  • The use of high tensile steel plates is increasing in the fabrication of ship and offshore structures. The softening region which has lower yield stress than base metal is located to prevent cracking in the conventional high tensile steel. Also, thermo mechanical control process(TMCP) steel with low carbon equivalent has the softening region which occurs in the heat affected zone when high heat input weld is carried out. The softening region in the high tensile steel gives rise to serious effect on structural strength such as tensile strength, fatigue strength and ultimate strength. In order to make a reliable structural design using high tensile steel plates, the influence of the softening on plate strength should be evaluated in advance. In the previous paper, the authors discussed the ultimate compressive strength of 50HT steel square plates with softening region. In this paper, the ultimate compressive strength with varying the yield stress of softening region and the aspect ratio of the plate is investigated by using the elasto-plastic large deformation finite element method.

  • Methods for predicting the ultimate/buckling strength of ship structures have been extensively improved in terms of design formulas and analytical solutions. In recent years, the design strategy of ships and offshore structures has tended to emphasize lighter builds and improve operational safety. Therefore, the corresponding geometrical changes in design necessitate the use of high-tensile steel and thin plates. However, the existing design formulas were mainly developed for thick plates and mild steels. Therefore, the calculation methods require appropriate modification for new designs beased on high-tensile steel and thin plates. In this study, a modified formula was developed to predict the ultimate strength of thin steel plates subjected to compressive and shear loads. Based on the numerical results, the effects of the yield stress, slenderness ratio, and loading condition on the buckling/ultimate strength of steel plates were examined, and a newly modified double-beta parameter formula was developed. The results were used to derive and modify existing closed-form expressions and empirical formulas to predict the ultimate strength of thin-walled steel structures.

  • A series of rabbit common extensor tendon specimens of the humeral epicondyle were subjected to tensile tests under two displacement rates (100mm/min and 10mm/min) and different elbow flexion positions 45°, 90°and 135°. Biomechanical properties of ultimate tensile strength, failure strain, energy absorption and stiffness of the bone-tendon specimen were determined. Statistically significant differences were found in ultimate tensile strength, failure strain, energy absorption and stiffness of bone-tendon specimens as a consequence of different elbow flexion angles and displacement rates. The results indicated that the bone-tendon specimens at the 45°elbow flexion had the lowest ultimate tensile strength; this flexion angle also had the highest failure strain and the lowest stiffness compared to other elbow flexion positions. In comparing the data from two displacement rates, bone-tendon specimens had lower ultimate tensile strength at all flexion angles when tested at the 10mm/min displacement rate. These results indicate that creep damage occurred during the slow displacement rate. The major failure mode of bone-tendon specimens during tensile testing changed from 100% of midsubstance failure at the 90°and 135°elbow flexion to 40% of bone-tendon origin failure at 45°. We conclude that failure mechanics of the bone-tendon unit of the lateral epicondyle are substantially affected by loading direction and displacement rate.

  • The strength theory of concrete is significant to structure design and nonlinear finite element analysis of concrete structures because concrete utilized in engineering is usually subject to the action of multi-axial stress. Experimental results have revealed that lightweight aggregate (LWA) concrete exhibits plastic flow plateau under high compressive stress and most of the lightweight aggregates are crushed at this stage. For the purpose of safety, therefore, in the practical application the strength of LWA concrete at the plastic flow plateau stage should be regarded as the ultimate strength under multi-axial compressive stress state. With consideration of the strength criterion, the ultimate strength surface of LWA concrete under multi-axial stress intersects with the hydrostatic stress axis at two different points, which is completely different from that of the normal weight concrete as that the ultimate strength surface is open-ended. As a result, the strength criteria aimed at normal weight concrete do not fit LWA concrete. In the present paper, a multi-axial strength criterion for LWA concrete is proposed based on the Unified Twin-Shear Strength (UTSS) theory developed by Prof Yu (Yu et al. 1992), which takes into account the above strength characteristics of LWA under high compressive stress level. In this strength criterion model, the tensile and compressive meridians as well as the ultimate strength envelopes in deviatoric plane under different hydrostatic stress are established just in terms of a few characteristic stress states, i.e., the uniaxial tensile strength $f_t$, the uniaxial compressive strength $f_c$, and the equibiaxial compressive $f_{bc}$. The developed model was confirmed to agree well with experimental data under different stress ratios of LWA concrete.

