effect on methane production of WAS treated by ultrasonics. Biosolids disruption with ultrasound is more effective at ultrasonic frequency of 40 kHz and power of 0.3 watt/mL. In the digestion with WAS pretreated by sonication time for 10 minute at 40 kHz and 0.3 watt/mL, the total quantity of generated methane increased by 75%, as compared with experimental control(non-treatment).
It was investigated the effect of ultrasonic treatment on magnetic property of ultra fine magnetic Fe powders ($\alpha$-Fe) for magnetic tape. The properties were characterized with vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), particle size analyzer (PSA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). At 4hours ultrasonic treatment of 70 kHz, magnetic properties such as squareness ratio (S.Q. : 0.8868), orientation ratio (O.R. : 2.45) and switching field distribution (S.F. D. : 0.394) before taping were relatively enhanced. Cumulative particle size distribution of less than 5$\mu\textrm{m}$ fine powder was above 90% below 1 hour leaving time after ultrasonic treatment and it was supposed that ultrasonic treatment prevent aggregation. The magnetic values of S.Q. and S.F.D. of tape manufactured at 70 kHz and 4hour ultrasonic treatment were improved from 0.7747, 0.3818 to 0.8037, 0.3706, respectively. Electro-magnetic property used as in-output signal characteristic was improved, which showed that ultrasonic treatment developed the magnetic properties.
Sludge minimization from wastewater treatment plant is becoming more important to save disposal costs and to contribute to sustainable development. For the reduction of sludge production, solubilization and dewaterability of sludge are important factors in sludge processing. Ultrasonic treatment has been used to enhance sludge solubility and dewaterability with anaerobic digestion sludge, primary sludge, and activated sludge. At the ultrasonic power of 0.2 kW/L for 1 hour, anaerobic sludge and activated sludge showed higher solubilization efficiency than the primary sludge in terms of COD, proteins, and suspended solids. Ultrasonic treatment decreased sludge dewaterability and sludge settling characteristics up to 720 kJ/L of ultrasonic energy. In conclusion, ultrasonic treatment was effective for sludge solubilization but it deteriorate dewaterability (specific resistance) and settling characteristics (SVI) of sludge at the experimental conditions.
A328 alloy is an attractive candidate for recycle-friendly aluminum alloy in the recycling of automotive components. In this study, A328 alloy melt was degassed by ultrasonic vibration and the effect of treatment time on the density, fluidity and mechanical properties was investigated. Experimental results reveal that a constant value of density can be reached after less than 180 seconds of ultrasonic treatment time, but the density decreased when the treatment time was 300 seconds. Ti which was dissolved from the horn during ultrasonic treatment reduced the fluidity of melt. After degassing by ultrasonic vibration for 180 seconds, tensile strength increased from 201MPa to 250MPa, and elongation increased from 2.38% to 3.50%, however, further treatment deteriorated the mechanical properties.
All crude oil carries a little of water, sand, and mineral sediment molecules tightly bounded with hydrocarbons. The result is the gradual precipitation of these heavier elements into thick, granular petroleum by products known as crude oil sludge. The oily sludges in ship tanks and in storage facilities have to be treated efficiently in order to keep the security and the capacity of storage facilities, to protect a serious environmental pollution, and to retrieve lost resource. The oily sludge treatment system should be designed to satisfy requirements mentioned in safe work condition. As a basic study, in this paper, an oily sludge treatment system by ultrasonic waves was proposed. Then, the features of ultrasonic energy and recovery of sludge with ultrasonic waves are investigated by experiments. As results, we found that ultrasonic waves are a new energy to flow oil sludge environment-friendly in safe work condition. In addition, it was shown that ultrasonic energy is more efficient than thermal energy in treating oil sludge, and that the volume of wastes for disposal is reduced remarkably.
This study compared the mechanical properties of bamboo fiber composites and kenaf fiber composites through physical treatment (ultrasonic treatment). Kenaf, a composite of PP reinforced with bamboo fiber, was made using injection molding technology. PP was used as a binder and the ultrasonic treatment time of bamboo and kenaf was increased by 30 minutes to compare and study various mechanical properties of bamboo and kenaf composites through physical treatment. Interfacial properties such as internal cracks and internal structure of the wave cross section were confirmed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). As a result of the ultrasonic treatment, most of the characteristics were fragile as the ultrasonic treatment time was increased, and it was confirmed that the natural characteristics of the twisted fibers had a great influence on the characteristics of the composite material.
It is difficult to count colonial cyanobacteria Microcystis cells since the thickness of colonies is constrained by amorphous mucilage, making it impossible to estimate the number of cells. Disaggregation of Microcystis colonies into single cell is needed to improve the accuracy and precision of cell density estimation of naturally collected samples. Uultrasonic treatment method is commonly used owing to the simplicity and immediacy of the procedure. However, amplitude, frequency, and duration of ultrasonic treatment also cause cell loss during the experiment. Optimal ultrasonic treatment has not been standardized yet. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate optimal ultrasonic treatment by analyzing cell density and colony numbers. We collected colonial Microcystis from Changnyeong-Haman weir area in Nakdong River during harmful algal boom period from September to October in 2017. Ultrasonic treatment method was applied to disrupt colonies into single cells to enumerate cell density. Among treatment conditions, results from continuously treated for 100 seconds were found to be the optimum to reduce colonies to a suspension of single cell without cell losses under high and low density of Microcystis cells. Lugol iodine fixed cells followed by sonication showed less negative impact of cell damage within the optimal treatment time (100 seconds). Furthermore, disaggregated cells treated by sonication enables microscopic observation more easily since gas vacuoles were collapsed to facilitate sedimentation of cells under the counting chamber for quantitative enumeration of buoyant Microcystis cells.
