In this study, the response surface method and experimental design were applied as an alternative to conventional methods for the optimization of coagulation tests. A central composite design, with 4 axial points, 4 factorial points and 5 replicates at the center point were used to build a model for predicting and optimizing the coagulation process. Mathematical model equations were derived by computer simulation programming with a least squares method using the Minitab 15 software. In these equations, the removal efficiencies of turbidity and total organic carbon (TOC) were expressed as second-order functions of two factors, such as alum dose and coagulation pH. Statistical checks (ANOVA table, $R^2$ and $R^2_{adj}$ value, model lack of fit test, and p value) indicated that the model was adequate for representing the experimental data. The p values showed that the quadratic effects of alum dose and coagulation pH were highly significant. In other words, these two factors had an important impact on the turbidity and TOC of treated water. To gain a better understanding of the two variables for optimal coagulation performance, the model was presented as both 3-D response surface and 2-D contour graphs. As a compromise for the simultaneously removal of maximum amounts of 92.5% turbidity and 39.5% TOC, the optimum conditions were found with 44 mg/L alum at pH 7.6. The predicted response from the model showed close agreement with the experimental data ($R^2$ values of 90.63% and 91.43% for turbidity removal and TOC removal, respectively), which demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach in achieving good predictions, while minimizing the number of experiments required.
To investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of a two-dimensional buoyant surface jet, the most important factors of the numerical analysis are the evaluation of the free surface and the turbulence transportation under the stratification. In present study, a numeriacal simulation model used with the semi-implicit method for pressure-linked equations (SIMPLE), the non-hydrostatic approximation and the algebraic stress model (ASM) is applied to investigate the vertical structure of internal flow hydrodynamically. The ASM enables to take account of anisotropy of turbulence, the damping effects of the density interface, and the free surface on the turbulence structure accurately. The ASM tested produces better agreement than the $\kappa-\varepsilon$ model with measurements by Nakatsuji (1984) on the flow development and turbulence structure. Applicability of the ASM to a two-dimensional buoyant surface jet is examined through comparison with experimental data.

The fracture mechanics analysis of surface cracks in plates and cylindrical geometries is important in the integrity evaluation of flawed structural components. The objective of this paper is, thus, to numerically investigate an interaction effect of two surface cracks in plate and cylindrical geometries. The effect of crack spacing on the magnitude of the stress intensity factor(K) is investigated using the line-spring model. For the case of a finite plate under uniaxial loading, the effect of crack spacing on the K values is negligible. However, for the case of a cylinder under moderate internal pressure, a significant increase in K values is observed at the deepest point of the surface crack.
When analyzing field or optimizing the shape of electrode in three dimensional space by using the surface charge method, we need to divide finely the surface of electrode into surface element like triangle or rectangle. In this case, there exist any variables in field analysis or field optimization. In particular, smoothness on the surface of optimized shape is not good. Recently, A paper is published where introducing NURB curve to field analysis and field optimization about two dimensional space model and axial symmetric three dimensional space model results in reduced variables, enhenced accuracy and improved smoothness. NURB curve has some useful properties like continuity, controllability and locality. Therefore in this paper, in order to improve the demerits of the established optimization method for three dimensional space models, the NURB surface that has same properties in common with NURB curve is used to analyze and optimize simple model.

