  • I collected the cases of CNG vehicle accidents which had happened for 30 years and analyzed the causes of the accidents according to each type of cylinders. There are about six accidents including three cylinder explosion accidents due to bad heat treatment, one composite damage, one CNG vehicle fire, and one fuel piping accident owing to the poor maintenance. When looking into the cylinder types involved in the accidents and the causes, 29% of the cylinder accidents are Type I and 24% Type IV, 16% Type II, and 14% Type III. 37% of the accidents are caused by the defects of the raw materials and the errors of a manufacturing process, 16% by the stress corrosion cracking as a result of the repetitive use, 15% by the cylinder's explosion on account of the malfunction of PRD(Pressure Relief Device) and the overpressure. The remainders of the causes are fire and unknown causes. Therefore, cylinder manufacturers have to strengthen quality management of raw materials and manufacturing process and painting regardless of each type of cylinder. Also bus operators need to make an effort to keep safety condition through every day check.

  • To design and estimate material failures of Type III pressure vessels, which have excellent stability and performance, various modeling techniques have been introduced. This paper provided a hybrid modeling technique composed of ply-based modeling for a cylinder part and laminate-base modeling technique for a dome part for enhancing modeling efficiency. The ply-based modeling technique provided accurate ply stresses directly for predicting material failure, on the other hand, additional manipulations in stress calculations, which may cause some errors, were needed for the case of the laminate-based modeling technique. The ply stresses in fiber, transverse and in-plane shear directions were compared with the corresponding material strengths to predict material failure.

  • This study was conducted to judge requalification of cylinders by assessing composite flaws such as scratches, cuts, and gouges damaging on the composite of Type III cylinders for compressed natural gas vehicles. As a result of the flaw tolerance test, all specimens have satisfied with minimum requirement cycles according to damage levels based on ISO 19078 and cyclic performance for pressure showed beyond twenty thousands in damage level 1 and 2, and did eighteen thousands to twenty-one thousands in damage level 3. Eight of twelve specimens failed the test due to composite flaws and the rest of the cylinders failed regardless of flaws. The results of Finite Element Method followed by the computer simulation indicated that the stress of 79.5 MPa calculated on the flaw model of $1.25\;mm{\times}200\;mm$ and the stress of 66.6 MPa on the non-flaw model when the service pressure applied to inside of cylinder. The difference between the models is about 19.37%. We concluded that this difference influences fatigue life and this flaw model is a critical value affecting cyclic performance of cylinders.

  • In this study, we calculated gas flow fields and distribution of fuel droplet and mass fraction using the CONCHAS-SPRAY code which modified to execute in IBM PC and changed three important factors, injection rate pattern (BASIC, I, II, III), different bowl shape and spray type. Especially vortices which be influenced by fuel-air mixing process, evaporation and flame propagation are generated more strongly in the bowl-piston type combustion chamber than in the flat-piston type. As the spray type changes, it is found that conical type produced large and strong vortices and fuel droplets are effictively diffused into the entire combustion chamber. As the injection rate pattern changes I, II, III based on BASIC type, we confirmed that End-of-Injection Effect strongly influence on droplets life time.

  • Although the rupture pressure is evaluated from remaining strength when a flaw is defected to cylinder surface, but the rupture pressure can be not easy to estimate for the composite cylinders. In this study, the area capacity method is developed for the type-3 cylinders that is based on the result applied area capacity method of type-1 cylinders. And the reliability is validated by bursting test with artificial flaw at the cylinder surface. The predicted data of area capacity method and experimental results have very similar tendency. This method and results will be a very important records in field of rupture pressure estimations.

  • Stress intensity factors for the circumferential surface crack of a long composite cylinder under torsion is investigated. The problem is formulated as a singular integral equation of the first kind with a Cauchy type kernel using the integral transform technique. The mode III stress intensity factors at the crack tips are presented when (a) the inner crack tip is away from the interface and (b) the inner crack tip is at the interface.

  • AILU type preconditioners for a two-dimensional combined P2P1 finite element formulation of the interaction of rigid cylinder with incompressible fluid flow have been devised and tested by solving fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. The FSI code simulating the interaction of a rigid cylinder with an unsteady flow is based on P2P1 mixed finite element formulation coupled with combined formulation. Four different preconditioners were devised for the two-dimensional combined P2P1 finite element formulation extending the idea of Nam et al., which was proposed for the preconditioning of a P2P1 mixed finite element formulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. It was found that PC-III or PC-IV among them perform well with respect to computational memory and convergence rate for some bench-mark problems.

  • ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a power transmission system controlled with electric field strength. In this paper(Part III), the behavior of ER clutch under proper conditions was investigated experimentally and compared to theoretical analyses developed from Part I, II. Considering the optimum design concept proposed from Part I, the concentric cylinder type of ER clutch was designed and the experimental apparatus for the performance test was constructed. The comparisons made indicated that the power transmission model of ER clutch and the temperature rise model of ER fluid developed from Part I, II were acceptable for engineering design calculations.culations.

  • This paper described the structural design and the fabrication procedure of KSR-III composite pressure tank. The type of the composite pressure tank was COPV(Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessel). A non-load sharing liner was made of aluminum 6061-0 and the liner provided a helium gas seal. The composite pressure tank was winded using T700 carbon/epoxy on the liner. Because the aluminum liner was thin, multiple cure cycles were applied to the filament winding technique. The multiple cure cycles prevented the liner-cylinder from losing a circular shape. A fitting force at the metallic boss was spread to the carbon fiber by a boss ring. The boss ring also prevented a local deformation at the boss part.

  • For the experimental measurement of instantaneous surface temperature of the piston of the DI mono cylinder diesel engine, the instantaneous temperature proves, data acquisition system, and grass-hopper type linkage system were developed. The instantaneous temperatures on the piston bowl, crown, lands and skirt were measured and analyzed, and the following conclusions were derived ; (i) The crank angle for the maximum instantaneous temperature during one cycle varies and moves back and forth by the measuring positions and engine speeds. (ii) The engine speeds, the positions of the measuring points and the cooling water temperature had an effect on the instantaneous temperature amplitude. (iii) The instantaneous temperature suing phenomena appeared on the temperature profiles of the piston crown, top and second land of ring, but on the temperature profiles of the parts of the third land of the fing and skirt, they didn't appear, (iv) The isothermal lines in the piston were acquired through the operation of the finite elements method using the measured temperatures as the boundary conditions.
