In this study, the validity of reducing the number of gas turbine stages designed for a nitrogen Brayton cycle coupled to a sodium-cooled fast reactor was assessed. The turbine performance was evaluated through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations under different off-design conditions controlled by a reduced flow rate and reduced rotational speed. Two different multistage gas turbines designed to extract almost the same specific work were selected: two- and three-stage turbines (mid-span stage loading coefficient: 1.23 and 1.0, respectively). Real gas properties were considered in the CFD simulation in accordance with the Peng-Robinson's equation of state. According to the CFD results, the off-design performance of the two-stage turbine is comparable to that of the three-stage turbine. Moreover, compared to the three-stage turbine, the two-stage turbine generates less entropy across the shock wave. The results indicate that under both design and off-design conditions, increasing the stage loading coefficient for a fewer number of turbine stages is effective in terms of performance and size. Furthermore, the Ellipse law can be used to assess off-design performance and increasing exponent of the expansion ratio term better predicts the off-design performance with a few stages (two or three).
In this paper, cycle performance analysis of $NH_3-CO_2$(R717-R744) two-stage cascade refrigeration system is presented to offer the basic design data for the operating parameters of the system. The operating parameters considered in this study include subcooling and superheating degree, compressor efficiency, and condensing and evaporating temperature in the ammonia(R717) high temperature cycle and the carbon dioxide low temperature cycle. The main results were summarized as follows : The COP of two-stage cascade refrigeration system increases with the increasing subcooling degree, but decreases with the increasing superheating degree. The COP of two-stage cascade refrigeration system decreases with the increasing condensing temperature, but increases with the increasing evaporating temperature. And the COP of two-stage cascade refrigeration system increases with increasing the compressor efficiency. Therefore, superheating and subcoolng degree, compressor efficiency, and evaporating and condensing temperature of $NH_3-CO_2$(R717-R744) two-stage cascade refrigeration system have an effect on the COP of this system.

Experimental results of two stage Gifford-McMahon cryorefrigerator are described. In-prototype experiments, drive mechanism is Scotch Yoke type driven by stepping motor, copper meshes and lead balls are used for regenerator's materials in the first stage and the second stage, respectively. To find optimal conditions of the cryopump, no load temperature and refrigeration capacity according to the variation of cycle frequency and operating pressure are measured, and the cool down and load characteristics at particular cycle frequencies are presented. In general, as the cycle frequency is lowered, no load temperature is dropped but refrigeration capacity is diminished. As the representative result, in a case that the cycle frequency is 70rpm and steady state pressure is 14 atm, no load temperature of second stage is lowered to 10.5K in 55 minuters, and in this situation the refrigeration capacity of the first stage is 42W at 80K, that of the second stage is 11 W at 20K.

A clock duty-cycle corrector (DCC) which is an essential device of clocking circuits for high-speed system-on-chip (SoC) design is introduced in this paper. The architectures and operation of conventional analog feedback DCCs and digital feedback DCCs are compared and analyzed. A new mixed-mode feedback DCC that combines the advantages of analog DCCs and digital DCCs to achieve a wider duty-cycle correction range, higher operating frequency, and higher duty-cycle correction accuracy is presented. Especially, the architectures and design of a mixed-mode duty-cycle amplifier (DCA) which is a core unit circuit of a mixed-mode DCC is presented in detail. Two mixed-mode DCCs based on a single-stage DCA and a two-stage DCA were designed in a 0.18-${\mu}m$ CMOS process, and it is proven that the two-stage DCA-based DCC has a wider duty-cycler correction range and smaller duty-cycle correction error.
Since the cooling performance of a $CO_2$ cooling cycle is varied significantly with a variation of refrigerant charge amount and outdoor temperature, the reliability of $CO_2$ system is down. In this study, the performance characteristics of three kinds of $CO_2$ systems were measured and analyzed by varying refrigerant charge amount and outdoor temperature so as to study the characteristics of variation with cycle option. The applied system options are the single-stage compression(1C-1E) system, two-stage compression with 1-EEV(2C-1E) system, and two-stage compression with 2-EEV(2C-2E) system. The performances of two-stage compression with 2-EEV system were less sensitive than those of other systems and the system operated safely and steadily for wide charge amount. The performance of the two-stage compression with 1-EEV(2C-1E) system was the most sensitive to the charge amount, and that of the single-stage compression(1C-1E) system varied a lot with outdoor temperature.

