  • This paper describes an approach for the numerical analysis of container ship slamming and whipping and various parameters that influence slamming and whipping. For validation purposes, the numerical analysis results were compared with experimental results obtained as part of the Wave-Induced Loads on Ships Joint Industry Project. Water entry problems for two-dimensional (2D) sections were first solved using a 2D generalized Wagner model (GWM) for various drop conditions and geometries. As the next step, the hydroelastic numerical analysis of a 10,000-TEU container ship subjected to slamming and whipping loads in waves was performed. The analysis method used is based on a fully coupled model consisting of a three-dimensional (3D) Rankine panel model, a 3D finite element model (FEM), and a 2D GWM, which are strongly coupled in the time domain. Parametric studies were carried out in both numerical and experimental tests with various forward speeds, wave heights, and wave periods. The trends observed and the validity of the numerical analysis results are discussed.

  • The problem of determining the 3-demensional motion of any two rough bodies after a collision involves some rather long analysis and yet in some points it differs essentially from the corresponding problem in tdwo dimensions. We consider a special problem where two rough ellipsolids moving in any manner collide, and analyze the three dimensional impact process with Coulomb friction and Poisson's hypothesis. The differential equations that describe that process of the impact induce a flow in the tangent velocity space, the flow patterns characterize the possible impact cases. By using the graphic method in impulse space and numerical integration thchnique, we analyzed the impact process inall the possible cases and presented the algorithm for determining the post-impact motion. The principles could be applied to the general problem in three dimensions. We verified the effectiveness of the analysis results by simulating the numerous significant examples.

  • While the research for flow over a circular cylinder has been actively carried out up to the present, it has been known that the flow has not been clarified even now. Various complex flow and aero-acoustic characteristics exist around a circular cylinder such as flow separation, wake and pressure wave propagation. In this paper, research was carried out for wake flow and aeroacoustics over a circular cylinders by using high order, high resolution techniques that are used in two dimensional aero- acoustic analysis. OpenMP parallel processing method was used. For the numerical result, the periodic characteristic of Strouhal Number due to vortex shedding was comparatively analyzed with other experiment values and two dimensional numerical results.

  • This paper is the first one of two-parted research efforts focusing on the modeling of rubber pad forming process. The rubber pad, driven by the pressurized fluid during the forming process, pushes the sheet metal to solid tool half and forms a part to final shape. In this part of the paper, a numerical procedure for the FE analysis of the rubber pad deformation is presented. The developed three-dimensional FE model is based on the total Lagrangian description of rubber maerial characterized by nearly incompressible hyper-elastic behavior under a large deformation assumption. Validity of the model as well as effects of different algorithms corresponding to incompresibility constraints and time integration methods on numerical solution responses are also demonstrated.

  • Cooling characteristics using convection and conduction heat transfer in a parallel channel with extruding heat sources are studied numerically. A two-dimensional model has been developed for numerical prediction of transient, compressible, viscous, laminar flow, and conjugate heat transfer between parallel plates with uniform block heat sources. The finite volume method is used to solve this problem. The considered assembly consists of two channels formed by two covers and one PCB which has three uniform heat source blocks. Five different cooling methods are considered to find efficient cooling method in a given geometry and heat source. The velocity and temperature fields, local temperature distribution along surface of blocks, and the maximum temperature in each block are obtained.

  • In this paper, three-dimensional analysis of the curved levee was performed according to curvature angle, and radius of curvature to investigate the property of seepage. The hydraulic gradients in the curved parts of levees decreased in the outer levee and increased in the inner levee, compared to the two-dimensional analysis. The smaller the curvature angle and the radius of curvature, the larger the change of the hydraulic gradient, compared to the two-dimensional analysis. The effect of curvature radius on the hydraulic gradient was greater than the curvature angle. As a result of evaluating the piping safety factor for the critical hydraulic gradient, the safety factor was increased by 2~5% in the outer levee and decreased by 4~12% in the inner levee, compared to the two-dimensional analysis. Considering this reduction, if the two-dimensional analysis is performed on the curved part of the levee, and if designed the safety factor for piping is 0.1~0.3 greater than allowable FS=2.0, the safety factor of the curved part is slightly reduced, but there is no difficulty in securing stability.

  • Recently, the frequency of unexpecting heavy rains has been increased due to abnormal climate and extreme rainfall. There was a limit to analyze one dimension or two dimension stream flow of domestic rivers that was applied simple momentum equation and fixed energy conservation. Therefore, hydrodynamics flow analysis in rivers has been needed three dimensional numerical analysis for correct stream flow interpolation. In this study, CFD model on FLOW-3D was applied to stream flow analysis, which solves three dimension RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes Equation) control equation to find out physical behavior and the effect of hydraulic structures. Numerical simulation accomplished those results was compared by using turbulence models such as $k-{\backepsilon}$, RNG $k-{\backepsilon}$ and LES. Those numerical analysis results have been illustrated to bends and junctions by the turbulence energy effects, velocity of flow distributions, water level pressure distributions and eddy flows.

  • This paper deals with the performance analysis and design of impulse turbine for owe type wave energy plant. Numerical analysis is performed using a commercial software FLUENT. This parametric study includes the variation of several important parameters, such as the number and shape of blades, hub ratio, and tip clearance. Since parametric study at various flow coefficients requires a considerable amount of computing time, two-dimensional analysis is employed to find out optimum principal particulars. Full three-dimensional calculations are also performed for several test cases, in order to confirm the validity of the two-dimensional approach. Up to the present stage, tentative results are demonstrated the usefulness of 2-D analysis.

  • A numerical analysis based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations has been carried out for double-circular-arc (DCA) compressor cascades. Two types of double-circular-arc cascades were used in this analysis. The appropriate turbulence model for compressor analysis was selected among the conventional turbulence models such as Baldwin-Lomax, k-$\varepsilon$ and k-$\varepsilon$ models. The results of current study were compared with available experimental data at various incidence angles. The 2-D and 3-D computational codes based on SIMPLE/PWIM algorithm for collocated grid and hybrid scheme for the convective terms were the main features of numerical tools. As commonly known, turbulence modeling is very important for the prediction of cascade flows, which are extremely complex with separation and reattachment by adverse pressure gradient. For selection of turbulence model, 2-D analysis was performed. And then, k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with wall function chosen as the reasonable turbulence model for 3-D calculation was used to increase the efficiency of computation times. A reasonable result of 3-D flow pattern passing through the double-circular-arc cascade was obtained.
