The paper presents an investigation of the widely varying mechanical performance and behaviour of steel and Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) reinforced concrete beams using non-destructive techniques of Acoustic Emission (AE) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) under four-point bending. Laboratory experiments are performed on both differently reinforced concrete beams with 0.33%, 0.52% and 1.11% of tension reinforcement against balanced section. The results show that the ultimate load-carrying capacity increases with an increase in tensile reinforcement in both cases. In addition to that, AE waveform parameters of amplitude and number of AE hits successfully correlates and picks up the divergent mechanism of cracking initiation and progression of failure in steel reinforced and GFRP reinforced concrete beams. AE activity is about 20-30% more in GFRP-RC beams as compared to steel-RC beams. It was primarily due to the lower modulus of elasticity of GFRP bars leading to much larger ductility and deflections as compared to steel-RC beams. Furthermore, AE XY event plots and longitudinal strain profiles using DIC gives an online and real-time visual display of progressive AE activity and strains respectively to efficaciously depict the crack evolution and their advancement in steel-RC and GFRP-RC beams which show a close matching with the micro-and macro-cracks visually observed in the actual beams at various stages of loading.
This paper presents the flexural behavior and strengthening effect of reinforced concrete beams bonded with carbon FRP plate. Parameters involved in this experimental study were plate bond length and sheet web anchorage length. Test beams were strengthened with FRP plate on the soffit and anchored with FRP sheet on the web. In general, strengthened beams with no web anchorage were failed by concrete cover failure along the longitudinal reinforcement. On the other hand, strengthened beams with web anchorage were finally failed by delamination shear failure within concrete after breaking of CFRP sheet wrapping around web. The ultimate load and deflection of strengthened beams increased with an increased bond length of FRP plate. Also, the ultimate load and deflection increased with an increased anchorage length of FRP sheet. Particularly, the strengthened beams with web anchorage maintained high ultimate load resisting capacity until very large deflection. The shape of strain distribution of CFRP plate along beam was very similar to that of bending moment diagram. Therefore, an assumption of constant shear stress in shear span could be possible in the analysis of delamination shear stress of concrete. In the case of full bond length, the ultimate resisting shear stress provided by concrete and FRP sheet Increased with an increase of web anchorage length. In the resisting shear force, a portion of the shear force was provided by FRP anchorage sheet.
The attack of environmental aggressive agents progressively reduces the structural reliability of buildings and infrastructures and, in the worst exposition conditions, may even lead to their collapse in the long period. A change in the material and sectional characteristics of a structural element, due to the environmental damaging effects, changes its mechanical behaviour and varies both the internal stress redistribution and the kinematics through which it reaches its ultimate state. To identify such a behaviour, the evolution of both the damaging process and its mechanical consequences have to be taken into account. This paper presents a computational approach for the analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete elements under sustained loading conditions and subjected to given damaging scenarios. The effects of the diffusion of aggressive agents, of the onset and development of the corrosion state in the reinforcement and the corresponding mechanical response are studied. As known, the corrosion on the reinforcing bars influences the damaging rate in the cracking pattern evolution; hence, the damage development and the mechanical behaviours are considered as coupled phenomena. The reliability of such an approach is validated in modelling the diffusion of the aggressive agents and the changes in the mechanical response of simple structural elements whose experimental behaviour is reported in Literature. A second set of analyses studies the effects of the corrosion of the tendons of a P.C. beam and explores potentially unexpected structural responses caused by corrosion under different aggressive exposition. The role of the different types and of the different positions of the damaging agents is discussed. In particular, it is shown how the collapse mode of the beam may switch from flexural to shear type, in case corrosion is caused by a localized chloride attack in the shear span.
This paper presents the flexural performance of steel beam-to-column joints composed of hollow structural section beams and columns. A finite element (FE) model was developed incorporating geometrical and material nonlinearities to evaluate the behaviour of joints subjected to bending moments. The numerical outcomes were validated with experimental results and compared with EN1993-1-8. The demountability of the structure was discussed based on the tested specimen. A parametric analysis was carried out to investigate the effects of steel yield strength, end-plate thickness, beam thickness, column wall thickness, bolt diameter, number of bolts and location. Consequently, an analytical model was derived based on the component method to predict the moment-rotation relationships for the sub-assemblies with extended end-plates. The accuracy of the proposed model was calibrated by the experimental and numerical results. It is found that the FE model is fairly reliable to predict the initial stiffness and moment capacity of the joints, while EN1993-1-8 overestimates the initial stiffness extensively. The beam-to-column joints are shown to be demountable and reusable with a moment up to 53% of the ultimate moment capacity. The end-plate thickness and column wall thickness have a significant influence on the joint behaviour, and the layout of double bolt-rows in tension is recommended for joints with extended end-plates. The derived analytical model is capable of predicting the moment-rotation relationship of the structure.
This paper examines the flexural behavior of full-scale prestressed concrete girders that were constructed of steel fiber reinforced ultra high performance concrete (UHPC). This study is designed to provide more information about the bending characteristics of UHPC girders in order to establish a reasonable prediction model for flexural resistance and deflection for future structural design codes. Short steel fibers have been introduced into prestressed concrete T-girders in order to study their effects under flexural loads. Round straight high strength steel fibers were used at volume fraction of 2%. The girders were cast using 150~190 MPa steel fiber reinforced UHPC and were designed to assess the ability of steel fiber reinforced UHPC to carry flexural loads in prestressed girders. The experimental results show that steel fiber reinforced UHPC enhances the cracking behavior and ductility of beams. Moreover, when ultimate failure did occur, the failure of girders composed of steel fiber reinforced UHPC was observed to be precipitated by the pullout of steel fibers that were bridging tension cracks in the concrete. Flexural failure of girders occurred when the UHPC at a particular cross section began to lose tensile capacity due to steel fiber pullout. In addition, it was determined that the level of prestressing force influenced the ultimate load capacity.

