This study was done to investigate the relationship between ultrasonograph fat density (ULFD) using objective measurement and serum enzymes for testing liver function in 101 healthy adults(43 males and 58 females). Average serum enzyme activities in males and females were GOT27.111U/L and 22.46IU/L, GPT 34.06IU/L and 18.501U/L, and ${\gamma}$-GTP 37.67IU/L and 17.201U/L, respectively. Males showed significantly higher activities of GPT and ${\gamma}$-GTP than females. ULFD of the obese group (BMI$\geq$25) was significantly higher than that of the nonobese group. GOT, GPT, and ${\gamma}$-GTP tended to be high in the obese group. GPT and ${\gamma}$-GTP of the high TG group (TG$\geq$170) tended to be markedly high for males, but not for females. GPT was positively correlated with ULFD, body weight , and weight-to-height, ratio, and ${\gamma}$-GTP was positively correlated with body weight, weight-to-height ratio. BNI, and KI. ULFD and ${\gamma}$-GTP were positively correlated with serum TG. These results suggests that , among serum enzymes for testing liver function, GPT has a close relationship with ULFD using objective measurement, while GOT does not. Also , ${\gamma}$-GTP has a close relationship with parameters for obesity.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of auricular acupressure therapy on the upper extremity function, perceived health status and Activities of Daily Living for rehabilitation among stroke patients at home. Methods: As a quasi-experimental study, non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Data were collected from August 1st to September 31st, 2012. Participants were 28 (Experimental 17, Control 11) stroke patients at home. Using the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program, data were analysed by the $x^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results: Upper extremity function (U=28.00, p=.001) and activities of daily living (U=47.50, p=.029) were significantly higher in the experimental group compared to the control group. However, perceived health status was not significantly different between the two group. Conclusion: This study proved that auricular acupressure therapy was effective for upper extremity function and activities of daily living among stroke patients at home.
The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of a nursing intervention using sensory stimulation in dysphagic patients. Quasi-experimental with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. 15 patients of each group were assigned for this study, who were hospitalized in the oriental medicine hospital of K. University. Specific stimulation plans were devised based on a dysfunctional area of the subjects. For each modality, subjects were systematically stimulated for 30 minutes, in the experimental group prior to each meal and 3 times per day for a week. The data were analyzed by SPSS PC program using $X^2$-test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank test and Mann-Whitney U test. The results of this study are as follows : 1. The tongue control score of the experimental group is greater than that of the control group(u=52.0, p=.007). 2. The score of chewing ability, lip control, swallowing ability of the experimental group is greater than that of the control group. But no difference is statistically seen between the experimental group and control group. Therefore, this study shows that sensory stimulation using icing, quick stretch, etc., was effective in improving or oropharyngeal function in patients with dysphagia.
Objectives : This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Jaeumgeonbi-tang extract on indomethacin-induced gastric mucosal lesions of mice. Methods : Experimental groups were classified into non-treatment group (CON group), non-administered group (GE group), misoprostol administered group (MA group) and Jaeumgeonbi-tang extract administered group (JG group). This study examined the morphological change, distribution of mast cells, mucous secreted cells and apoptotic cells, BrdU, COX-1, Hsp70, NF-κB p50, PKC, COX-2 and TNF-α of gastric mucosa. Results : 1. The hemorrhagic erosion of gastric mucosa and infiltrated mast cells were reduced in the MA and JG groups. 2. PNA reaction and mucous secreted cells were increased in the MA and JG groups. 3. The distribution of apoptotic cells, Hsp70, NF-κB p50, PKC, COX-2 and TNF-α were increased in the gastroinflammation elicitated group, but decreased in the MA and JG groups. 4. The MA and JG groups showed increase on COX-1, BrdU. Conclusions : Jaeumgeonbi-tang extract had excellent effects on indomethacin-induced gastric mucosal lesions.
Objective: To evaluate the ability of serum anti-M$\ddot{u}$llerian hormone (AMH), FSH, and age to clinically predict ovarian response to controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) in IVF patients with endometriosis. Methods: We evaluated 91 COH cycles, including 43 cycles with endometriosis (group I) and 48 cycles with male factor infertility (group II) from January to December, 2010. Patients were classified into study groups based on their surgical history of endometriosis-group Ia (without surgical history, n=16), group Ib (with a surgical history, n=27). Results: The mean age was not significantly different between group I and group II. However, AMH and FSH were significantly different between group I and group II ($1.9{\pm}1.9$ ng/mL vs. $4.1{\pm}2.9$ ng/mL, $p$ <0.01; $13.1{\pm}7.2$ mIU/mL vs. $8.6{\pm}3.3$ mIU/mL, $p$ <0.01). Furthermore, the number of retrieved oocytes and the number of matured oocytes were significantly lower in group I than in group II. In group II, AMH and FSH as well as age were significant predictors of retrieved oocytes on univariate analysis. Only the serum AMH level was a significant predictor of poor ovarian response in women with endometriosis. Conclusion: Serum AMH may be a better predictor of the ovarian response of COH in patients with endometriosis than basal FSH or age. AMH level can be considered a useful clinical predictor of poor ovarian response in endometriosis patients.
