Phase Stability Studies of Unirradiated Al-U-10wt.%Mo Fuel at Elevated Temperature

  • The phase stability of atomized U-10wt. %Mo powder and the thermal compatibility of dispersed fuel meats at 40$0^{\circ}C$ and 50$0^{\circ}C$ have been characterized. Atomized U-10Mo powder has a good \ulcorner-U phase stability, and excellent thermal compatibility with aluminum matrix in a dispersion fuel. It is thought that the good phase stability is related to th large supersaturation of Mo atoms in the atomized particles. The reasons for the excellent thermal compatibility have been considered to be as follows. Before thermal decomposition of ${\gamma}$-U in particle, supersaturated Mo atoms at ${\gamma}$-U grain boundaries inhibit the diffusion of Al atoms. After thermal decomposition of ${\gamma}$-U into ${\gamma}$-U and U$_2$Mo, the intermetallic compound of U$_2$Mo seems to retard the penetration of Al atoms. The penetration mechanisms of aluminum atoms in the atomized particles are assumed be classified as (a) diffusion through the reacted layer between fuel particles and Al matrix leaving a kernel-like unreacted island and (b) diffusion along grain boundaries showing several unreacted islands and more reacted regions.

Thermal Compatibility of High Density U-Mo Powder Fuels Prepared by Centrifugal Atomization

  • Samples of extruded dispersions of 24 vol.% spherical U-2wt%Mo and U-10wt.%Mo powders in an aluminum matrix were annealed for over 2,000 hours at 40$0^{\circ}C$. No significant dimensional changes occurred in the U-1025.%Mo/aluminum dispersions. The U-2wt.%Mo/aluminum dispersion, however, increased in volume by 26% after 2,000 hours at 40$0^{\circ}C$. This large volume change is mainly due to the formation of voids and cracks resulting from nearly complete interdiffusion of U-Mo and aluminum. Interdiffusion between U-10wt.%Mo and aluminum was found to be minimal. The different diffusion behavior is primarily due to the fact that U-2wt.%Mo decomposes from an as-atomized metastable r-phase(bcc) solid solution into the equilibrium r-U and U$_2$Mo two-phase structure during the experiment, whereas U-10wt.%Mo retains the metastable r-phase structure after the 2,000 hours anneal and thereby displays superior thermal compatibility with aluminum compared to U-2wt.%Mo. In addition, the molybdenium supersaturated in U-10wt.%Mo particles inhibits the diffusion of aluminum atoms along the grain boundary into the particle. Also, the dissolution of only a few Mo atoms in UAL$_3$ retards the formation of the intermediate phase, as Mo atoms need to migrate from new intermetallic compounds to unreacted islands.

  • Since the beginning of 2000, the ubiquitous technology rapidly has been at center of public concerns, and application of the ubiquitous technology is expanding in Korea with U-City as the center. U-City is currently planned and built by local governments, but the applicable range of the ubiquitous technology should be expanded in the future to build U-Territory and U-Land projects. As a part of this, U-forest should also be implemented, and that now is the time to gain support in policy and systematic initiative. Therefore, this study defines U-Forest concept to implement valuable national resources, healthy land environment, and pleasant green space by using ubiquitous technology as an effective way to produce, manage, use, and distribute the forest. In order to establish strategy for U-Forest, it has considered basic forest plan, k-Forest, and FGIS projects, and has drawn a service model pertaining to them. Also, it has proposed the need to establish the basic plan for U-Forest, and suggested details to include in the plan.

  • The ubiquitous city construction act worked as an institutional basis for the U-City projects which were actively driven in the new urban areas until 2010. However, the country's urban policies which were recently changed focusing on revitalization of the existing towns and urban regeneration led to the increased demand for revision of the u-City law with a strong character of procedural law mainly for the new urban areas. Therefore, this study, taking into account the changes of the country's urban policies and the conditions related to u-City, established the direction of revision on the u-City law as the diversification of the u-City projects, reinforcement of u-City management operation and the supports for the u-City projects, and presented the consequent action plans. This study aims to review the problems with the current u-City law and the improvement plan from the practical point of view for reflecting the country's urban policy flow and demand. It is expected that the result of this study will be able to be utilized as a basic material for supporting the continuous development and expansion of u-City by law and system.

