  • This study investigates the effect of peer tutoring and peer tutor training program on Korean university students' EFL writing. Six tutors and twelve tutees have participated in the experiment. The tutors were divided into untrained and trained groups each of which was assigned to teach six tutees. The three peer tutors in the experimental group received training on how to give peer tutoring. After the pre-test, the tutees wrote series of drafts on three topics and received written feedback from their peer tutors via email. The results of the post-test showed improvement in writing scores in both groups. The tutees in the trained peer tutor group, however, showed much greater improvement. Their improvement was also more consistent, and the score differences between the two groups increased over time. Analysis of the peer tutors' written feedback indicated that the trained tutors focused more on the higher order concerns in writing than the untrained ones did. In the questionnaire all tutees responded positively to the peer tutoring experience. The results indicate that peer tutor training programs may have beneficial effects on Korean university students' writing abilities especially in the elements of higher order concerns.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of private tutor's job stress on the organizational commitment and turn-over intention and to verify the mediating effect of the organizational commitment. The questionnaire survey was peformed for 332 private tutors in special education region in Seoul. The collected data were used as a model of path coefficients obtained through analysis of structure equation model(SEM) and hypothesis verification. The result of the verification is as follows. First, both stress by student and stress by administrative support showed statistically significant negative effects on the organizational commitment. Second, the private tutor's organizational commitment showed a statistically significant negative effects on the turn-over intention. Third, both stress by task and stress by conflict in organization showed statistically significant positive effects on the turn-over intention. Fourth, even if both stress by student and stress by administrative support showed statistically no significant effects on the turn-over intention, they showed statistically significant effects on the turn-over intention with the mediating effect of the organizational commitment. It was confirmed that the turn-over intention can be decreased by relief of the private tutor's job stress and enhancement of the organizational commitment. In this process, it is meaningful to verify the role and function of the private tutor's organizational commitment.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and implement the Appropriate Technology Science School program (ATSS) for youth operated by the Europe-Korea Conference on Science & Technology (EKC) since 2016. The development process consisted of pre-online management meetings, online and offline tutor training, operation of ATSS for youth, and satisfaction surveys. As a result of the development, the management team selected the mission-solving theme of "Transforming village using blockchain technology" through a pre-online meeting. The contents were reorganized according to the level of the participating tutees, and various learning activities such as co-building activities, games, and plays were newly introduced and developed first, and the programs developed through tutor training were demonstrated and improved. A total of 38 tutees and tutors from 6 countries participated in the 2018 ATSS. As a result, participants showed positive satisfaction overall. Tutees showed interest in dome co-building activities and hash function calculation activities, and tutors showed interest in lectures and monopoly games related to blockchain technology. The development and of the 2018 ATSS will contribute to the improvement of expertise in the operation of the EKC ATSS in the future to the management team. It will be an opportunity for tutors to experience that high-tech science and technology have a good impact on appropriate technology for the third world and community society. In addition, Tutees will be provided with an opportunity to indirectly experience the local situation and community society through a role play on the impact of blockchain technology on African villages.

  • This study carried out an experimental English pronunciation assessment to see the differences in the relationship between the different rater categories. The result shows that i) correlation between Korean and Native American raters is high(r=.98) enough to be considered reliable, ii) previous instructions about assessment rubric and the knowledge about English phonetics and phonology exert little influence on the rating scores, iii) correlation between the automatic ILT(Interactive Language Tutor) rating using speech recognition technology and Natives' rating is stronger than that between ILT and Koreans' rating.
