The sensitivity of the typhoon track and intensity simulation to physics schemes of the global model are examined for the typhoon Bolaven and Tembin cases by using the Global/Regional Integrated Model System-Global Model Program (GRIMs-GMP) with the physics package version 2.0 of the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems. Microphysics, Cloudiness, and Planetary boundary Layer (PBL) parameterizations are changed and the impact of each scheme change to typhoon simulation is compared with the control simulation and observation. It is found that change of microphysics scheme from WRF Single-Moment 5-class (WSM5) to 1-class (WSM1) affects to the typhoon simulation significantly, showing the intensified typhoon activity and increased precipitation amount, while the effect of the prognostic cloudiness and PBL enhanced mixing scheme is not noticeable. It appears that WSM1 simulates relatively unstable and drier atmospheric structure than WSM5, which is induced by the latent heat change and the associated radiative effect due to not considering ice cloud. And WSM1 results the enhanced typhoon intensity and heavy rainfall simulation. It suggests that the microphysics is important to improve the capability for typhoon simulation of a global model and to increase the predictability of medium range forecast.

The purpose of this study is to find out the change of statistical characteristics of typhoons affecting the Korean Peninsula. For this purpose, we analyzed the occurrence frequency of typhoon for 50 years (1954-2003) and change of air temperature and sea surface temperature near the Korean Peninsula in the same period. We classified typhoon tracks affecting the Korean Peninsula, and analyzed their trends and the amount of damage by typhoon. While the annual occurrence frequency of typhoon in the western North Pacific gradually decreased, its frequency affecting the Korean Peninsula increased. In addition, the occurrence location migrated northward. This coincides with the increase in air temperature and sea surface temperature around the Korean Peninsula. Typhoon tracks affecting the Korean Peninsula were classified into 7 types. Among them, the occurrence frequency of type 6 and 7 has increased. Although the occurrence frequency is low in type 2, the amount of damage by typhoon and occurrence frequency are increasing recently.
Lately, more frequent typhoons cause extensive flood and wind damage throughout the summer season. In this respect, this study aims to develop a probabilistic clustering model that uses both typhoon genesis location and trajectories. The proposed model was applied to the 197 typhoon events that made landfall in the Korean peninsula from 1951 to 2012. We evaluate the performance of the proposed clustering model through a simulation study based on synthetic typhoon trajectories. The seven distinguished clusters for typhoons affecting Korean peninsula were identified. It was found that most of typhoon genesis originated from a remote position ($10^{\circ}{\sim}20^{\circ}N$, $120^{\circ}{\sim}150^{\circ}E$) near the Equator. Cluster, type B can be regarded as a major track due to the fact that its frequency is approximately about 25.4% out of 197 events and its direct association with strong positive rainfall anomalies.

Tide-surge interaction during typhoon periods has been analyzed. The quantitative analysis of the Chi-square test shows that the interaction is most prominent at the Southwestern coast whereas the Western and the Southeastern regions are not. Patterns of surge type were divided into two groups, that is, steep type and mild type. Then, the interaction was turned out to be more prominent for mild type data. The weak interaction at the Western region is considered due to negative surges when the south-track typhoons attack. However, the interaction is remarkable when the west-track typhoons attack. The weak interaction at the Southeastern coast is, on the other hand, considered due to abundance of the steep type typhoons. Thus, inundation risk would be so apprehensive at that region because large-scale surge might be caused even at high tide.

Numerical simulations of the storm surge and waves induced by the Typhoon Kong-Rey incident on the south coast of Korea in 2018 are conducted using the JMA-MSM weather field provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency, and the calculated surge heights are compared with the time history observed at harbours along the south-east coast. For the waves occurring coincidentally with the storm surges the calculated significant wave heights are compared with the data measured using the wave buoys operated by the KHOA (Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency) and the KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration), and the data observed at AWAC stations of the KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology). Additional simulations are also performed based on the pressure and wind fields obtained using the best track information provided by the JTWC (Joint Typhoon Warning Center) of the United States, and the results are compared and analyzed. Based on the results of this study it is found that the reliable weather fields are essential for the accurate simulation of storm surges and waves.