This paper presents a study of surface roughness prediction model by orthogonal design in turning operation. Regression analysis technique has been used to study the effects of the cutting parameters such as cutting speed, feed depth of cut, and nose radius on surface roughness. An effect of interaction between two parameters on surface roughness has also been investigated. The experiment has been conducted using coated tungsten carbide inserts without cutting fluid. The reliability of the surface roughness model as a function of the cutting parameters has been estimated. The results show that the experimental design used in turning process is a method to estimate the effects of cutting parameters on sur-face roughness.
The surface structure of the adsorption site for the identification of active sites involved in the Ziegler-Natta catalyst was studied by surface science techniques. As an example of a real catalyst, TiCl3 single crystals were prepared in a gradient furnace designed for this study and characterized by Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) and Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) under ultrahigh vacuum condition. The chlorine covered Ti (0001) surface was employed as a model catalyst for the study of Ziegler-Natta catalyst. The diffuse LEED (DLEED) technique for the surface structural determination was applied to this disordered chlorine adsorbed on Ti (0001) surface. The diffuse scattering intensities were measured by a TV-computer method using a low light level video camera. From an analysis of two catalyst systems, the informations for the surface structure of the model catalyst surfaces were derived.
RANS-based CFD analysis is widely applied in various engineering fields, including practical hydraulic engineering, due to its high computational efficiency. However, problems of non-physical behavior in the analysis of two phase flow, such as free surfaces, have long been raised. The two-equation turbulence models used in general RANS-based analysis were developed for single phase flow and simulate unrealistically high turbulence energy at the interface where there are abrupt changes in fluid density. To solve this issue, one of the methods recently developed is the buoyancy-modified turbulence model, which has been partially validated in coastal engineering, but has not been applied to open channel flows. In this study, the applicability of the buoyancy-modified turbulence model is evaluated using the VOF method in the open-source program OpenFoam. The results of the uniform flow showed that both the buoyancy-modified k-𝜖 model and the buoyancy-modified k-ω SST model effectively simulated the reduction of turbulence energy near the free surface. Specifically, the buoyancy-modified k-ω SST model accurately simulated the vertical velocity distribution. Additionally, the model is applied to dam-break flows to examine cases with significant surface variation and cavity formation. The simulation results show that the buoyancy-modified turbulence models produce varying results depending on the VOF method and shows non-physical behavior different from experimental results. While the buoyancy-modified turbulence model is applicable in cases with stable surface shapes, it still has limitations in general application when there are rapid changes in the free surface. It is concluded that appropriate adjustments to the turbulence model are necessary for flows with rapid surface changes or cavity formation.

A finite difference lattice Boltzmann model which allows us to simulate gas-liquid two-phase flows with large density difference, for instance, 800 times for air and water is considered. Two-particle model is used and the density difference is introduced by changing the acceleration according to the fluid density. Numerical measurement of surface tension agrees well with theoretical predictions. Simulations of two-phase phenomenon for phase-transition is carried out, showing applicability of the model for two-phase flows. The two-dimensional cavitating flow around a board set up in the fluid way is also simulated. As a result, it was confirmed that the FDLB method with two-particle model was effective in numerical simulation of cavitating flow and the bubble periodically grew up at the low pressure area behind the board, in which the fluid condition was influenced by the cavitation number.

In many industries, particle packing is adopted quite frequently. In the particle packing process, the Discrete Element Method (DEM) can analyze the multi-collision of particles efficiently. Two types of contact models are frequently used for the DEM. One is the linear spring model, which has the fastest calculation time, and the other is the Hertz-Mindlin model, which is the most frequently used contact model employing the DEM. Meanwhile, very tiny particles in the micrometer order are used in modern industries. In the micro length order, surface force is important to decreased particle size. To consider the effect of surface force in this study, we performed a simulation with the Hertz-Mindlin model and added the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory depicting surface force with surface energy. In addition, three contact models were compared with several parameters. As a result, it was found that the JKR model has larger residual stress than the general contact models because of the pull-off force. We also validated that surface force can influence particle behavior if the particles are small.
An one dimensional atmosphere-canopy-soil interaction model is developed to estimate of the heat budget parameter in the atmospheric boundary layer. The canopy model is composed of the three balance equations of energy, temperature, moisture at ground surface and canopy layer with three independent variables of Tf(foliage temperature), Tg(ground temperature), and qg(ground specific humidity). The model was verilied by comparative study with OSUID(Oregon State University One Dimensional Model) proved in HAPEX-MOBILHY experiment. Also we applied this model in two dimensional land-sea breeze circulation. According to the results of this study, surface characteristics considering canopy acted importantly upon the simulation of meso-scale circulation. The factors which used in the numerical experiment are as follows ; the change for a sort of soil(sand and peat), the change for shielding factor, and the change for a kind of vegetation.
