  • We studied feasibility of three-dimensional optical memory by utilizing femtosecond laser-induced changes of transmission in photopolymers and photoluminescence in Eu and Sm ion doped sodium borate glasses. We produced transmission change by two photon absorption and obtained sub-Um size spots in photopolymers using 780 nm modelocked Ti-sapphire laser pulses. We also changed valence state of Eu and Sm ions by multi-photon absorption and achieved $\~{\mu}m$ sized spot formation in Sm-doped glasses.

  • The collective electronic oscillator (CEO) method was developed by Mukamel and collaborators.[Phys. Rev. Lett. 1992, 69, 65; Science 1997, 277, 781] Recently Ⅰ have extended the CEO method to obtain the frequency dependent optical properties with all the contributing components. The brief introduction of the CEO fomalism and its recent applications to linear absorption and two-photon absorption (TPA) of conjugated organic molecules will be discussed. The size scaling of optical properties of polyenes and polyynes have studied by ab initio calculations, and this result is consistent with the coherence length of the time dependent densities to first ($ρ^(1)$) and second order ($ρ^(2)$) in the electric field obtained from the CEO method.

  • Development of maskless lithography techniques can provide a potential solution for the photomask cost issue. Furthermore, it could open a market for small scale manufacturing applications. Since femtosecond lasers have been found suitable for processing of a wide range of materials with sub-micrometer resolution, it is attractive to use this technique for maskless lithography. As a femtosecond laser has recently been developed, both of high power and high photon density are easily obtained. The high photon density results in photopolymerization of photoresist whose absorption spectrum is shorter than that of the femtosecond laser. The maskless lithography using the two-photon absorption (TPA) makes micro structures. In this paper, we present a femtosecond laser direct write lithography for submicron PR patterning, which show great potential for future application.

  • Hydrogen atom production channels from photodissociation of benzene, phenylacetylene, and benzaldehyde at 243 nm have been investigated by detecting H atoms using two photon absorption at 243.2 nm and induced fluorescence at 121.6 nm. Translational energies of the H atoms were measured by Doppler broadened H atom spectra. By absorption of two photons at 243 nm, the H atoms are statistically produced from benzene and phenylacetylene whereas the H atoms from the aldehyde group in benzaldehyde are produced from different pathways. The possible dissociation mechanisms are discussed from the measured translational energy releases.

  • There has recently been a considerable amount of interest in two-photon(TP) processes because of their applications to 3-D optical data storage and imaging, up-conversion lasing, and optical power limiting. Recently, the role of Dithienothlophene(DTT) as $\pi$-center of two-photon absorption(TPA) molecules was reported to give a large enhancement of TPA, compared with the benzeniods counterparts.$^{[1]}$ In this report, we carried out two experiments to investigate nonlinear optical absorption of the molecules in which central DTT is attached through conjugation to either a D/D or a D/A pair at the ends, forming a D-$\pi$-D(1 and 3) or D-$\pi$-A(2 and 4) sequence(Fig.1). All the samples were prepared in solutions with the same molar concentration. (omitted)

  • The third order nonlinear optical susceptibilities, {{{{ chi }}(3), of the CuCl doped alumino-borosilicate glasses were measured by the two beam configuration DFWM method and the absorption saturation method, and the measured {{{{ chi }}(3) values were about 10-8 esu in both methods. The response time was estimated to be about 105ps from the time decay curve of the luminescence spectra obtained by time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) method.

  • Electroluminescent polymers have attracted considerable attention due to possible applications as large-area light-emitting displays. There have been many efforts to improve the electroluminescent efficiency. To design the polymer with high efficiency, it is necessary to understand the luminescent mechanism. In this report, we have investigated two-photon absorption(2PA) characteristics of highly efficient electroluminescent polymer using various techniques such as nonlinear transmission, 2PA-induced photoluminescence(2PA-PL) and 2PA-induced photoconductivity(2PA-PC).
