  • UV curing was introduced via a chemical treatment by adding small amounts of a hexafunctional acrylic monomer and a photoinitiator to improve the mechanical properties of PLA. This study also employed a semi-interpenetrated structured polymer network through the process of UV-curing. The UV curing behaviors were investigated using FTIR-ATR spectroscopy and gel fraction determination. Also, the tensile strength was investigated with different hexafunctional acrylic monomer contents and UV doses. The results showed that the crosslinking of UV-induced chemically treated PLA started at a low content of hexafunctional acrylic monomer, resulting in a significant improvement of the mechanical properties compared to those of neat PLA due to crosslinking.

  • UV curable adhesives with different acrylic functionalities were synthesized for temporary bonding and debonding process in 3D multi-chip packaging process. The aim is to study various factors which have an influence on UV curing. The properties and curing behaviors were investigated by gel fraction, peel strength, probe tack, and shear adhesion failure temperature. The results show that the properties and curing behaviors are dependent on not only acrylic functionalities of binders but also UV doses and coating thickness.

  • We investigated the curing properties of cured coatings for a multi-focal UV-LED. The coatings are for LEDs that operate at multiple UV wavelengths, unlike conventional single-wavelength UV-LEDs. Using UV-LED light sources with wavelengths of 365, 395, 420, and 450 nm, we analyzed the optical characteristics such as the direction of light flux and light source. We also analyzed the curing characteristics at each UV-LED wavelength to optimize the LED for composite wavelengths. The curing performance state was predicted through computer simulation for when the multiple wavelengths of UV light sources are superimposed, and then actual LEDs were designed and fabricated. To improve the internal high-speed curing, a multi-spot module was fabricated, in which each LED is condensed, and multiple wavelengths are synthesized and condensed at the same position. The adhesive strength, surface hardness, and internal hardness of the curing agent were tested by varying the wavelength combination conditions. The surface hardening and internal hardening were compared and analyzed using a hardness tester and FT-IR analyzer. As a result, the characteristics of the surface and internal hardness were improved by a multi-spot method in which four wavelengths were overlapped in a UV-LED rather than a single wavelength.

  • To investigate in influence of photosensitizer used with benzophenone(BP) in the curing rate and physical properties of UV curable hard coating on plastic, we prepared UV curable clear and pigmented coatings with DEA, DMA, NPM and TEA as photosensitizer, respectively. The curing rate calculated from the decrease of the absorbance of acrylic double bond measured by FT-IR spectroscopy increased s follows; DEA>DMA>NPM>TEA. this order could be explained by the reactivity of diethylamino group of DEA and the ease of formation of activated complex between BP and photosensitizer during the curing process. In UV curable pigmented coatings, the order of curing rate increased as follows; DEA>DMA>TEA>NPM. It was found that the curing rate of the pigmented coating can be increased by light scattering of TiO$_2$. The hardness of coating film cured by photosensitization of DEA and DMA is higher than other photosensitizers due to the crosslinking reaction of DEA and DMA radical bound to polymer backbone.

  • Continuous photografting/crosslinking of polyethyleneglycol dimethacrylate oligomers onto cotton using a water-soluble benzophenone photoinitiator was investigated. Photografting increased with increasing irradiation dose, oligomer concentration and photoinitiator concentration. Maximum grafting efficiency of DM 400 and 600 were 83% and 79%, respectively. the photografting increased the wrinkle resistance of cotton implying surface crosslinking of cotton. bothsurface crosslinking and bulk crosslinking of cotton were accomplished via dual curing of a mixed formulation containing both a thermally curable component (BTCCA/SHP) and a UV-curable component. The wrinkle resistance of the crosslinked cotton was found to be higher when cured by thermal curing due to the facile post-polymerization of the UV active component. The presence of crosslinks in the dually crosslinked cotton was verified with FT-IR and thermogravimetric analysis.

  • A novel evaluation method is investigated for measuring the ability of acid amplification of acid amplifier. The method is based on the measurement of conductivity change by the acid generation according to UV radiation. It is found that the decrease of conductivity is caused by photopolymerization of epoxy monomer during UV curing process of ink film and the by the rate of UV curing. In this paper, the novel acid amplifiers were synthesized and measured thermal stability by means of DSC. It was found that mono-type acid amplifiers were more stable than di-type. It is possible to make the dynamical evaluation the curing rate of UV curable ink in curing process by this method.

  • In this study, a silver paste capable of UV curing without using any solvent was developed. The viscosity and viscoelasticity of the silver paste developed as a solvent-free type were measured. And after printing the pattern by screen printing, an electrode coating film was formed by UV curing. Conductivity, pencil hardness, and adhesive force of the formed electrode coating film were evaluated. Finally, the curing characteristics of the electrode coating film were evaluated by TGA and FT-IR. Summarizing these results, in terms of conductivity, adhesion, and curing characteristics, it was found that Paste (4), that is, silver paste obtained by mixing 1.2 ㎛ spherical silver powder and 50 nm silver powder at 72:8% had the best physical properties.

  • Currently, Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) composite materials are used in many industrial fields, owing to their superior stiffness and specific strength compared to metals. However, there are issues with FRP inefficiency, due to low productivity of such materials, environmental problems they pose and long curing times needed. Trying to address these issues, research was conducted towards the development of a FRP composite material with excellent properties and short production time, introducing a curing method using a UV lamp. Four types of composite materials were prepared, cured with catalyst or UV (CZ: Catalyst + ZNT 6345, CR: Catalyst + RF 1001 MV, UVZ: Photoinitiator + ZNT 6345, and UVR: Photoinitiator + RF 1001 MV). Examination of the chemical and mechanical properties of these composites showed that UV-cured materials performed better than the catalyst-cured ones. These results indicate that the production process of FRP composite materials can be simplified by using a UV lamp for curing, resulting in composite materials with the same quality, but reduced production time by about 70% compared to currently used practices. This advancement will contribute greatly to the composite material industry.

  • Conventional pad- dry-cure(thermo-fixation) process usually produces functional performance on both sides of a fabric. UV curing technique was applied to impart water- and oil-repellent finish effective only on the face of a PET knitted fabric. The preferential one-side coating, by virtue of the limited penetration of UV light, was achieved by W curing after padding of a fluorocarbon agent without special coating or printing equipments. The difference in the functional property of face and back sides was examined by measuring water and oil repellency at each side of the treated fabric. The influence of pre/post-irradiation dose and agent concentration on the performance of the finished fabrics were investigated. While increase in both resin concentration and post-irradiation did not have significant effect on the finish, UV pre-irradiation of PET fabrics caused remarkable influence presumably due to appropriate surface modification of PET fabrics required for facile wetting of the resin. The dimensional stability and color change of the UV cured fabrics measured by FAST and reflectance spectrophotometry showed significantly decreased color difference and increased percent extension compared with the samples pre-irradiated without agent application.

  • Nowadays, additive manufacturing (AM) technology is a promising process to fabricate complex shaped devices applied in medical and dental services. Among the AM processes, a DLP (digital light processing) type 3D printing process has some advantages, such as high precision, relatively low cost, etc. In this work, we propose a simple method to fabricate precise dental models using a DLP 3D printer. After 3D printing, a part is commonly post-cured using secondary UV-curing equipment for complete polymerization. However, some shrinkage occurs during the post-curing process, so we adaptively control the UV-exposure time on each layer for over- or under-curing to change the local shape-size of a part in the DLP process. From the results, the shrinkage amounts in the post-curing process vary due to the UV-dose in 3D printing. We believe that the proposed method can be utilized to fabricate dental models precisely, even with a change of the 3D CAD model.