Purpose: This study aims to investigate if 2D analysis method is applicable to analysis of CBCT by comparing measuring points of CBCT with those of Adjusted 2D Lateral Cephalogram (Adj-Ceph) with magnification adjusted to 100% and finding out at which landmarks the difference in position appear. Materials and methods: CBCT data and Adj-Ceph (100% magnification) data from 50 adult patients have been extracted as research objects, and the horizontal (Y axis) and vertical (Z axis) coordinates of landmarks were compared. Landmarks have been categorized into 4 groups by the position and whether they are bilaterally overlapped. Paired t-test was used to compare differences between Adj-Ceph and CBCT. Results: Significant difference was found at 11 landmarks including Group B (S, Ar, Ba, PNS), Group C (Po, Or, Hinge axis, Go) and Group D (U1RP, U6CP, L6CP) in the horizontal (Y) axis while all the landmarks in vertical (Z) axis showed significant difference (P<.05). As a result of landmark difference analysis, a meaningful difference with more than 1 mm at 13 landmarks were indentifed in the horizontal axis. In the vertical axis, significant difference over 1 mm was detected from every landmark except Sella. Conclusion: Using the conventional lateral cephalometric measurements on CBCT is insufficient. A new 3D analysis or a modified 2D analysis adjusted on 19 landmarks of the vertical axis and 13 of the horizontal axis are needed when implementing CBCT diagnosis.
This study was conducted to investigate the anti-diabetic activity of Kocat-D1, which is widely used in traditional medicine to treat diabetes in Shandong, China. Sprague Dawley rats (8 weeks of age) were separated into 4 groups: a normal control, streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat group (DM control), Kocat-D1-1 (diabetic rat treated with 0.25 g/kg/day hot water extract), and Kocat-D1-2 (diabetic rat treated with 1 g/kg/day hot water extract). After eight weeks of treatment, the fasting blood glucose levels of the Kocat-D1-1 ($334.3{\pm}32.9\;mg/dL$) and Kocat-D1-2 group ($259.5{\pm}35.0\;mg/dL$) were significantly lower when compared to the DM control group ($451{\pm}42.6\;mg/dL$). Furthermore, the levels of glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT), albumin and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in the serum of the Kocat-D1-2 group were significantly normalized when compared to the DM control group. However, significant differences were not observed between the Kocat-D1-1 group and the DM control group. Histochemical staining of the liver of the Kocat-D1-2 group revealed no fat accumulation. The insulin level was significantly upregulated in the Kocat-D1-2 group ($0.13{\pm}0.02\;ng/mL$) when compared to the DM control group ($0.05{\pm}0.04\;ng/mL$). The relative volume of $\beta$-cells in the pancreas of the Kocat-D1-2 group ($49.4{\pm}4.2%$) also increased significantly when compared to the DM control group ($12.9{\pm}7.9%$). These results suggest that Kocat-D1 exerts an anti-hyperglycemic effect through the enhancement of insulin secretion.
Bacillus thuringiensis was mutagenized with UV light irradiation and nitrosoguanidine. Twenty-four tem perature-sensitive ts mutants were isolated at 42$^{\circ}C$ and classified into two groups by growth on nutrient agar at 42$^{\circ}C$. First is the lethal group, which did not grow at the nonpermissive temperature, the second is the reduced group whose growth was restricted from one-half to one-fourth, Thirteen ts mutants belong to the lethal group and eleven ts mutants belong to the reduced group. Auxotrophic mutant, A-N28 required five amino acids as growth factors, A-N65 also five amino acids, A-N92 seven, A-N115 four and A-N156 three. Bacillus thuringiensis wild type is resistant to penicillin, ampicillin, and cephalothin. The ts-Ul7l, A-N92 and A-Nl15 are sensitive to the three antibiotics. The ts -U601, -U603, -U604 and -Ul71 did not grow at the permissive temperature after temperature-shifting from 42$^{\circ}C$. Four auxotrophic mutants (A-N38, A-N65, A-N92 and A-Nl15) did not form spores in their cells.
