Two coupling methods for the Navier-Stokes equations and a two-equation turbulence model equations are compared. They are the strongly coupled method and the loosely coupled method. The strongly coupled method solves the Navier-Stokes equations and the two-equation turbulence model equations simultaneously, while the loosely coupled method solves the Navier-Stokes equation with the turbulence viscosity fixed and subsequently solves the turbulence model equations with all the flow quantities fixed. In this paper, performances of two coupling methods are compared for two and three-dimensional problems.
The eddy viscosity turbulence models were applied to predict the flows through a cascade, and the prediction performances of turbulence models were assessed by comparing with the experimental results for a controlled diffusion(CD) compressor blade. The original $\kappa-\omega$ turbulence model and $\kappa-\omega$ shear stress transport(SST) turbulence model were used as two-equation turbulence model which were enhanced for a low Reynolds number flow and the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model was used as algebraic turbulence model. Farve averaged Wavier-Stokes equations in a two-dimensional, curvilinear coordinate system were solved by an implicit, cell-centered finite-volume computer code. The turbulence quantities are obtained by lagging when the men flow equations have been updated. The numerical analysis was made to the flows of CD compressor blade in a cascade at three different incidence angles (40. 43.4. 46 degrees). We found the reversion in the prediction performance of original $\kappa-\omega$ turbulence model and $\kappa-\omega$ SST turbulence model when the incidence angie increased. And the algebraic Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model showed inferiority to two-equation turbulence models.
In this study, we calculated arc discharges happened in high-voltage circuit breakers for understanding the complex physics and the probability of thermal breakdown. The four main parts of arc model for this virtual-reality are radiation, PTFE abaltion, Cu evaporation and turbulence. Among these important parts the turbulence model can be critical to the reliability of computation results during high-current period because the plasma flow is affected by high eat energy and mass momentum. Two kinds of turbulence model, zero-equation model and two-equation model, are applied for these calculations and are compared with the measured pressure data inside a chamber.
This paper presents a comparative study of a fully coupled, upwind, compressible Navier-Stokes code with three two-equation models and the Baldwin-Lomax algebraic model in predicting transonic/supersonic flow. The k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model of Abe performed well in predicting the pressure distributions and the velocity profiles near the flow separation over the axisymmetric bump, even though there were some discrepancies with the experimental data in the shear-stress distributions. Additionally, it is noted that this model has y$\^$*/ in damping functions instead of y$\^$+/. The turbulence model of Abe and Wilcox showed better agreements in skin friction coefficient distribution with the experimental data than the other models did for a supersonic compression ramp problem. Wilcox's model seems to be more reliable than the other models in terms of numerical stability. The two-equation models revealed that the redevelopment of the boundary layer was somewhat slow downstream of the reattachment portion.
An evaluation of one algebraic and two one-equation eddy viscosity-transport turbulence closure models as implemented to the CFDS(Characteristic Flux Difference Splitting) scheme is presented for the efficient computation of the turbulent flow. Comparisons of Baldwin-Lomax model as algebraic turbulence model and Baldwin-Barth and Spalart-Allmaras model as one-equation turbulence model are presented for three test cases for 3-dimensional flow. The numerical result of the CFDS schem is examined through comparison with the experimental data.
Aerodynamic sensitivity analysis is performed for the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with two-equation turbulence models using a discrete adjoint method and a direct differentiation method respectively. Like the mean flow equations, the turbulence model equations are also hand-differentiated to accurately calculate the sensitivity derivatives of flow quantities with respect to design variables in turbulent viscous flows. Both the direct differentiation code and the adjoint variable code adopt the same time integration scheme with the flow solver to efficiently solve the differentiated equations. The sensitivity codes are then compared with the flow solver in terms of solution accuracy, computing time and computer memory requirements. The sensitivity derivatives obtained from the sensitivity codes with different turbulence models are compared with each other. Using two-equation turbulence models, it is observed that a usual assumption of constant turbulent eddy viscosity in adjoint methods may lead to seriously inaccurate results in highly turbulent flows.
The present study is to compare the performance of turbulence models in the analysis of the complex flowfield of an axial flow compressor. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model and k-$\omega$ turbulence model were selected for the comparison. The thin-layer Wavier-Stokes equation was calculated by explicit, finite-difference numerical scheme. A spatially-varying time-step and an implicit residual smoothing were used to improve convergence. Experimental measurements for NASA rotor 37 were cited fer the comparison with numerical data. The compared two turbulence models gave similar performance over all except for total pressure.
The effect of roughness is a change in the velocity and turbulence distributions near the surface. Turbulence models with surface roughness effect are applied to the fully developed flow in a two-dimensional, rough wall channel. Modified wall function model, low-Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model, and k-$\omega$ model are selected for comparison. In order to make a fair comparison, the calculation results are compared with the experimental data. The modified wall function model and the low-Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model require further refinement, while the k-$\omega$ model of Wilcox performs remarkably well over a wide range of roughness values.
The performance of several turbulence models in computing an axisymmetric supersonic base flow is investigated. A compressible Navier-Stokes code, which incorporates k-ε, k-ω model and Reynolds stress closure with three kinds of pressure-strain correlation model, has been developed using implicit LU-SGS algorithm with second-order upwind TVD scheme. Numerical computations have been carried out for Herrin and Dutton's base flow. It is observed that the two-equation models give large backward axial velocity approaching to the base and somewhat larger variation of base pressure distribution than the Reynolds stress model. It is also found that the Reynolds stress model with third order pressure-strain model in the anisotropy tensor predicts most accurate mean flow field.

In this paper, the wakes behind a square cylinder were simulated using two kinds of different turbulence models for the eddy viscosity concept such as the zero- and the one-equation model in which the former is the mixing length model and the latter is the k-equation model. For comparison between numerical and analytical solutions, we employed three skill assessments: the correlation coefficient(r) for the similarity of the wake shape, the error of maximum velocity difference(EMVD) for the accuracy of wake velocity and the ratio of drag coefficient(RDC) for the pressure distribution around the structure. On the basis of the numerical results, the feasibility of each model for wake simulation was discussed and a suitable value for the empirical constant was suggested in these turbulence models. The zero-equation model, known as the simplest turbulence model, overestimated the EMVD and its absolute mean error(AME) for r, EMVD and RDC was ranging from 20.3 % to 56.3 % for all test. But the AME by the one-equation model was ranging from 3.4 % to 19.9 %. The predicted values of the one-equation model substantially agreed with the analytical solutions at the empirical mixing length scale $L=0.6b_{1/2}$ with the AME of 3.4 %. Therefore it was concluded that the one-equation model was suitable for the wake simulation behind a square cylinder when the empirical constant for eddy viscosity would be properly chosen.
