A compressible two-fluid two-phase flow computation model using the stiffened-gas equation of state is formulated. Since the conservation equation system is of mixed type, it gives complex eigenvalues. The sonic speeds obtained from the individual single phase have been simply used in the literature for the fastest wave speeds necessary in the HLL scheme. This method has worked fine but proved to be quite diffusive according to our test. To improve the accuracy, we here propose to utilize the analytic eigenvalues evaluated from an approximate Jacobian matrix lot the fastest wave speeds. The interfacial transfer terms were dropped in constituting the Jacobian matrix for this purpose. The present scheme proved efficient, robust and accurate in comparison with other existing methods. We solved the cavitating flow problem using the present scheme. The result shows more detailed wave structure in the cavitating process caused by the strong expansion waves.
Numerical methodology to solve ship springing problem, which is basically fluid-structure interaction problem, was explored in this study. Solution of this hydroelasticity problem was sought by coupling higher order B-spline Rankine panel method and finite element method in time domain, each of which is introduced for fluid and structure domain respectively. Even though varieties of different combinations in terms of numerical scheme are possible and have been tried by many researchers to solve the problem, no systematic study regarding the characteristics of each scheme has been done so far. Here, extensive case studies have been done on the numerical schemes especially focusing on the iteration method, FE analysis of beam-like structure, handling of forward speed problem and so on. Two different iteration scheme, Newton style one and fixed point iteration, were tried in this study and results were compared between the two. For the solution of the FE-based equation of motion, direct integration and modal superposition method were compared with each other from the viewpoint of its efficiency and accuracy. Finally, calculation of second derivative of basis potential, which is difficult to obtain with accuracy within grid-based method like BEM was discussed.
In this study, the behavior characteristics of a hydrostatic thrust bearing used in hydraulic equipment was analyzed using a commercial finite element program, ADINA. The solid domain was modeled with the fluid domain simultaneously to solve the fully coupled problem, because this is a problem where a fully coupled analysis is needed in order to model the fluid-structure interaction(FSI). The results such as bearing deformation, stress, film thickness and lifting bearing force were obtained through FSI analysis, and then they were compared with the results calculated from the classical method, a single step sequential analysis. It was found that the result difference between two analyses was increased according to the injection pressure. Therefore, in case of high pressure loading, it is desirable to conduct the FSI analysis to examine the deformation characteristics of a hydrostatic slipper bearing.
In order to investigate the vibration characteristics of fluid-structure interaction problem, we modeled two identical rectangular plates coupled with fluid. A commercial computer code, ANSYS was used to perform finite element analysis and FEM solutions were compared with the experimental results to verify the finite element model. As a result, comparison of FEM and experiment showed good agreement, and the transverse vibration modes, in-phase and out-of-Phase, were observed alternately in the fluid-coupled system. The effect of fluid gap size on the fluid-coupled natural frequency were investigated. It was shown that the mode numbers increased, the normalized natural frequencies monotonically increased. And it was also found that an increase of the fluid gap reduced the coupled natural frequencies for the in-phase modes but increased the coupled natural frequencies for the out-of phase modes, and eventually converged to the results of an infinite fluid gap.
This paper presents a method of seismic analysis for a cylindrical liquid storage structure on/in horizontally layered half.space considering the effects of the interior fluid and exterior soil medium in the frequency domain. To capture the essence of fluid-structure-soil interaction effects effectively, a mixed finite element with two-field (u, p) approximation is employed to model the compressive inviscid fluid, while the structure and soil medium are presented by the 3-D axisymmetric finite elements and dynamic infinite elements. The present FE-based method can be applied to the system with complex geometry of fluid region as well as with inhomogeneous near-field soil medium, since it can directly model both the fluid and the soil. For the purpose of verification, dominant peak frequencies in transfer functions for horizontal motions of cylindrical fluid storage tanks with rigid massless foundation on a homogeneous viscoelastic half.space are compared with those by two different added mass approaches for the fluid motion. The comparison indicates that the Present FE-based methodology gives accurate solution for the fluid-structure-soil interaction problem. Finally, as a demonstration of versatility of the present study, a seismic analysis for a real-scale LNG storage tank embedded in layered half.space is carried out, and its member forces along the height of the structure are compared with those by an added mass approach developed by the present writers.

