To investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of a two-dimensional buoyant surface jet, the most important factors of the numerical analysis are the evaluation of the free surface and the turbulence transportation under the stratification. In present study, a numeriacal simulation model used with the semi-implicit method for pressure-linked equations (SIMPLE), the non-hydrostatic approximation and the algebraic stress model (ASM) is applied to investigate the vertical structure of internal flow hydrodynamically. The ASM enables to take account of anisotropy of turbulence, the damping effects of the density interface, and the free surface on the turbulence structure accurately. The ASM tested produces better agreement than the $\kappa-\varepsilon$ model with measurements by Nakatsuji (1984) on the flow development and turbulence structure. Applicability of the ASM to a two-dimensional buoyant surface jet is examined through comparison with experimental data.

Two-dimensional finite element hydrodynamic models for long wave simulation usually adopt fixed land boundary. However moving boundary treatment is strongly required in the simulation of tidal flats for west and south coast of Korea. In this study very efficient and realistic moving boundary treatment is applied by considering incident long wave surface slope. Developed STEP-CM (Superior Two-step Explicit Program for Coastal Modeling) ,shows numerically stable results in comparative study for idealized one-dimensional channel. Real application of the model is done for Chonsu Bay where tidal flats are distributed along the coast. Nonlinear tidal current and tidal flat effects are easily simulated in STEP-CM and resulting circulations are detected around headland of Wonsan Island.

The uses of multi-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models are increasing to support a sustainable management of large dam reservoirs in Korea. Any modeling study requires selection of a proper spatial dimension of the model based on the characteristics of spatial variability of concerned simulation variables. For example, a laterally averaged two-dimensional (2D) model, which has been widely used in many large dam reservoirs in Korea, assumes that the lateral variations of hydrodynamic and water quality variables are negligible. However, there has been limited studies to give a justification of the assumption. The objectives of this study were to present the characteristics of spatial variations of water quality variables through intensive field monitoring in Daechung Reservoir, and provide information on a proper spatial dimension for different water quality parameters. The monitoring results showed that the lateral variations of water temperature are marginal, but those of DO, pH, and conductivity could be significant depending on the hydrological conditions and local algal biomass. In particular, the phytoplankton (Chl-a) and nutrient concentrations showed a significant lateral variation at R2 (Daejeongri) during low flow periods in 2008 possibly because of slow lateral mixing of tributary inflow from So-oak Stream and wind driven patchiness.

A two-dimensional Lagrangian finite-difference computer program is developed for the wave propagation analysis of impact phenomena. The numerical scheme is the standard method originally proposed by Von Neuman and Richtmyer, using artificial viscosity to smooth shock fronts. The material model used in the study is the standard hydrodynamic-elastic-plastic relations with Von-Mises yield criterion. A test configuration consisted of a target and a projectile were calculated to understand the response of a colliding event. However, the computer code is in plane strain, the calculations were intended for generating the qualitative features of the model behaviors. Nevertheless, the computational results were consistent with the experimental observations and provided a rational basis to interpret the modes of failures.
In semi-enclosed shallow sea areas typified by the Yellow sea and the East China Sea, currents and sea surface variations are predominantly tidal. During the recent years two-dimensional numerical hydrodynamic model of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea has been developed, based on the vertically-integrated equations of motion and continuity, capable of reproducing amplitudes and phases of the principal components of tides to satisfiable accuracy. As a subsequent development a three-dimensional hydrodynamical nymerical model covering the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea has been formulated to investigate the vertical distribution of horizontal tidal current and the response of the continented to investigate the vertical distribution of horizontal tidal current and the response of the continental shelf sea to steady uniform wind stress field imposed over the surface. Features of the M2 tidal current and the wind-induced three-dimensional current structure determined from the computation have been examined and discussed.
Reinforced concrete (RC) structures consist of two different materials: concrete and steel bar. The stress transfer behaviour between the two materials through bond plays an important role in the load-carrying capacity of RC structures, especially when they subject to lateral load such as blast and seismic load. Therefore, bond and slip between concrete and reinforcement bar will affect the response of RC structures under such loads. However, in most numerical analyses of blast-induced structural responses, the perfect bond between concrete and steel bar is often assumed. The main reason is that it is very difficult to model bond slip in the commercial finite element software, especially in hydrodynamic codes. In the present study, a one-dimensional slide line contact model in LS-DYNA for modeling sliding of rebar along a string of concrete nodes is creatively used to model the bond slip between concrete and steel bars in RC structures. In order to model the bond slip accurately, a new approach to define the parameters of the one-dimensional slide line model from common pullout test data is proposed. Reliability and accuracy of the proposed approach and the one-dimensional slide line in modelling the bond slip between concrete and steel bar are demonstrated through comparison of numerical results and experimental data. A case study is then carried out to investigate the bond slip effect on numerical analysis of blast-induced responses of a RC column. Parametric studies are also conducted to investigate the effect of bond shear modulus, maximum elastic slip strain, and damage curve exponential coefficient on blast-induced response of RC columns. Finally, recommendations are given for modelling the bond slip in numerical analysis of blast-induced responses of RC columns.

Usually in flood flow problems, one-dimensional approach does not provide the required details of complex flow phenomena such as the flow in braided rivers and river junction. In this study, two-dimensional finite element mesh is constructed using DEM and GIS tool, and applied to RMA-2model. The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of the two dimensional model in natural rivers and to analyze characteristics of river flow due to the change of cross section. For model calibration, the result of unsteady flow analysis was compared with the observed data. Accordingly, the SMS model in this study prove to be very effective and reliable tool for the simulation of hydrodynamic characteristics under the various flow conditions.

For analyses of multi-phase flows in a water-cooled nuclear power plant, a three-dimensional SIMPLE-algorithm based hydrodynamic solver CUPID-S has been developed. As governing equations, it adopts a two-fluid three-field model for the two-phase flows. The three fields represent a continuous liquid, a dispersed droplets, and a vapour field. The governing equations are discretized by a finite volume method on an unstructured grid to handle the geometrical complexity of the nuclear reactors. The phasic momentum equations are coupled and solved with a sparse block Gauss-Seidel matrix solver to increase a numerical stability. The pressure correction equation derived by summing the phasic volume fraction equations is applied on the unstructured mesh in the context of a cell-centered co-located scheme. This paper presents the numerical method and the preliminary results of the calculations.
