Detecting the damage of indeterminate trusses is of major importance in the literature. This paper proposes a quick approach in this regard, utilizing a precise mathematical approach based on Finite Element Method. Different to a general two-step method defined in the literature essentially based on optimization approach, this method consists of three steps including Damage-Suspected Element Identification step, Imminent Damaged Element Identification step, and finally, Damage Severity Detection step and does not need any optimizing algorithm. The first step focuses on the identification of damage-suspected elements using an index based on modal residual force vector. In the second step, imminent damage elements are identified among the damage-suspected elements detected in the previous step using a specific technique. Ultimately, in the third step, a novel relation is derived to calculate the damage severity of each imminent damaged element. To show the efficiency and quick function of the proposed method, three examples including a 25-bar planar truss, a 31-bar planar truss, and a 52-bar space truss are studied; results of which indicate that the method is innovatively capable of suitably detecting, for indeterminate trusses, not only damaged elements but also their individual damage severity by carrying out solely one analysis.
A two-step triplex PCR assay targeting the mecA, femA, and nuc genes was developed for the detection of methicillin resistance genes harbored by some Staphylococcus aureus isolates and for the simultaneous identification of such isolates at the species level. The triplex PCR revealed the presence of the femA and nuc genes in all the S. aureus isolates examined (n=105). Forty-four clinical isolates were mecA positive and no foodborne isolates were mecA positive. The PCR results had a 98 or 99% correlation with the results of PBP2a latex agglutination tests or oxacillin susceptibility tests, respectively.
Many researchers have developed various techniques for detection of human faces in ordinary still images. Face detection is the first imperative step of human face recognition systems. The two main problems of human face detection are how to cutoff the running time and how to reduce the number of false positives. In this paper, we present frontal and near-frontal face detection algorithm in still gray images using a thick edge image and neural network. We have devised a new filter that gets the thick edge image. Our overall scheme for face detection consists of two main phases. In the first phase we describe how to create the thick edge image using the filter and search for face candidates using a whole face detector. It is very helpful in removing plenty of windows with non-faces. The second phase verifies for detecting human faces using component-based eye detectors and the whole face detector. The experimental results show that our algorithm can reduce the running time and the number of false positives.
In this paper we present a face recognition and face detection algorithm in MPEG compressed video. The proposed method consists three stage of processing steps. The first step is to produce a spatially reduced DC image form MPEG compressed video for processing. And the second step is face detection on reduced DC image. Finally, the last step is face recognition on partially extracted compressed frames which contain the detected faces. The spatially reduced DC image is produced from two dimensional inverse DCT of the DC coefficient and the first two AC coefficients. The face detection is performed on DC image and face recognition is performed on one extracted frame per GOP by using the K-L transform. In order to evaluate the proposed method, we carried out experiments on video database. The experiment results show the proposed method is very efficient and helpful for target tasks.
Defect detection is one of the key factors in fabric quality control. To improve the speed and accuracy of denim fabric defect detection, this paper proposes a defect detection algorithm based on cascading feature extraction architecture. Firstly, this paper extracts these weight parameters of the pre-trained VGG16 model on the large dataset ImageNet and uses its portability to train the defect detection classifier and the defect recognition classifier respectively. Secondly, retraining and adjusting partial weight parameters of the convolution layer were retrained and adjusted from of these two training models on the high-definition fabric defect dataset. The last step is merging these two models to get the defect detection algorithm based on cascading architecture. Then there are two comparative experiments between this improved defect detection algorithm and other feature extraction methods, such as VGG16, ResNet-50, and Xception. The results of experiments show that the defect detection accuracy of this defect detection algorithm can reach 94.3% and the speed is also increased by 1-3 percentage points.

This paper presents a two-stage approach to detect pedestrians in video sequences taken from a moving vehicle. The first stage is a preprocessing step, in which potential pedestrians are hypothesized. During the preprocessing step, a difference image is constructed using a global motion estimation, vertical and horizontal edge maps are extracted, and the color difference between the road and pedestrians are determined to create candidate regions where pedestrians may be present. The candidate regions are refined further using the vertical edge symmetry features of the pedestrians' legs. In the next stage, each hypothesis is verified using the integral channel features and an AdaBoost classifier. In this stage, a decision is made as to whether or not each candidate region contains a pedestrian. The proposed algorithm was tested on a range of dataset images and showed good performance.

An automated system is needed for the effectiveness of non-destructive testing. In order to utilize the radiographic testing data accumulated in the film, the types of welding defects were classified into 9 and the shape of defects were analyzed. Data was preprocessed to use deep learning with high performance in image classification, and a combination of one-stage/two-stage method and convolutional neural networks/Transformer backbone was compared to confirm a model suitable for welding defect detection. The combination of two-stage, which can learn step-by-step, and deep-layered CNN backbone, showed the best performance with mean average precision 0.868.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for eye detection using two texture filters considering textural and structural characteristics of eye regions. The human eyes have two characteristics: 1) the eyes are horizontally long and 2) the pupas are of circular shapes. By considering these two characteristics of human eyes, two texture filters are utilized for the eye detection. One is Gabor filter for detecting eye shapes in horizontal direction. The other is ART descriptor for detecting pupils of circular shape. In order to effectively detect eye regions, the proposed method consists of four steps. The first step is to extract facial regions using AdaBoost method. The second step is to normalize the illumination by considering local information. The third step is to estimate candidate regions for eyes, by merging the results from two texture filters. The final step is to locate exact eye regions by using geometric information of the face. As experimental results, the performance of the proposed method has been improved by 2.9~4.4%, compared to the existing methods.
Automatic human face detection in a complex background is one of the difficult problems. In this paper, we propose an effective and robust automatic face detection approach that can locate the face region in natural scene images when the system is used as a pre-processor of a face recognition system . We use two natural and powerful visual cues, the skin color and the eyes. In the first step of the proposed system, the method based on the human skin color space by selecting flesh tone regions using normalized r-g space in color images. In the next step, we extract eye features by calculating moments and using geometrical face model. Experimental results demonstrate that the approach can efficiently detect human faces and satisfactory deal with the problems caused by bad lighting condition, skew face orientation.
In this paper, crack detection technique of concrete bridge is proposed robust against shadow and noise. Our technique consists of two steps. In the first step, crack candidate region is detected by preprocessing. Preprocessing techniques such as median filter, isolated point filter and morphological techniques, use utilized for detection of crack candidate regions. In the final step, crack is detected from crack candidate region by considering any connectivity between cracks. By experimental results, performance is improved 6.8% over the existing method.