  • The reinforced concrete(RC) beam is developed cracks because the compression strength of concrete is strong but the tensile strength is weak. The structural strength and stiffness is decreased by reduction of tension resistance capacity of concrete due to the developed cracks. Using the fiber reinforced concrete that is increased the flexural strength and tensile strength at tensile part can enhance the strength and stiffness of concrete structure and decrease the tensile flexural cracks and deflection. Therefore, The reinforced concrete used the fiber reinforced concrete at tensile part ensure the safety and serviceability of the concrete structures. In this study, analytical model of a dual concrete beam that is composed of the normal strength concrete at compression part and the high tensile strength concrete at tensile part is developed by using the equilibrium condition of forces and compatibility condition of strains and is parted into elastic analytical model and ultimate analytical model. Three group of test beam that is formed of one reinforced concrete beam and two dual concrete beams for each steel reinforcement ratio is tested to examine the flexural behavior of dual concrete beams. The comparative study of total nine test beams is shown that the ultimate load of a dual concrete beams relative to the reinforced concrete beams have an increase in approximately 30%. In addition, the initial flexural rigidity, as used here, refer to the slope of load-deflection curves in elastic state is increased and the deflection is decreased.

  • Different methods of axial and tangential testing and various sample geometries were investigated, and new test geometries were designed to determine the ultimate tensile strength of zirconium cladding tubes. The finite element method was used to model the tensile tests, and the results of the simulations were evaluated. Axial and tangential tensile tests were performed on as-received and machined fuel cladding tube samples of both E110 and E110G Russian zirconium alloys at room temperature to compare their ultimate tensile strengths and the different sample preparation methods.

  • This paper deals with the experimental study on the hygrothermal ageing effect to the strength of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) materials for marine leisure boat manufactured by vacuum assisted resin infusion method. The experiments performed consist of tensile, flexural and shear tests according to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and Korean Industrial Standards (KS) test methods. Test coupons are varied from uni-directional(UD, $0^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$), Bi-Directional (BD), and Double-Bias (DB) carbon fiber fabrics in conjunction with epoxy resin. The results of tensile test show that tensile strength reduces significantly while not the same degree of reduction is observed for elasticity modulus with respect to the existence of hygrothermal ageing effect. This implies that the tensile strain induced from external load holds steady values but ultimate strength values change widely under hygrothermal ageing effect. In case of the flexural test, $0^{\circ}$ UD shows more strength reduction than $90^{\circ}$ UD while BD has reduced values in both flexural strength and elasticity modulus under hygrothermal ageing effect. It is learned that the bending strain induced from external load and ultimate strength values are reduced with respect to hygrothermal ageing effect. Shear test performed only on DB materials, and the results show marginal reduction in ultimate strength and moderate reduction in elasticity modulus. This means that the shear strain varies more than ultimate shear strength with respect to hygrothermal ageing effect. The experiment conducted in this paper clearly demonstrates the differences in material properties of the CFRP for the consideration of hygrothermal ageing effect. Findings obtained from this experimental study can serve as a fundamental input data for the realistic structural responses of marine leisure boat built in CFRP materials.

  • The characteristics of metal matrix composite under dynamic tension at high strain rates up to the order of $10^3/sec$ is studied by using newly developed apparatus. The composite material processed in this research is aluminum-alumina metal matrix composites, arid fabricated by compocasting with the fiber volume fraction from 5 to 20%. The whisker and matrix material used in this paper were ${\delta}-Al_2O_3$ and Al-6061, respectively. The mechanical tests performed in this research are low and high strain rate tensile test. At low strain-rate tensile test, the modulus of elasticity and the ultimate tensile strength of the composites were improved about 77 pct. and 55 pct., respectively comparing with the unreinforced materials. At strain-rate from $10^{-3}\;to\;10^3/s$, the effect of strain-rate on the modulus, ultimate strength, flow stress is determined. Also the effect of strain rate on the modulus, ultimate tensile strength, flow stress and elongation to failures were investigated.

  • Carbon fiber sheet is attractive due to its good tensile strength, resistance to corrosion, and low weight. The strengthening of concrete structures with externally bonded carbon fiber sheets is increasingly being used for repair and rehabilitation of existing structures. However CFS strengthened beams break down under the service loads. As rupture strain is not reached ultimate value, reduction of the tensile strength is recommended. This study evaluate CFS tensile strength reduction factor which is required to analyze bending moment.
