Being aware of growing needs for wireless communication led to the development of UWB systems, this study proposed an impulse for single band UWB systems which does not count a carrier; analyzed the characteristics and the problems of pulses suggested by the existing poise of the Un system; finally, proposed TDMG(Time Delay Multiple Gaussian) pulse that generates signals of UWB without attenuation of pulse width. The hardware structure of the TDMC pulse for the single band UWB system was modelled after describing the pulse in a mathematical method in an attempt to compare with performances of the existing pulses through computer simulation. The outcome of the test unveiled the fact that each center frequency of the TDMG pulse rose approximately 1GHz, and also each l0dB fractional bandwidth of the TDMG pulse was widened over 1GHz. In the case of derivative, center frequencies of the TDMG pulse rose over 1GHz each. As a consequence, the TDMG pulse appeared to have better quality frequency, satisfying the characteristics of spectrum and the band of frequency recommended by the FCC and decreasing interference with other wireless communication systems.

This paper discussed on the directive gain improvement method of the U-type ultra wide-band(UWB) planar patch antenna model with CPW feeding. For directive gain improvement, the U-type printed patch antenna model with CPW feeding is reconstructed as a microstrip structure by adding a reflection plane with aperture slot. The reflection coefficient of the reconstructed antenna is less than -6.5 dB(VSWR < 3.3) to the characteristic impedance of $50.08{\Omega}$ and showed the directive radiation patterns with the directive gain of 7.5 dBi ~ 10.1 dBi, the front-back ratio of 17.8 dB ~ 28.7 dB and the range of -3dB radiation angle over ${\pm}30^{\circ}$ to the main beam direction of ${\theta}=0^{\circ}$.

In this paper, we propose to extend the TSS-LS (Two-Step Search scheme with Linear search based Second step) scheme which was already proposed by the authors for coherent UWB (Ultra Wide Band) systems, to rapid and reliable acquisition of noncoherent UWB systems in multipath channels. The proposed noncoherent TSS-LS employing simple energy window banks utilizes two different thresholds and search windows to achieve fast acquisition. Furthermore, the linear search is adopted for the second step in the proposed scheme to correctly find the starting point in the range of effective delay spread of the multipath channels, and to obtain reliable BER (Bit Error Rate) performance of the noncoherent UWB systems. Simulation results show that the proposed TSS-LS can achieve significant reduction of the required mean acquisition time as compared to general search schemes. In addition, the proposed scheme achieves quite good BER performance, which is favorably comparable to the case of ideal perfect timing.

Chaotic OOK(On-Off Keying) modulation method can be used in LDR(Low Data Rate) UWB systems. The chaotic generator in one of the most important circuit in this system. The traditional chaotic generator circuits using analog feed back technique have low yield characteristic due to the process variation. A novel quasi-chaotic signal generator using digital PN-sequence in proposed in this paper and verified in 0.18um CMOS teleology.

To alleviate positioning error using wireless ultra-wideband (UWB) is primary concern, and it has been studied how to reduce the positioning error effectively. Thanks to many repeated transmissions of UWB signals, we can have a variety of selections to point out the most precise positioning result. Towards this, scanning method has been preferred to be used due to its simplicity. This exhaustive method firstly fixes the candidate position, and calculates the sum of distances from observed positions. However, it has tremendous number of computations, and the complexity is more serious if the size of two-dimensional range is the larger. To mitigate the large number of computations, this paper proposes the technique employing genetic algorithm and block windowing. To exploit its superiority, simulations will be conducted to show the reduction of complexity, and the efficiency on positioning capability.

In this paper, we propose an asynchronous UWB (Ultra Wide Band) Positioning scheme that can provide precise positioning performance with low complexity and low power consumption. We also present the residual test to improve the positioning performance in multipath channels having heavy NLoS (Non-Line of Sight) components. As compared to conventional ToA (Time of Arrival) positioning scheme that requires round-trip transmissions as many as the number of beacons, the proposed UWB positioning scheme effectively decrease power consumption and processing delay since a single round-trip transmission is only required. Also, as compared to conventional TDoA (Time Difference of Arrival) positioning scheme requiring precise synchronization among the beacons, asynchronous nature of the proposed scheme achieves very low system complexity. Through simulations in LoS (Line of Sight) channel models, we observe that the proposed scheme requires low system complexity, low power consumption, while providing positioning performance of almost the same accuracy as the conventional ToA and TDoA positioning schemes. In addition, the proposed scheme by employing the residual test achieves accurate positioning performance even in multipath channels having heavy NLoS components.

This paper presents an ultra wide band(UWB) mixer using anti-parallel diode pair(APDP) with simulation and measurement results. The proposed mixer adopts the even-harmonic direct conversion mixing, which consists of a couple of filter, in-phase wilkinson power divider, wideband $45^{\circ}$ power divider, and APDP. The m mixer is operating over 3.1 to 4.8 GHz and producing quadrature(I/Q) outputs with a conversion loss of 18 dB and input third order intercept point($IIP_3$) of 15 dBm. I/Q outputs also have difference of about 0.5 dB and phase difference of ${\times}3^{\circ}$ and $P_{1dB}$ of 2 dBm.

In this paper, we have illuminated the radiation modes of rectangular planar antennas to interpret the nature of the wideband characteristic upon which formulas for bandwidth prediction are presented. Rectangular planar antennas are being investigated by many researchers in virtue of relatively simple design and fabrication procedures to replace the cylindrical monopoles. But the design principle for rectangular planar antennas is still based on that of cylindrical monopoles, and the nature of the wideband characteristic and the formula to estimate the upper band frequency are not analyzed yet. In this research, we have shown the patterns of the radiation modes explaining the wideband characteristic and also proposed the upper band frequency with minor modification for the lower band frequency formula based on mode formation principles. Finally we have confirmed the validity of our results, within 10 % accuracy, by the application to some published results.

This study is to design the transmitter and receiver of short range UWB(Ultra Wide Band) imaging radar that is able to display high resolution radar image for front area of a UGV(Unmanned Ground Vehicle). This radar can help a UGV to navigate autonomously as it detects and avoids obstacles through foliage. The transmitter needs two transmitters to improve the azimuth resolution. Multi-channel receivers are required to synthesize radar image. Transmitter consists of high power amplifier, channel selection switch, and waveform generator. Receiver is composed of sixteen channel receivers, receiver channel converter, and frequency down converter, Before manufacturing it, the proposed architecture of transceiver is proved by modeling and simulation using several parameters. Then, it was manufactured by using industrial RF(Radio Frequency) components and all other measured parameters in the specification were satisfied as well.

In the parer, we design a non-coherent UWB system by adopting the architecture of a simplified asynchronous transmission and the edge-triggered pulse transmission, which makes e system performance independent of the share of the transmitted waveform, robust to multipath channels. The designed non-coherent UWB transceiver architecture has an advantage of the simple realization since any mixer, high-speed correlator, and high-sampling A/D converter are not necessary at the cost of performance degradation of about 3dB. Further, the designed non-coherent UWB transceiver is actually implemented with the wireless CANVAS prototype testbed in short range indoor application environments such as a lecture room. The implemented prototype testbed is proven to offer the data rate of 115kbps on the conditions of Peer-to-Peer(P-to-P) in the indoor channel within the range of about 10m.