By high speed Liquid Droplet Impingement (LDI) on material, fluid systems are seriously damaged, therefore, it is important for the solution of the erosion problem of fluid systems to consider the effect of material in LDI. In this study, by using an in-house fluid/material two-way coupled method which considers reflection and transmission of pressure, stress and velocity on the fluid/material interface, high-speed LDI on wet/dry material surface is simulated. As a result, in the case of LDI on wet surface, maximum equivalent stress are less than those of dry surface due to damping effect of liquid film. Empirical formula of the damping effect function is formulated with the fluid factors of LDI, which are impingement velocity, droplet diameter and thickness of liquid film on material surface.
Failure of tube bundles due to excessive flow-induced vibrations continues to affect the performance of nuclear power plant Early experimental studies concentrated on rigid structures and later investigators dealt with elastic structures because of their importance in many engineering fields. On the other hand, much less numerical work has been carried out, because of the numerical complexity associated with the problem. Conventional approaches usually decoupled the flow solution from the structural problem. The present numerical study proposes the methodology in analyzing the fluidelastic instability occurring in tube bundles by coupling the Computational fluid Dynamics (C%) with the tube equation of motions. The motion of the structures is modeled by a spring-damper-mass system that allows transnational motion in two directions (a two-degree-of-freedom system). The fluid motion and the cylinder response are solved in an iterative way, so that the interaction between the fluid and the structure can be accounted for property. The aim of the present work is to predict the fluidelstic instability of tube bundles and the associated phenomena, such as the response of the cylinder, the unsteady lift and drag on the cylinder, the vortex shedding frequency.
The effect of hydrodynamic damping on intake tower is twofold: one is fluid damping and another is structural damping. Fluid damping can be derived analytically from the governing equation of the fluid-structure-interaction (FSI) problem which yields a very complicated solution. To avoid the complexity of the FSI problem water-tower system can be simplified by considering water as added mass. However, in such a system a reconsideration of structural damping is required. This study investigates the effects of this damping on the dynamic response of the intake tower, where, apart from the "no water (NW)" condition, six other cases have been adopted depending on water height. Two different cross-sections of the tower are considered and also two different damping properties have been used for each case as well. Dynamic analysis has been carried out using horizontal ground motion as input. Finally, the result shows how hydrodynamic damping affects the dynamic behavior of an intake tower with the change of water height and cross-section. This research will help a designer to consider more conservative damping properties of intake tower which might vary depending on the shape of the tower and height of water.
Preconditioners for a two-dimensional combined finite element formulation have been devised and tested for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. The FSI code simulating the interaction of a elastic body with an unsteady flow is based on P2P1 finite element combined formulation. It has been shown that two preconditioners among them perform well with respect to computational memory and convergence for a bench-mark problem. Based on the verification of the preconditioners for the two-dimensional combined formulation, four preconditioners are proposed for the problem of an elastic body interacting with a flow.
In this paper, behavior of rectangular storage structures under earthquake loadings are investigated. Linear sloshing is assumed in this study. The effect of the wall flexibility is considered. Eulerian and lagrangian approaches are presented. The Eulerian approach is carried out by solving the boundary value problem for the fluid motion. In the lagrangian approach, the fluid as well as the storage structure is modelled by the finite element method. The fluid region is discretized by using fluid elements. The (1 $\times$ 1)-reduced integration is carried out for constructing the stiffness matrices of the fluid elements. Seismic analysis of the coupled system is carried out by the response spectra method. The numerical results show that the fluid forces on the wall obtained by two approaches are in good agreements. By including the effect of the wall flexibility, the forces due to fluid motion can be increased very significantly.
