  • The effect of Tween 20 addition on changes in the stability of methylcellulose (MC) emulsions (1 wt% MC, 10 wt% n-tetradecane, 20 mM bis-tris buffer, pH 7) was investigated by creaming stability and orthokinetic stability measurements. In the case of MC emulsions containing varying amounts of oil (1$\sim$30 wt%) and no Tween 20 added, creaming stability, judged by mean migration velocity of fat globules ($V_m$), was found to depend on droplet size: the larger the droplet size, the worse the stability [$V_m$: 0.326 $\mu$m $min^{-1}$ ($d_{32}$: 0.32 $\mu$m) ${\rightarrow}V_m$: 0.551 $\mu$m $min^{-1}$ ($d_{32}$: 0.53 $\mu$m)]. With Tween 20, creaming stability was found to be worse than the one without Tween 20, except for MC emulsion containing 0.2 wt% Tween 20. In addition, cream stability was the lowest with the lowest concentration of Tween 20 and a tendency to recover with increasing Tween 20 concentration [$V_m$: 0.598 $\mu$m $min^{-1}$ (0.01 wt%)${\rightarrow}V_m$: 0.389 $\mu$m $min^{-1}$ (0.2 wt%)] was found. From viscosity measurement for aqueous bulk phase of MC emulsions, such a change in the creaming stability was found to coincide well with the results of viscosity measurement. Therefore, it was reasonable to say that creaming stability of MC emulsions containing Tween 20 depended on MC concentration in aqueous bulk phase, which was in turn varied by competitive adsorption between MC and Tween 20 at the oil droplet surface. In case of orthokinetic stability, judged by destabilization time ($t_d$), it was found that the addition of Tween 20 resulted in lowered stability with more pronounce tendency at higher concentrations [$t_d$: 160 min (0.03 wt%)${\rightarrow}t_d$: 100 min (0.2 wt%)]. Moreover, combined with previous results, the orthokinetic stability of MC emulsions containing Tween 20 was found to be exponentially proportional to MC load. In conclusion, competitive adsorption between MC and Tween 20 may affect the stability properties of MC emulsion to varying extents, depending on the concentration of Tween 20.

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and counter-ion binding constant (B) of the pure cationic surfactants (DTAB, TTAB, CTAB), nonionic surfactants (Tween-20, Tween-40, Tween-80), and their mixed surfactants (TTAB/Tween-20, TTAB/Tween-40, TTAB/Tween-80) in aqueous solutions of 4-chlorobenzoic acid were determined by using the UV/Vis absorbance method and the conductivity method from 284 K to 312 K. Thermodynamic parameters (${\Delta}G^o{_m}$, ${\Delta}H^o{_m}$, and ${\Delta}S^o{_m}$), associated with the micelle formation of those surfactant systems, have been estimated from the dependence of CMC and B values on the temperature and carbon length of surfactant molecules. The calculated values of ${\Delta}G^o{_m}$ are all negative within the measured range but the values of ${\Delta}H^o{_m}$ and ${\Delta}S^o{_m}$ are positive or negative, depending on the length of the carbon chain and surfactant.

  • Curcumin is a flavonoid found in the rhizome of the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa L.) and has recently attracted interest because it has numerous biological functions and therapeutic properties. In the present study, we attempted to incorporate curcumin into medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) nanoemulsions (0.15 wt% curcumin, 10 wt% MCT oil, and 10 wt% emulsifiers) with various emulsifiers [polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate (Tween-20), sorbitan monooleate (SM), and soy lecithin (SL)]. The physicochemical properties of the nanoemulsions including the Ostwald ripening stability were investigated. The initial droplet size was found to be 89.08 nm for the nanoemulsion with 10 wt% Tween-20 (control), and when Tween-20 was partially replaced with SM and SL, the size decreased: 73.43 nm with 4 wt% SM+6 wt% Tween-20 and 67.68 nm with 4 wt% SL+6 wt% Tween-20 (prepared at 15,000 psi). When the nanoemulsions were stored for 28 days at room temperature, the droplet size increased as the storage time increased. The largest increase was observed for the control nanoemulsion, followed by the 4 wt% SL+6 wt% Tween-20 and 4 wt% SM+6 wt% Tween-20 systems. The Turbiscan dispersion stability results strongly supported the relationship between droplet size and storage time. The time-dependent increase in droplet size was attributed to the Ostwald ripening phenomenon. Thus, the Ostwald ripening stability of curcumin-loaded MCT nanoemulsions with Tween-20 was considerably improved by partially replacing the Tween-20 with SM or SL. In addition, curcumin may have acted as an Ostwald ripening inhibitor.

