RETRACTED: Double-Dwell Hybrid Acquisition in a DS-UWB System

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of double-dwell hybrid initial acquisition in a direct sequence ultra-wideband (DS-UWB) system via detection, miss, false alarm probabilities, and mean acquisition time. In the analysis, we consider the effect of the acquisition sequence as well as the deployment scenario of the abundant multipath components over small coverage of the piconet in the DS-UWB system. Based on the simulation, we obtain various performance measures for the mean acquisition time by varying parameters such as the total number of hypotheses to be searched, subgroup size, and dwell time. We thereupon suggest the optimum parameter set for the initial acquisition in the DS-UWB system.

  • An ultrawide bandpass filter with sharp rejection and wider stopband is designed and implemented using multilayer ceramic configuration. The proposed filter is composed of a broadside coupled structure and a ring type filter with an embedded stripline stub. The measured results show that the fractional bandwidth and upper stopband of the proposed filter are 106 % and better than -30 dB, respectively. The insertion loss is less than 1 dB, and group delay is less than 0.3 ns in the passband. In addition, ring and broadside coupled gap structures are characterized and compared to the proposed structure.

  • This paper presents the architecture design of a high-speed, low-complexity 128-point radix-$2^4$ FFT processor for ultra-wideband (UWB) systems. The proposed high-speed, low-complexity FFT architecture can provide a higher throughput rate and low hardware complexity by using 2-parallel data-path scheme and single-path delay-feedback (SDF) structure. This paper presents the key ideas applied to the design of high-speed, low-complexity FFT processor, especially that for achieving high throughput rate and reducing hardware complexity. The proposed FFT processor has been designed and implemented with the 0.18-m CMOS technology in a supply voltage of 1.8 V. The throughput rate of proposed FFT processor is up to 1 Gsample/s while it requires much smaller hardware complexity.

  • In this paper, we discussed the trapezoidal antenna model in the microstrip structure for UWB communications in the frequency band of $3.1{\times}10.6GHz$. Through the computer simulations for the difference size of trapezoidal monopole microstrip antenna model, the good impedance matching characteristic of return loss less than -10dB(VSWR<2) in all the band of UWB showed. The optimized antenna of this paper also showed the quasi-isotropic radiation characteristics in the horizontal plane and linear phase characteristic of nondispersive property.

A 7.6 mW 2 Gb/s Proximity Transmitter for Smartphone-Mirrored Display Applications

  • This paper describes a high data rate proximity transmitter design for high resolution smartphone-mirrored display applications. A 2 Gb/s transmitter is designed with a low transmission power of -70 dBm/MHz and a wide bandwidth of nearly 3 GHz. A digital pre-correction method is employed in the transmitter to mitigate the inter-symbol interference problem. A carrier-based digital pulse shaping and a reconfigurable digital envelope generation methods are employed for robust operation by utilizing 20 phases from a 2 GHz phase-locked loop. A 6.5-9.5 GHz transmitter implemented in 65 nm CMOS achieves the maximum data rate of 2 Gb/s, consuming only 7.6 mW from a 1 V supply.

  • In this paper, we present performance analysis of an IEEE P802.15.3a high rate wireless personal area network transceiver. This physical layer standard uses QOSK as its sub-channel modulation scheme and orthogonal frequency domain modulation (OFDM) for sub-bands. OFDM is used for each sub-band so that multi-path effects are absorbed by equalizer and guard, and fading can be approximately modeled as additive white Gaussian noise. In multi-band ultra-wideband system, DAC quantization error is important noise source since high resolution conversion cannot be used due to high power consumption. Simulation result shows that, to get 640-Mbps throughput, at least 5-bits precision is necessary to maintain bit-error rate under 10$\^$-2/, which can be lowered, with channel coding, to 10$\^$-6/ that is the bit-error rate required by IEEE 802.15 upper protocol layer, in 4-meter LOS fading channel.

  • 본 논문에서는 최근 제한적으로 사용이 승인된 UWB(초광대역: Ultra-Wideband) 통신을 AWGN 하에서 다중 접속을 고려하지 않은 단일 사용사일 경우로 가정시, M진 값이 변화함에 따른 에러율과 성능 개선 기법으로 BCH를 채용시의 에러율을 비교 분석하였다. 기존에 연구되어 오던 변조로 PAM(Pulse Amplitude Modulation)과 PPM(Pulse Position Modulation)방식을 비교하였으며 에러율 $10^{-6}$을 기준으로 M=2, 4일 경우 PAM이 PPM보다 약 E$_{b}$/N$_{o}$ =3~4[dB], M=8 이상의 경우 PPM이 약 E$_{b}$/N$_{o}$ =9[dB], M=16일 경우 약 E$_{b}$/N$_{o}$ =15[dB]정도 성능이 우수하였다. AWGN 채널 하에서 에러 정정 부호인 BCH(15,7)를 도입하였을 경우 에러율 $10^{-6}$을 기준으로 PAM방식은 약 E$_{b}$/N$_{o}$ 가 약 1[dB], PPM 방식은 M=2, 4일 경우 약 E$_{b}$/N$_{o}$ =1~1.5[dB]정도 개선되었다.

  • 이 논문은 시간도약 다중접속(time hopping multiple access: THMA) 초광대역(ultra wideband: UWB) 시스템에서 Modified Hermite Polynomial(MHP)을 기저펄스로 사용하는 M진 고속전송 기법을 제안하고, 시스템의 성능을 분석한다. MHP 펄스 차수들의 상호간 직교성을 이용하여 서로 다른 차수의 MHP 기저펄스 N개를 선형결합하여 M진으로 전송한다. MHP 기저펄스의 상호상관 함수를 구하여 제안하는 M진 시스템의 이론적인 성능을 분석하고, 모의실험을 통해서 기존의 M진 전송에 비해서 시스템의 비트오류확률(bit error rate: BER)이 개선됨을 보인다.

  • This paper aims at designing an impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) transceiver, especially targeting the IEEE 802.15.4a indoor ranging and communication systems. We first investigate the IEEE 802.15.4a IR-UWB signals and suggest the full-digital transceiver architecture accordingly. Since the wireless systems equipped with the impulse signal have the property of low-duty cycle, i.e., discontinuity in time, while the conventional systems takes the continuous signals, it is required to reconfigure the system design, including link budget. Following brief introduction to our IEEE 802.15.4a IR-UWB system hardware, we finally examine the ranging performance in indoor environments to verify our system design.

A MB-OFDM UWB 0.18-μm CMOS RF Front-End Receiver

  • An RF front-end dual-conversion receiver for $3{\sim}5\;GHz$ MB-OFDM UWB systems is implemented in $0.18\;{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The receiver includes a two-stage UWB LNA, an RF mixer, an IF I/Q mixer, and a frequency synthesizer. The proposed receiver adopts the dual-conversion architecture to mitigate the burden of design of the frequency synthesizer. Accordingly, the proposed frequency synthesizer generates four LO tones from only one VCO. The receiver front-end achieves power gain of 16.3 to 21 dB, NF of 7 to 7.6 dB over $3{\sim}5\;GHz$, and IIP3 of -21 dBm, while consuming 190 mW from a 1.8 V supply.