  • The purpose of this study is to construct the System Dynamics Model that can analyze urban spatial and temporal change and suggest the policy directions applicable to U-City Planning in Busan based on the SD model. It reviews previous literatures to elicit U-City issues and performs the case study to simulate urban spatial and temporal changes in Busan. The elicited results are connected into the policy directions of U-City planning. It emphasizes the necessity of business model suggestion based on U-City technology and industry not a tool, the U-City model construction that linkages and integrates the existing cities and new cities, and the excavation of U-City service model reflecting social and demographic changes.

  • Global attractivity and oscillatory behavior of the following nonlinear impulsive parabolic differential equation which is a general form of many population models $$\array{\{{{\frac {{\partial}u(t,x)}{{\partial}t}=\Delta}u(t,x)-{\delta}u(t,x)+f(u(t-\tau,x)),\;t{\neq}t_k,\\u(t^+_k,x)-u(t_k,x)=g_k(u(t_k,x)),\;k{\in}I_\infty,}\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;(*)$$ are considered. Some new sufficient conditions for global attractivity and oscillation of the solutions of (*) with Neumann boundary condition are established. These results no only are true but also improve and complement existing results for (*) without diffusion or impulses. Moreover, when these results are applied to the Nicholson's blowflies model and the model of Hematopoiesis, some new results are obtained.

  • This study sets the boundary of U-City industry based on expert surveys. Based on this U-City industry boundary, an appropriate inter-industry analysis is performed. The result shows production inducement coefficients, value added inducement coefficients, employment & enter employment inducement coefficients, influence coefficients and induction coefficients. Based on these coefficients, overall characteristics and spillover effects of U-City industry are examined. The result of this study shows that U-City industry has bigger value added-induced effects and employee-induced effects than other industry. The result also shows that U-City industry also has a great forward linkage effect. This study has a meaning that could be used to make political decisions as a basic data.

Species Diversity and Seasonal Changes of Dominant Ulva Species (Ulvales, Ulvophyceae) in Mikawa Bay, Japan, Deduced from ITS2 rDNA Region Sequences

  • Frequent occurrences of green tides caused by Ulva species (Ulvales, Ulvophyceae) associated with eutrophication along enclosed coasts are currently causing environmental problems in coastal ecosystems. In addition, increasing intercontinental introductions of coastal marine organisms, including Ulva, are also a serious issue. However, due to the considerable morphological plasticity of this genus, the taxonomy of Ulva species based on morphological studies is problematic. Therefore, in order to elucidate the species diversity and seasonal changes of the dominant Ulva species in Mikawa Bay, central Honshu, Japan, we made seasonal collections of Ulva species at seven localities, and identified the dominant species using the ITS2 rDNA region sequences. We identified the following nine taxa as common Ulva species in the area: 1) Ulva pertusa Kjellman; 2) U. ohnoi Hiraoka et Shimada; 3) U. linza L.; 4) U. californica Wille; 5) U. flexuosa Wulfen; 6) U. fasciata Delile; 7) U. compressa L.; 8) U. armoricana Dion et al.; 9) U. scandinavica Bliding. Among the species, U. pertusa was most common and dominant from spring to summer, and U. ohnoi from autumn to winter. Ulva californica and U. scandinavica have not been reported before from Japan.

THE EFFECT OF SI-RICH LAYER COATING ON U-MO VS. AL INTERDIFFUSION

  • Si-rich-layer-coated U-7 wt%Mo plates were prepared in order to evaluate the diffusion barrier performance of the Si-rich layer in U-Mo vs. Al interdiffusion. Pure Si powder was used for coating the U-Mo plates by annealing at $900^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under vacuum of approximately 1 Pa. Si-rich layers containing more than 60 at% of Si were formed on U-7 wt%Mo plates. Diffusion couple tests were conducted in a muffle furnace at $560-600^{\circ}C$ under vacuum using Si-rich-layer-coated U-Mo plates and pure Al plates. Diffusion couple tests using uncoated U-Mo plates and Al-(0, 2 or 5 wt%)Si plates were also conducted for comparison. Si-rich-layer coatings were more effective in suppressing the interaction during diffusion couple tests between coated U-Mo plate and Al, when compared with U-Mo vs. Al-Si diffusion couples, since only small amounts of Al in the coating could be found after the diffusion couple tests. Si-rich-layer-coated U-7wt%Mo particles were also prepared using the same technique for U-7 wt%Mo plates to observe the microsturctures of the coated particles.