SHCCs (Strain Hardening Cement Composites) show the high energy tolerance capacity due to the interfacial bonding of the fibers to the cement matrix. For effective material design and application of SHCCs, it is needed to investigate the compression, four-point bending, direct tensile response of SHCCs with different types of fibers and water-cement ratio. For these purposes, three kinds of fibers were used: PP(polypropylene, 2.0%), PVA(Polyvinyl alcohol, 2.0%), PE (Polyethylene, 1.0%). Also, effects of water-cement ratio(0.45, 0.60) on the SHCCs were evaluated in this paper. As the result of test, SHCCs with PVA and PE fiber were showed better overall behavior than specimens with PP fibers on bending and direct tensile test. Also, for the same type of fiber, SHCCs with water-cement ratio of 0.45 exhibited higher ultimate strength than specimen with water-cement ratio of 0.60 on compression strength, and showed the multiple cracking on bending and direct tensile test. Therefore, to improve of workability and dispersibility of SHCCs on water-cement ratio of 0.60, continual studies were needed.

The length of the links in an eccentrically braced frame will dictate the behavior of the frame. Link length controls the yielding mechanism and the ultimate failure mode. For short links, the links' shear forces reach the plastic shear capacity before the end moments reach the plastic moment capacity, and the links yields in the shear, forming a shear hinges. These links are termed "shear links." For long links, the end moments reach the plastic moment capacity before the links' shear forces reach the plastic shear capacity, forming moment hinges. These links are termed moment links." In long links, flexural yielding dominates the response, and very high bending strains are required at the link ends to produce large link deformations. In a shear links, the shear force is constant along the length of the links, and the inelastic shear strain are is uniformly distributed over the length of the links. This permits the development of large inelastic link deformations without the development of excessively high local strains. However, The use of eccentrically braced steel frames for the purpose of architectural cionsiderations such as openings and doors, areis dictating the use of longer links, though. Little data areis available on the behavior of long links under cyclic loading conditions. In This paper documents the results of an experimental program is that was conducted to assess the response of moment links in eccentrically braced frames. Sixteen specimens awere tested using a cyclic load.

Structural tests were performed to investigate the structural performance of concrete-filled steel tube column using different strength steels in their flange and web with high-strength steel HSA800 and mild steel SM490, respectively. The test parameters included the strength of column flange and infill concrete, and effect of concrete infill. Connection between different grade steels were welded using the electrode appropriate for mild steel and verified its performance. To evaluate the behavior of test specimens, eccentric loading tests were performed and the results were compared with the prediction by current design codes. Axial load and moment carrying capacity of test specimens increased with the yield strength of compression flange and weld fracture occurred after the specimen shows full strength. The prediction result for axial load-bending moment relationship and effective flexural stiffness gave good agreement with the test result.
This paper aims to investigate the demountability of steel column-baseplate connections subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading. This paper presents the finite element analysis of steel column-baseplate connections under monotonic and cyclic loading. The finite element model takes into account the effects of material and geometric nonlinearities. Bauschinger and pinching effects were also included in the developed model, through which degradation of steel yield strength in cyclic loading can be well simulated. The results obtained from the finite element model are compared with the existing experimental results. It is demonstrated that the finite element model accurately predicts the initial stiffness, ultimate bending moment strength of steel column-baseplate connections. The finite element model is utilised to examine the effects of axial load, baseplate thickness, anchor bolt diameter and position on the behaviour of steel column-baseplate connections. The effects of various parameters on the demountability of steel column-baseplate connections are investigated. To achieve a demountable and reusable structure, various design parameters need to be considered. Initial stiffness and moment capacity of steel columnbaseplate connections are compared with design strengths from Eurocode 3. The comparison between finite element analysis and Eurocode 3 indicates that predictions of initial stiffness for semi-rigid connections should be developed and improved design of the connections needs to be used in engineering practice.
Finite element numerical analysis was conducted with using the knot data which has a strong influence on the prediction of capacity for the structural wood member. Wood is a orthotropic property unlike other structural materials, so orthotropic property was applied. Knot was modelled as a cylinder shape, cone shape, and cubic shape. Compressive test was carried out to investigate the failure types and to calculate ultimate strengths for the wood members. Numerical model which can reflect the member size, number of knot, location of knot, size of knot was created and analyzed. By the numerical analysis using the ultimate compressive strength, numerical stress distribution types of each specimen was compared to real failure types for the test specimen. Cylinder shape modelling might be most reasonable, according to the necessary time for the analysis, the difficulty of element meshing, and the similarity of stress transfer around knot. Moreover, according to the stress and deformation distribution for the numerical analysis, failures or cracks of real specimen were developed in the vicinity of stress concentrated section and most transformed section. Based on the those results, numerical analysis could be utilized as a useful method to analyze the performance of bending member and tensile member, if only orthotropic property and knot modelling were properly applied.