In this paper, cycle performance analysis of two-stage compression and two-stage expansion refrigeration system using alternative freon refrigerants is presented to offer the basic design data for the operating parameters of the system. Alternative freon refrigerant for freon refrigerant R22 were used as working fluids in this study. The operating parameters considered in this study included evaporation temperature, condensation temperature, subcooling degree, superheating degree, and mass flow rate ratio of inter-cooler. The main results were summarized as follows : The COP of two-stage compression and two-stage expansion refrigeration system increases with the increasing subcooling degree and mass flow rate ratio of inter-cooler, but decreases with the increasing evaporating temperature, condensing temperature and superheating degree. Therefore, subcooling degree, mass flow rate ratio of inter-cooler of two-stage compression and two-stage expansion refrigeration system using alternative freon refrigerants have an effect on COP of this system.
This bench-scale research investigated the aeration cycle(on/off) as the controlling factors for nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a 2-stage, intermittent aeration process. At this experiment, the aeration cycle time(air-on/air-off) was 30min/30min, 60min/60min, 90min/90min. Organic matter removal was observed more than 90% regardless of the aeration cycle and phosphorus removal was relatively high when the aeration cycle time was 60min/60min On the other hand. For all of the aeration cycle, TN removal was appeared less than 55%. This result was probably due to the limitation of the external substrate for heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification.

In this study, the improvement of cooling capacity by applying gas injection technique in a two-stage heat pump using R410A was experimentally investigated. A twin rotary type compressor with gas injection was applied to the heat pump system. The optimum refrigerant charge for the injection and the non-injection cycles was selected to achieve the maximum COP at the cooling standard condition. The injection cycle showed less optimum refrigerant charge than that of the non-injection cycle. The cooling performances of the injection and the non-injection cycles were measured and compared by varying compressor frequency from 40 to 90 Hz. The cooling capacity of the gas injection cycle was 1.6% -11.3% higher than that of the non-injection cycle. The COP of the gas injection cycle was 13.7% to 28.9% higher than that of the non-injection cycle at the same cooling capacity. The heat pump system showed stable operation after 30% of the injection valve opening.

The gonadal development and the gametogenic cycle and the fine structure of ripe germ cells of the cultured Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas were investigated using oysters monthly collected from the southern coast of Korea from October 2000 to September 2001. Monthly changes in the condition index were similar to that of meat weight rate and the highest value was observed in between April and May, and the lowest value in August. The external colors of the testis and the ovary were milky white and yellowish, respectively. The spawning period of the Pacific oyster was continued from May to September, with a peak in July. The gametogenic cycle could be classified into five successive stages: multiplicative stage (December to March), growing stage (March and April), mature stage (April to June), spawning stage (June to August) and resting stage (August to January). Variety of egg yolk granules, lipid granules, mitochondria, and endoplasmic reticula were observed in cytoplasm of ripe oocyte. The spermatozoon consisted of the head, middle piece and tail; including cap-shaped acrosome with domed structure, elliptical shaped nucleus, four mitochondria, two centrioles and flagellum.

Hybrid heat pumps, which combine the vapor compression and absorption heat pump cycle, can efficiently produce hot water of $80^{\circ}-90^{\circ}C$ from the low temperature of ${\sim}50^{\circ}C$. In this study, the performance of a two-stage hybrid heat pump (HHP) was compared with a single-stage hybrid heat pump using EES (Engineering Equation Solver). For the same operating conditions, the two-stage HHP showed a slightly higher COP (Coefficient Of Performance) and more stable operating conditions than the single-stage HHP. Moreover, the maximum working fluid temperature of the two-stage HHP was found to be lower than that of the single-stage HHP by about 40 K, which makes the working conditions of the lubricating oil safer. The COPs of both systems decreased with increasing UA-values. However, the heat output of the HHP was increased at the same time.