  • The effects of changing aqueous solution properties by nonionic surfactants on wetting behavior and water retention properies of hydrophobic PET (polyethylene terephthalate) fabric were reported. The aqueous solution properties were diversified by mixing and diluting two nonionic surfactants, i.e., sorbitan monolaurate (Span 20) and polyoxyethylene(20) sorbitan monolaurate (Tween 20). The surface wetting properties ($cos{\theta}$) of PET fabric were greatly improved by adding $10^{-1}g/dl$ Tween 20 and further improved by mixing Span 20 to the system. The water retention properties (W) of PET fabric were also greatly increased by addition of $10^{-1}g/dl$ Tween 20. In diluted surfactant systems, the $cos{\theta}'s$ were increased with decreasing surface tension of aqueous liquids. The ratios of aqueous liquid retained in the pore structure to liquid retention capacity (W/H) were also increased with decreasing surface tension, however, W/H values were dramatically increased right after critical micelle concentration (cmc). The existence of micelles was important for the retention of aqueous liquids in the fabric. The critical surface tension of PET fabric used was found to be 28.7dyne/cm.

  • Phanerochaete chrysosporium is a white rot fungus which secrets a family of lignin-degrading enzymes under nutrient limitation. Ligninase was extracellularly produced in agitated submerged cultures of P. chrysosporium, SC 26. Addition of veratryl alcohol(4 mM), and benzyl alcohol(10 mM) with 0.1% Tween 20 to the culture medium stimulated ligninase production. However, ligninase was not detected when both treatments of veratryl alcohol and benzyl alcohol without Tween 20 were added to the medium. Addition of 0.1 % Tween 20 to the culture medium had little effect on ligninase activity. The ligninase activity was maximum on day 5-8 for veratryl alcohol, and benzyl alcohol with 0.1 % Tween 20 additive medium.

  • The effect of Tween 20 on the penetration of ketoprofen in aqueous vehicles through excised rat skin has been evaluated. The addition of Tween 20, up to 2%, in water containing ketoprofen decreased the penetration of ketoprofen through the skin compared with the reference vehicle without this surfactant. However, the addition of Tween 20 in ketoprofen aqueous vehicle increased diffusion parameter significantly which was compensated with the lowered partition parameter.

  • Batch experiments were performed to investigate the feasibility of a surfactant-enhanced soil washing process for soils heavily contaminated with crude oil in Kuwait. TPH concentration of the contaminated soil was 223,754 mg/kg, sampled from the bottom of a vaporized oil extraction pond in the Burgan reservoir field. Commercialized eight nonionic surfactants (Tween and Tergitol series) were used to measure the aqueous solubility for the crude oil. Among them, two Tergitol surfactants were used to evaluate the TPH removal efficiency of the surfactant-enhanced soil washing for heavily contaminated Kuwait soil. The solubility of the crude oil in surfactant solution was in the order Tergitol 15-S-7 > Tergitol 15-S-9 > Tergitol 15-S-12 > Tween-80 > Tween-20 > Tween-60, which showed that the crude oil solubilities of the Tergitol series were higher than those of the Tween series. The TPH removal efficiencies of 2% and 5% Tergitol 15-S-9 solution were 59% and 65%, respectively. Because the residual TPH concentration in the washed soil was still higher than the clean-up level (10,000 mg/kg), the soil washing process was repeated five times. After the fifth washing, the residual TPH concentration in the soil went down to 7,680 mg/kg and its removal efficiency was 97%.

  • C6-Benzylamino purine (BAP) 400 ppm with 500 ppm Spreader, 500 ppm Cover, 250 ppm Spreadersticker, 350 ppm Siloxane, or 1% Tween 20 was sprayed and the effect of surface-active agents on the feathering of maiden apple trees was evaluated. Only Tween 20 showed additional effect on the feathering in comparison with the single BAP treatment. In the second year different concentrations of Tween 20 were added to 400 ppm BAP. Each BAP treatment added with 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, or 1.0% Tween 20 was more effective in feathering than BAP 400ppm alone, but no significant differences among the concentrations.

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the zwitterionic surfactant of dodecyldimethyl(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide(LSB, $CH_3(CH_2)_{11}N^+(CH_3)_2(CH_2)_3SO{_3}^-$) and LSB/Tween-20, LSB/Tween-40, LSB/Tween-80 and LSB/DTAB, LSB/TTAB, LSB/CTAB mixed surfactant systems were determined by using the UV/Vis absorbance method from 284 K to 312 K. And the effects of temperature on the micellization have been measured for the thermodynamic study. The results show that the measured values of gibbs free energy are all negative in the whole measured. The values of enthalpy are positive Tween-20, And negative other surfactants. but the values of entropy are positive in the whole measured temperature region. The results show that all of the thermodynamic parameters are dependent on temperature and alkyl-group's length.

  • For transdermal delivery of porcine placenta extract (PPE), various emulsion formulations were prepared and evaluated. Polysorbate surfactants were used as emulsifiers and various C-18 unsaturated fatty acids as enhancers. The skin permeation of PPE was tested using a cellulose nitrate membrane-loaded Franz cell apparatus. Among emulsifiers, Tween 20 provided higher penetration effect than did Tween 80. Meanwhile, of various fatty acids, linolenic acid (18:3) revealed the highest skin permeation of PPE than the other C-18 unsaturated fatty acids. Stability of PPE emulsions was determined by cycles of freezing and thawing processes. The stability of emulsions depended on the percentage of Tween 20. Minimum 20% of Tween 20 was required to stabilize emulsions at room temperature for several days. Taken together, our results suggest that Tween 20 and linolenic acids might be key components to formulate PPE emulsion to provide the desirable skin permeability and stability.