Numerical simulations of the storm surge and the wave induced by the Typhoon Sanba incident on the south coast of Korea in 2012 are conducted using the JMA-MSM forecast weather field, NCEP-CFSR reanalysis weather field, ECMWF-ERA5 reanalysis weather field, and the pressure and wind fields obtained using the best track information provided by JTWC. The calculated surge heights are compared with the time history observed at harbors along the coasts of Korea. For the waves the calculated significant wave heights are compared with the data measured using the wave buoys and the underwater pressure type wave gauge. As a result the JMA-MSM and the NCEP-CFSR weather fields give the highest reliability. The ECMWF-ERA5 gives in general surge and wave heights weaker than the measured. The ECMWF-ERA5, however, reproduces the best convergence belt formed in front of the typhoon. The weather field obtained using JTWC best track information gives the worst agreement.

The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of disaster associated with typhoon passed through the sea areas excluding the South Sea around the Korean Peninsula. First, Korean peninsula-affecting typhoons were divided into their track patterns of passing through the Korean West Sea and East Sea based on typhoon data from 1951 to 2006 provided by Regional Specialized Meteorological Center(RSMC)-Tokyo. Then, annual and monthly frequency and intensity of typhoon in each pattern was examined. In particular, typhoon related damages during the period of 1973 to 2006 were analyzed in each case. Results showed that since early 1970, in the West Sea case, typhoon becomes weaker without significant change in frequency, while in the East Sea case, it becomes stronger with an increasing trend. It is also found that the high amount of typhoon damage results from the submergence of houses and farmlands in the East Sea case, while it is due to the breakdown of houses, ships, roads and bridges in the West Sea case. In addition, it is revealed from the analysis of rainfall and maximum wind speed data associated with typhoon disasters that the main cause of occurring typhoon disasters seem to be qualitatively related to strong wind in the West Sea case and heavy rainfall in the East Sea case.

During the period of every summer to early autumn seasons, ships have been wrecked or grounded from effect of a typhoon in the waters around Korean Peninsular. Typhoon Rusa killed more than 100 people in September 2002. Super Typhoon Maemi passed southeast of South Korea in September 12-13, 2003, with gale winds blowing at a record 60 m/s and caused much ship groundings, collisions and sinkings over 3000 in dockyards, harbors and places of refuge. These are things that could have been prevented had there merely been prior warning. The aim of this study is to examine what effect these typhoons had on occurrence characteristics of the maritime accidents in South Korea. In this work, records of marine accidents caused by a typhoon are investigated for the period from 1962 to 2002. The distribution is also compared with the trajectories of typhoons, passed during the 1990-2003. It is shown that attack frequency of typhoon and number of marine accidents is the highest in August. We use the track data of Maemi such as central pressure, maximum sustained wind speed and area of each 15m/s and 25m/s winds as a case study to draw a map as a risk index.
Global warming and rapid climate change have long affected the characteristics of typhoons in the Northwest Pacific, which has induced increasing devastating disasters along the coastal regions of the Korean peninsula. Synthetic Aperature Radar (SAR), as one of the microwave sensors, makes it possible to produce high-resolution sea surface wind field around the typhoon under cloudy atmospheric conditions, which has been impossible to obtain the winds from satellite optical and infrared sensors. The Geophysical Model Functions (GMFs) for sea surface wind retrieval from SAR data requires the input of wind direction, which should be based on the accurate estimation of the center of the typhoon. This study estimated the typhoon centers using Sentinel-1A images to improve the problem of typhoon center detection method and to reflect it in retrieving the sea surface wind. The results were validated by comparing with the typhoon best track data provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), and also by using infrared images of Himawari-8 satellite. The initial center position of the typhoon was determined by using VH polarization, thereby reducing the possibility of error. The detected center showed a difference of 23.76 km on average with the best track data of the four typhoons provided by the KMA and JMA. Compared to the typhoon center estimated by Himawari-8 satellite, the results showed an average spatial variation of 11.80 km except one typhoon located near land with a large difference of 58.73 km. This result suggests that high-resolution SAR images can be used to estimate the center and retrieve sea surface wind around typhoons.

Linear-tracked typhoons were simulated to investigate the effect of parameter sensitivity at Gyeongnam coastal zone. To do this, appropriateness of the linear-tracked MAEMI(0314) was tested and 175 scenarios were simulated on the basis of virtual MAEMI. The results show surge heights are relatively large at Masan and Tongyeong, and it can be attributed to topographical effects. At Masan, 2.5 m-surge height is probable with the same intensity but slightly different track from the real typhoon MAEMI. At the other stations, surge heights induced by real MAEMI are nearly same as the maximum heights of the virtual typhoons, which indicates the real track of the typhoon MAEMI was almost the most severe one. Surge heights caused by the barometric effect are higher than those by the wind effect, and the former effect shows the maximum at the eye of typhoon.
